For forty uninterrupted years, Robert Moses exploited those in office through a mix of charm and intimidation. Motivated at first by a determination to improve the lives of New York City’s workers, he created parks, bridges and 627 miles of expressway to connect the people to the great outdoors.
Faced with resistance by protest groups campaigning for a very different idea of what the city should become, will the weakness of democracy be exposed in the face of his charismatic conviction?
Broadcast live from the Bridge Theatre in London, Nicholas Hytner directs this exhilarating new play.

Ralph is such a chameleon of an actor 🙌🙌
He's the best! And Straight Line Crazy is no exception
@@NationalTheatre hello. can you explain why your national theatre at home links aren't working? it takes us to a 404 page. I emailed, I've tweeted and I'm getting no response from you guys. It's been this way for months.
@@bluebellbeatnik4945 A few shows are restricted from certain regions due to rights restrictions - Straight Line Crazy, for example, is not available in the USA. This may be what you're encountering. Otherwise, please do contact the National Theatre at Home help desk: ntathome.com/contact
Extraordinary performance 🙏❤🥰😘
I love the wrap-around set….
That's the excellent work of designer Bob Crowley
Excellent performance last night by Ralph Fiennes in a very interesting new play at Bridge Theatre London. A great strong supporting cast!
And the Oscar goes to... Danny Webb! Absolutely brilliant - and a very loveable characterisation.
An incredible performance and I am so grateful I got to see it live
Excelente!
Where can I download this play
They could have used some work on their American sound. Accents are in and out. I’m available next time. 🎉
but can you act?
I agree Moses spoke more like FDR and Al Smith had that Toity Toid and Toid sound.
Show the entire play.
lol go and see it since it's theatre....
why is this shot kinda like a movie if they're acting is theatrical, not cinematic?
Saw this a couple of weeks ago. Fiennes is a great actor but totally miscast in this, Danny Webb steals the show hands down. The script is a bit vanilla but staging is good, all in all a fun evening. Bridge Theatre auditorium is stunning.
i hate the entrance to the bridge theatre - too exposing but the theatre itself is fantastic. why do you think fiennes is miscast? the acting from both is very 'big'.
@@butterflymoon6368 Yes agreed on the entrance, not the biggest fan either… but too sleek and impersonal.
I thought Fiennes miscast because accents not his forte and this is is such a quintessentially American role. Also because Moses such a huge personality the story is almost myth-like, so the role and the play are better suited IMO to character actors, which Fiennes isn’t really (apart from recent exceptions eg. Grand Budapest Hotel)… It’s really obvious when Webb walks in, because it suddenly feels like they’re not in the same play.
And yet (and this is testament to how great Fiennes is): still a masterclass to watch him!
😀🙏❤🥰😘
Salute Martin Luther?
I like Ralph but his American accent for this role isn’t as convincing as it could be.
I remember his American accent in Strange Days being pretty good.
@@gestalt3s Unfortunately in this case his American accent isn’t as good.
@@Gojoseon better than the other guy's
It’s an excellent mid-Atlantic accent that most Americans of Moses’s era and upbringing had.
I love John Henry Newman a winner.
Oh, Dirk Gently's in this
We love Samuel Barnett!
We love God. We want God.
Liam Neeson would make a better Moses. The man was a big imposing character.
no too tall
@@bluebellbeatnik4945 the real Robert Moses was over 6 feet tall.
Unlike Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson is not a theatre actor. He only did 4 plays, wasn’t really good at it.
Why did Fiennes get the job when he cannot do an American accent?
because he's a great actor
@@bluebellbeatnik4945 He is a great actor, so is Jeremy Irons and so was Olivier, but all could not do an American accent
Also audience is not masked. 😮
Because they’ve finally woken up! Sadly you’re still one of the sheep 😔
Don't tell Patty Lupone.
Good for them! Always should have been a personal choice as masks are useless and just symbols of compliance for so-called 'liberals'. I'm happily maskless and have been throughout, but so tired of the harassment from these masked zombies over the past two years! Never ceases to amaze me how the convid cultists profess how terrified they are of getting sick, but then go to crowded places like theaters, nail salons or airplanes! Surely if they were REALLY scared they would stay home and only go out to purchase food once a week? Please, so-called 'liberal' mask enforcers, decide if you are scared or not scared, whether tis nobler in the mind to venture forth and risk breathing fresh air or to take refuge under the bed with twenty masks affixed for the rest of your lives? Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished.
nobody was masked when i went too. are you american? almost nobody is masked in the UK any more. I still wear mine though.
This is pretty mid. Great set, but Ralph Fiennes should not be in this play
