    Falcons GM told us half the reason they drafted Penix. He believes they won't be drafting that high again because Kirk will make them better. However, the part he didn't say out loud was that they don't believe one more player at pick 8 is going to make Kirk a Superbowl winning QB. They needed a QB that'll win enough games that they don't get fired while they prepare the team for Penix to take over. Now, they won't have to trade away the farm to move up for a QB or suck for a season with a bridge QB when they decide to move off Kirk. If Kirk couldn't win a Superbowl with what he had in Minnesota, they know he ain't going to do it in ATL, but he'll probably win enough games that the owner won't fire the coach and GM within the next couple years.

      i think the real disconnect is that the fans think that we're only in win now mode. if we were just in win now then they would've hired bill. I think blank wants to win now while ensuring the stability of the the franchise long term so his family won't have to worry as much when whichever one of his kids inherits the team since blank did say he wanted the franchise to stay in the family. this goes with the raheem hire

      @@natureredux1957 I don't even understand why people think ATL is in win-now mode. That team in not a good QB away from a Superbowl. However, they're a bad QB away from the HC and GM getting bounced in a year or two, which is exactly why they paid Cousins. They have a long term plan, but they need to win enough that the owner doesn't hit the reset button early. They paid Kirk so they can stay in the building and build this team for when Penix takes over. I actually now think this pick makes more sense than when GB drafted Love. GB had a good team and a Superbowl winning QB. An extra weapon for Rodgers may have pushed them over the hump. ATL drafting Odunze wasn't going to push ATL over the hump. They haven't found the hump yet.

    If you think about it, the move was brilliant. Atl got a veteran QB for 2 years and is right in the playoff race. With the verteran QB, all teams assumed Atlanta wouldn't draft a QB and didn't trade up and they could get them Penix. Many teams wanted him.

      The problem is they paid Cousins an insane amount of money and signed him for 4 years. That’s an elite QB contact. It was crazy. That was probably the huge mistake. If Cousins knew that they were planning to oust him ASAP, barely before his reign in Atlanta begins, I doubt he would’ve wanted to go to Atlanta. Minnesota was such a better spot for him. Now they have a terrible situation where Cousins feels wronged AND they’ve done Penix wrong because Penix should be starting immediately and now he’s going to sit and do nothing for at least 2 years probably.

    Since everyone keeps bringing up money as a reason to not like the move … which Investment Decision would be more expensive in your eyes as a GM and Coach ?
    1. Taking the second best QB in your eyes bc (he fell to you) at 8 (where you’ll have 5yrs of flexibility) while u have a 100m dollar Starter (currently rehabbing) on a 2 yr deal (essentially)
    or
    2. Draft a DE that could turn out to be no better than Beasley or Takk and wait until next year to TRY and trade up which would require something like 3 firsts & 2 second rounders to come from the 20s where Kirk will have you positioned due to his success in the regular season. and then that guy may not even be as good as Penix in your eyes (but you Need a QB bc you passed on one in 24’) 🤨

    I get his point about planning farther in advance. But to be honest, the Falcons fired a coach and there's wasn't a guarantee that Fontenot was going to be the GM depending on who they hired as HC. So the clock started essentially when they hired Raheem Morris. I love the all of the above approach. And Colin points out, they have all these young offensive weapons that are on rookie deals. So it's ok if they spend a lot on Cousins and have Penix in waiting.

The worst decision would've been to stick to a timeline that you no longer believe in just because there's a sunk cost in Cousins. Don't compound one mistake with another if you think Penix is a franchise QB, Cousins is certainly not that at 35 (36 by the time the season starts). If Penix is ready in 2 years, no one will care. @@jacobraby45 because giving a qb a 4 yr 180 mil contract when you have a bunch of pieces already on the team is a win now move. Selecting a qb at 8, who is not a project, not young and basically supposed to be NFL ready undercuts that whole win-now signing, especially when it is done within the same offseason/draft season.
      You are negating the advantages of the Kirko deal while negating the benefits of the rookie contract for your #8 pick at qb.
      You are essentially saying we are not willing to go all in with our 45 mil a year qb and will reach for our potential qb of the future who will be closer to 30 than 25 by the time he likely starts. The way it has been done screams of lack of confidence and just poor management of the situation.

    • @MrDemo-mr3tu
      @MrDemo-mr3tu Před 22 dny

      I disagree. The team building on the offensive side of the ball has been in the works the last few off seasons with the selections of Pitts, London and Bijan plus Mooney this year. The defense was a top 15 unit last season with a major injury to Grady and they added to the defense in 5 of their 7 draft selections this year. The missing piece of this roster and biggest weakness was QB. Kirk should address that. Kirk was the final piece of going all in for the now while getting, what they believe, is an elite qb for the future, which is the hardest and most important part to get in the nfl. The only argument to be made for not going all in now is not going Odunze and if you think the roster as it stands now is not a contender, he wouldn’t be enough to make it one.

      @@ugosmith7529 going all in is relative to how close a team is actually to competing for a Super Bowl. The Chiefs using a top 10 pick on Mahomes when Alex Smith got them to the playoffs the year before could be considered not going all in until you realize what they were trying to build.

    The Jordan Love/Michael Penix situations aren’t the exact same. Love was 21 when he was drafted, not 24. He was also a project QB, Penix is more of a ready now QB. Love was a late first rounder, not pick 8. That would be similar to GB having a top 10 pick in 2020 & drafting Tua or Herbert, which I highly doubt they would have done. Also, when Love was drafted, Rodgers had guaranteed money for 2 more seasons, not 4. Plus, Rodgers had been there is whole career. Kirk Cousins just got there. You were more certain what you were getting out of Rodgers, and if things faded quicker than expected, dead cap isn’t an issue. Sure, the end goal is the same: think for the future & continue to be a SB contender after the current QB is done, but there are enough differences to the point where you can’t really call someone a hypocrite if they were fine with/more understandable of the Love pick in 2020 & not a fan of the Penix pick.

    • @tb2704
      @tb2704 Před 22 dny +1

      100 %. This ties into what you were saying, but the Packers were perennial playoff contenders, so Love was somewhat of a luxury pick. The Falcons need to add more talent now to be a SB contender.. they can’t afford to have a blue-chip talent holding a clipboard for 2-3 years.

    • @johnnycash8567
      @johnnycash8567 Před 22 dny

      This is a silly point tho, love looks great but if you had a top 10 pick and want a qb for the future and you think Herbert is your guy then you draft Herbert. An elite quarterback is far more valuable than any other player on the field, I don’t care who he is, Lawrence Taylor, Jerry Rice, Deion Sanders, if you can draft a guy who you think will be top 8-10 for the next decade that’s way more important than anything else. Hell even a good back up is better than an elite skill player because if your starting qb misses 2-3 games in a season that could make or break your season and he the difference in you potentially winning a Super Bowl. Having Nick foles for that stretch Philly did in 2017 was far more valuable than having an elite player at any other position on the field besides qb

Doubt this GM has a lot of respect league wide right now after such a craven act. Atlanta owner must be getting senile to go along with this charade.
