So true! Blue with gold wheels is absolutely the way to go!! Still, I did like this example. Looked like a lot of fun to drive!
RA STANDS FOR RACE ALTERED .
THIS RA model was used as the base for group N rally cars so it's very basic and light.it has a closed deck block and can handle allot of power .THIS CAR predates STI Subaru Technica International .so no centre diff or STI branding .
The RA handles amazing I would say it's on par with my evo .its top speed is very low at around 135 mph to 140 because of the close ratio 5 speed.
but it's 0 to 60 is fast around 4.9.The weight was 1180KG which is very light for a car with AC.
You idiot if it’s a proper early RA it’s got a handbuilt STI motor , go back to school and stop chatting shit on the internet
RA means different things for different Imprezas
For the Blobeye/Hawkeye Spec C Type RA it means "Record Attempt"
@@miawallace2785 numb nuts!! I'd go back to school the 1st WRX RA came out in 1992 the WRX STI came-out in 1994!!!
the RA had NO air-con "sorry RSA DYNAMICS this was deleted", electric windows, ABS, not even a horn
however it did have a centre diff it was a viscous coupling type "sorry RSA DYNAMICS wrong their" this was then mated to another viscous type LSD...
also the RA as mentioned above had NO STI badging, specifications again the RA predates the STI model so why the hell would it hold any STI badging. The RA was a RACE spec car for race teams & tuners only to special order
@@tracktimevideos5164 that's brilliant info!! however I'm pretty sure we're aiming towards the original RA model as shown in the video, later models are really irrelevant...
Rally altered
That intro of the car going over dirt onto the road is so perfect.
I am a huge Impreza fan and have been lucky enough to own a few. The Type RA is fantastic, but those stickers make every single owner look like a massive bellend. Take them off, and your car is a real weapon 👍
Vinny C have to agree. Even if the car is WR Blue with gold wheels, the stickers just do not belong on the road cars. Not exactly subtle or tasteful.
I mostly agree, if the car is closer to standard road spec then yeah stickers are overkill, but if it's specced for actual rallying or racing then why not, bit of fun, whack some stickers on it, big exhaust, flat out loud cheeky fun times :)
Vinny C A guy round here has a blue one, gold wheels and plastered in horrible tacky looking 555 livery
He's knocking on a bit and looks a right tw@t 😂
These are fantastic light weight performance cars ! I currently have a 1993 WRX with Z4 ecu. They are affordable and genuinely fast even by modern standards. Buy these while you can because nothing like them will ever be made again ! So happy I picked my 1993 wrx so cheap last year
I had an RA years ago, it had been fettled somewhat by engine tuner in Plymouth, It was very quick and so much fun, completely antisocial and I still miss it!! Too raw for many and the close ratio box was not great for longer journeys, but it’s a great weekend car. Keep the brilliant content coming 👍
Thanks for bringing back a very fond memory here.
Back in 2002/2003 my boss allowed me the privilege of driving his motor.
That was a 1996 imported WRXsti - the closest specification road legal model to the one featured here (if memory serves that is). It looked "stock" but had a few modifications;
Lightweight flywheel, twin plate racing clutch and the Tubrbo boost had this churning out 350+bhp with torque well across the rev range.
He kept an eye on all of the gauges whilst I was given the opportunity to fill my boots, so to speak.
An unforgettable experience there! Sadly it later became wrapped round a lamppost by a subsequent owner and consigned to the scrapyard 😢.
Good content Jay and thanks 👍.
Closing in on that 100k mark. As a long time. Subscriber it's great to see this channel growing
My favourite car ch on CZcams, keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Very happy to see you steaming up to the soon 100K sub mark! well deserved!
Owned an STI Type RA v2. Loved it. Something weirdly cool about the little roof vent 😁
Love seeing a Mk1 impreza RA is reviewed and keep up the great content and great videos and stay safe
Thanks Will!
Man those first gens look so sweet.Dimensions are just so perfect.
So weird to think the gen that followed it was so weird looking.
Absolutely adored the 1998 wagon STi I had in the early 2000's. Slightly breathed on it went like a rocket-ship and stuck to the road like Shit to a blanket and for me at least, was extremely reliable. Fantastic cars !!
Yup
I had 2 imprezza
And 3 evo
2 , 4 6
God I missed them 1😫
how old are you now?

Offered befor totally stock jdm bugeye sti 280bhp pink badge here if you want to drive as it is still stock ..

These 1990’s Subaru Imprezas and Honda Integras are genuine dream cars of mine. Few things compare, the Mitsubishi Lancers, Honda Preludes, and Toyota Celicas were nice; however, somehow or another, only the Subaru Impreza and Honda Integra truly latched onto my heart.
This is much more my dream car than any Lamborghini could ever be
Ross Are you a realist by chance?😅
@@MyMostBeautifuCinema lamborghini's are dream cars for the new generation. I'm 17 but one of my dream cars is a Subaru Impreza WRX STI 2001-2002 Prodrive
Ross same , mine is the evolution
Asif Noaman im 19 snd one of my dream cars is actually a wrx blob eye idk what it is about it but I really like the way they look/sound.
Nice video. I’ve watched a heap of your videos whist in lock down. Thanks for helping the time pass by! I own a 2016 STI here in Australia. By the time I was able to afford a second car as a weekend toy a few years back the one I wanted, a blue 2 door version 5 STI, had become way over priced in my view. Even for rough, high mileage 200,000 km plus examples. So I went the modern STI route for around half the money. I need the reliability with a couple of kids who come for drives with me and don’t have the time or garage space to tinker with an older car these days. My 2016 STI still has the old school feel and character in many ways, without the age of the older cars which works well for me.
Thanks for watching Philip!
Colin Mac ray😂 love it. Super video thanks
Glad to hear u have a slight liking for the hatch. I have the sti spec c hatch and it really is a great car , power good , comfort good, ride good load carrying abilities. Think it will take couple more years b4 people figure out it is better than what they think.
Spec c hatch in yellow.....😍😈👍
Had a wrx sti, classic shape, like this with private plate 15 yrs ago then bought the eagle eye as well with pro drive performance pack , great cars crap on fuel cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
Thanks for that James. I have a 2009 Legacy 3.0R Spec B which has the WRX front suspension lifted off the Impreza and plonked on the Legacy (I'm sure they did some engineering) except with softer bushes because the Spec B was the flagship Subaru and was meant to ride a bit better - the suspension is still harsh but I don't care because, at speed, it's just magnificent. In these days of ridiculous hp figures I find the 240 hp I get from the 3.0R quite adequate for having real fun on real roads - when the VVT kicks in at 4k rpm-ish the engine just sounds wonderful and AWD helps of course. If you're considering a WRX take a look at a Spec B (there aren't that many around - if you can find a late one snap it up). Five seater with good legroom in the back, decent boot, build quality (which the Impreza didn't have) all the toys (for 2009) and it goes like stink. But hey, what do I know. Mike
Reliant Scimitars probably my affordable dream car still very cheap and I think a great classic that you can use daily.
Princess anne had one of those don't you know? 😁👍
My Grandad had one of those, however, no one was willing to pay more than £2k for it (fully functioning, had passed MOT few years prior but wasn't a regular driver), so it went under the scrappage scheme in exchange for a Hyundai i10.
@@aljowen that's a real shame
@@js00065 the law of the land!
which genre? gte/gtc, or ss1/sabre?
I had a type ra in red owned it for 4 years loved it sold it for a v4 sti which I owned for 10 years
Love the Impreza, P1 or 22b in McRae spec. It’s in my top 10 fantasy garage.
Growing up in the early 90s me and my mate was obsessed by the Peugeot 405 MI-16. Not sure if it's a dream car as such but we were absolutely dazzled and in awe of the "MI-16" badge, even though we had no idea what it meant 👌
Paul Allwood I’ve owned one. Great chassis. Not so great engine.
I had a early mi16 pre cat engine rev so high and better than my friends catted one wish I had never sold it 😎
Another great vid. Thanks.
You're very welcome!
Great review.
The car I lusted after since 1994!
Still havent driven one yet!
Would love a loud scoody one day! Great video ,👍
That final shot 🤤
Its seems almost every time when ive got my eye on a certain car Jay has a video released on it not long after which I appreciate, the Merc e55 amg and the 190 were the same, Buckys GC8 build is my favourite style atm.
If you wouldn't mind having your eye on a Carrera GT, or a McLaren P1, or a LaFerrari, that'd be great
@@JayEmmOnCars haha well Im convincing myself that step by step im moving my way up the ladder so soon I'm sure :), Thats gonna be a tastey video.
Carrera GT sounds like the pick of the bunch and im curious to see if its as a handful as its portrayed to be. I'll be looking forward to that video.
@@JayEmmOnCars hahaha fingers crossed
I very nearly bought acred "RA" a few years ago. I was told it stood for "Race Altered"
The RA I believe initially stood for ‘Record Attempt’, from the Subaru Legacy attempting (and beating) the 100,000km FIA World Land Endurance record in 1989. Subaru produced a Legacy RS Type RA to commemorate this, with RA becoming a nameplate for the stripped out, lightened, and more capable WRXs and STIs up until the early 2000s, when the title was replaced by ‘Spec C’. It’s likely that in these later years, RA was meant to simple mean ‘rally’.
Wow that is a great Subaru. I'm partial to the bug-eyed Impreza WRX ahd now I have a 2nd favorite Impreza WRX.
I think I'm going to start saving up for one, preferably with RHD and indicators on the right hand side as my second fun car! I honestly thought they ALL were crazy expensive.
Imprezza is my dream car
Need to own this car one day ✨
Nice content
If it's possible once the lockdown relaxes it would be great to see you drive the Zenos they have.
Cool car that
@@JayEmmOnCars I thought they looked great, a slightly more grown up Caterham. It's a real shame as it sounded like it was short term cashflow that sunk them rather than disinterest. Now I think the best new British sports car is the Jannarelly Design 1 from Dubai! Gorgeous things.
The front looks so much better than later models.
Awesome car , 240 up but 2600lb , feels like 500 up ! I'm in Canada and these cars are numerous !
Love the classic shape, I've had my RB5 8 years now, use it every day, plus show it at classic cars shows, I absolutely love it, if I could afford them, would love a short wheelbase Audi Quattro of a Subaru impreza 22B.
Nice. Had my V6 sti for 7 years and it’s got a more classic feel to ownership now
I had friend that traded in his virtually new RB5 when the P1 came out! Beautiful cars havent seen one since
Sold my RB5 around 4 years ago for twice what I paid for it 7 years earlier. Was a fantastic car, I have a vid of driving it at Silverstone. Now into a hawkeye Spec C RA, feels similar but faster.
Can you do a Rover P6 video?? Half video of Rover P6 with Brit motor and half video of Rover P6 with Buick motor?? It's my dream car when i will get my first job!!
I'm so jealous of Great Brittain for having so many affordable awesome cars..
Didn’t think the wrx ra got upto 10k yet ! Mint Sti ra maybe but the wrx ones still kicking around for 4-6k if you look!
Still cracking cars tho I loved the 7 imprezas I owned even as daily drivers
Always have an eye on an Impreza Type R,... im curious how they fare compared to the R32 GTR
Always wanted one of the 1st gen cars, never quite bit the bullet. I always thought RA was Rally Altered as it got lightweight parts etc?
Your quivering voice just goes to show what a rough rider it is on those forest wheels lol.
I have an STI Hatch if you want one to review, very lightly modded. Though I'm in Northern Ireland.
I looked up to that car when I was young and resented (and still resent) the French manufacturers for not stepping up their game when they dominated the rally scene during the 2000s. Why no 4WD, turbocharged Citroën Xsara/C4 ? That is beyond me. Especially since Sébastien Loeb was, and for the most part still is, one of the French personalities people look up to.
About this Subaru in particular, white with white decals is quite a refreshing view!
homologation regulations, or a lack thereof. To get type approval done and tool up for mass production is really expensive, and if they'd only realistically sell in low numbers the price is going to be epic, so nobody would buy them. It's not the same as subaru upgrading a car which is already 4wd etc, i'm not sure if the psa platforms were designed with 4wd drive in mind.
i fully agree with what you're saying though, the lack of homologation specials is frustrating, especially given how many "gt3" and track day cars get sold these days, all for crazy money.
nobody would pay that kind of money for a french piece of crap that would have nothing but electrical problems. french cars are shit
Great car the RA, another great rally car rep is the Evo from Mitsubishi and the 6 being the daddy 😇😁
I'm hoping to get more Evos on the channel this year
Great car ja, I've got two TME,s , my reason for saying that 😂😂😂😂
Maybe Jay will seek out the real daddy of all things performance Subaru namely the 89 Legacy RS it being a Homologation Special like the usual suspects
Pretty much any Skyline except the R34GTR is obtainable and realistic. R32GTR/R33GTR/R34GTT are all around £25k UK price and should only appreciate in value. R32/R33GTT can be had from 10k
GC8 Impreza WRX debuted in 1992 and had continuous tweaks on models until 2000, when it was replaced by significantly heavier and stiffer GDB chassis
It was generally available as standard WRX, WRX Type RA, WRX Version STi, and WRX Type RA Version STi, and later the two door Type R Version STi
Few special trims like 'V limited' and '555' were available on some of the models, mostly cosmetic add ons
Some notable dates for GC8 Impreza WRX:
- 1992 Debut with 240ps, with Type RA being 1170kg (50kg lighter than standard) and cheaper, most of the weight saving is from no A/C, no sound system, no ABS and crappy wheels
- 1993 Automatic with 220ps added
- 1994 STi version added with 250ps, Type RA STi version added with 275ps later in the same year
- 1995 STi version II with 275ps, also available as Type RA
- 1996 STi version III with 280ps, also available as Type RA
- 1997 Type R (two door coupe) for version III, later in the year version IV is available for all 3 types
- 1998 22B - basically a Type R STi version IV with stroked engine and wide body kit, with few other goodies, 400 total made, 1270kg, probably the most collectible due to its fame. Version V of the three standard types available later that year, seem to be the most desirable 'standard' versions
- 1999 Version VI, minor upgrade over V, some people prefer the version V look, Type RA - 1240kg, Type R - 1260kg, Standard - 1270kg (same as version V weight for all three)
- 2000 S201, another collectible, rated as '300 PS', has pretty much all the STi parts thrown on to it, 300 total made, 1270kg
More detailed info available under US and JP Wikipedia, and also goo-net.jp catalog
I'm pretty sure 'RA' stood for 'Record Attempt', at least throughout GC8 and GDB platform, where the original run of the Type RA model under WRX (shown in this video) was for some record attempting purpose
no. record attempt was for later models. they also did a wrx type r non sti
@@marcwilliams9285 Thanks
I love this but prefer the legacy RS. That would be my dream car.
Everyone forgets to mention the original model of Impreza, they only start talking about the bug eye on onwards.
RA stands for Record Attempts per Subaru at least on later models.
I’ve had an estate version of the basic two litre boxer one of these fifteen years ago. I loved the blue colour, the pillarless windows, that amazing planted feel and stability around corners. Even the fuel consumption was okay at around 30mpg, with an auto gearbox. However, the panels are thin and the car feels really cheap. The dashboard is so uninspiring and Subaru servicing costs are high. I also drove a few Legacy Outbacks at work and they are also miles away from German premium refinement. However, the big Subaru engines and the all-wheel-drive system makes you forget about all of that. Just one thing - maybe the WRX, STI models have no estate variants, but avoid the saloons as you’ll look like a thug!
I thought RA stood for record attempt, or was it only the newer model they took to the ring?
When the RS Cosworth was the car i had 3 over the years, Early 3 door, 2wd Sapphire then 3dr RS 500. But they are now old cars & will start having problems, but the prices people are paying for them they must be mental. A 2 litre ST Focus puts out 70 bhp more than the first RS Cosworth & is a better car. Get your ass in the RS Focus & you realise what a great car is. Forget spunking Ferrari prices on 30 year old (Ford) Cosworth, mugs game.
Im confused that you did a review with very little knowledge. RA is Race Altered , which is why its lighter. only available in red or white. top end is around 120 mph only but usually restricted to the 112. you drove it like a granny, didnt once hear the impreza groan . and there should be plenty power before 4000 revs, thats for sure. the reason the engine is stronger is its a closed deck and well sought after for big power
Yes, yes, Subaru, all very nice I'm sure. But what's that at 5:26? It's all a bit blurry - Merc? Alvis?
Alvis
RA means lightweight in Japan. Rally application
The prices for RA's here in NZ are so rediculos. They are up to $30,000. for $30k here you can buy a C6 RS6!
pls some early evo

Being a hooligan's car, isn't Impreza insurance really expensive? Someone once told me that it's cheaper to insure an old Skyline GTR. Personally I prefer an old Legacy. I like the flat-6 version despite it not being the most powerful version. I like the idea of the flat-6 and four driven wheels.
It's better than it was

@@martinsmith7270 STI didn't exist at the time this car was produced...
I used to own a WRX STI 330S and at the time I lived on the roads where they hold the Jim Clark Rally, my house was literally on the track and the roads were so quiet 90% of the year. I had such a good time driving around those roads in the Subaru, you had great visibility for 90% of the road over the fields so no blind corner Russian Roulette. Its such a good drive on the B6355 between Berwick Upon Tweed and Edinburgh (highly recomended and beautiful road), its mostly B/C roads with every type of corner long straights hills and valleys, great car (0-60 in 4.8 secs, Pro-drive Exhaust) fantastic road - the stuff of dreams!!!!!! You can pick a low mileage one up for around £10k. There's a picture of the back of mines on my channel if you click on my name.

A know all on cars but can't say MCRAE. IT'S MCRAE not muck ray. Turned it off at that point.
Nah, a real rally car only has 2 driven wheels, like a BDA mk2 . After that sort of car it all went downhill. Some great stuff in car control and grunt in Irish rallies from Millington powered Mk2. What you’re putting up here is a wannabes’ poseur car.
:)
Shame the Impreza is cheaply made
They spent the money on excellent and solid mechanicals. German manufacturers spent it on sound deadening and soft touch plastics, I know which I'd rather.
I'm not entirely sure the Subarus I know have especially solid mechanicals
@@JayEmmOnCars what ones do you know have had issues? Mine (RB5 & Spec C RA) have been faultless in 10 years of ownership other than head gaskets caused by a split radiator. They are well know on pistonheads and other forums as being very tough. The P1 had engine issues caused by incorrect mapping and relying on an octane boosting pill but the drivetrains are solid hence farmers use legacys regularly.

What an absolute piece of dreadfully modified shit, rally car.... utter budget road rally perhaps. And roll cage padding, err looks like a vinyl cover tie wrapped and duct taped on, proper FIA padding is the best part of 2 inches thick. That shit on there wouldn't do FA if your head hit it.
Sorry I know you got this car from a vendor to test, but waxing lyrical about this piece of shit just discredits your otherwise trust worthy and reliable opinion on cars.
Keep up the otherwise great work though.
