    John's appreciation for playing music is unprecedented and a pleasure to watch. Not to mention this is definitely the best lineup The Mountain Goats have had to date.

      Benjamin Bird Amen to this. I love the work John Vanderslice and Annie Clark did on Heretic Pride and the Bright Mountain Choir on the early stuff and whatnot, but this is the best full-time lineup without a doubt. I feel like a solid 30% of my tMG listening is just agog over Jon "funniest drummer/drummiest funny person" Wurster's artistic craft, lol

    their music takes me back to the days of the band 'They Might Be Giants' and The Decemberists. Their second song they preformed, 'Andrew Eldrich is moving back to Leeds' totally reminds me of the song 'birdhouse in your soul'. Interesting how the drummer brings in a disco type sound into the mix with his particular style of drumming to their music.

      If you're looking to get deeper in, I'd recommend listening through The Sunset Tree, Beat the Champ, Moon Colony Bloodbath, or Transcendental Youths. This band is pretty old and there's tons of older albums and songs.

    I believe an E major technically has a G# not an Ab because the natural A is the 4th but that's less important than how amazing The Mountain Goats are

      You're both right. G# and Ab are the same note, but the key of Emaj has four sharps. Those sharps are all the flats of different notes, but they're always referenced as sharps with regard to Emaj, because music theory.

      oh jeeze, i don't think that's a problem. new fans and old fans like the new material alike. new fans are happy to hear old tunes and old fans are happy to see new fans. I think his point is more about a mindset of being stuck in the past that's toxic. not liking things from the past.

    I was traveling through the airport in December after a medical procedure, and checked out a book store while waiting for my plane home,. In the front of the store was a display of Devil House, a new mystery novel by John Darnielle. I guess he's written three mysteries now, so he has that to fall back on if the music doesn't work out.

    Yet without "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," music would be much different. Whether one likes the album or not, it was a revolutionary album and it influenced countless bands that followed, as well as many other bands of the time. One can only wonder where music would have led if not for all the innovations that existed within that one album alone.

    • @meatcreap
      @meatcreap Před 5 lety +1

      danman6669 I agree to some extent, but I feel like that’s missing the thrust of what he was saying. Understanding and steeping yourself in the past is something that’s important, but looking back with rueful wonder and sadness for what’s come to pass is another. I thought his ideas about nostalgia were really heartfelt and valuable. Lonely Hearts gave us a lot, but being cautioned against the perils of staring backwards while life hurtles fruitfully on is important, too.

    • @tonyjofenig6833
      @tonyjofenig6833 Před 5 lety +1

      @@meatcreap I think danman actually proved JD's point about nostalgia. Reverence and nostalgia should not be conflated, they are two different things, people need to listen a little harder to what is being said.

      @AbrahamRomney Před rokem

      Not that you've been waiting three years to get this answer, but, yes, you can do inversions on the guitar. He seems to be a bit of a strumner, however, so I don't think it's the way he's used it playing the guitar.
