Man, can this man play and can this woman sing. Love her lower register (like Karen Carpenter's, only with more feeling). I'd take her discs to a desert island before Rhianna's, Madonna's and Beyonce's and all the other ridiculous vocal gymnasts any day of the week. Thanks for posting this song - gotta love the line, "I'm a sinner with the keys to paradise".

Marvellous. Saw them at Fleetwood Folk Festival in the late 80's, they killed it.

I believe the song was written by Clive Gregson. He's amazing--I love the lyrics to this one. Poetry.

The sound man should have turned up Clive's guitar. You can barely hear the guitar over Christine's powerful voice. I saw them several times in Richard Thompson's band back in the late eighties, and a couple of times solo in small clubs as well, and they were wonderful. Not to mention that Clive has written and Christine has sungsome of the most chilling songs I've ever heard. I Specialize is one of them, and This is the Deal, about an abusive relationship, is another one. The album titled Hard Cash, with Richard Thompson and various other musicians, has Christine singing a song titled I've Always Been Good With My Hands, about a former factory worker or manual seamstressr who has gotten old and arthritic and doesn't know how she will survive. My favorite album of theirs is titled Mischief; Not A Day Passes and That Same Mistake are standout cuts with particularly good electric guitar and bass playing. That record easily makes the cut to be on my marooned on a desert island with a dozen disks list.

Saw them four years on the trot at the Thekla in Bristol, up until they stopped touring, plus once in RT's backing band at what was the Bierkeller. This song was always a favourite, but not in the set in the performance from the farewell tour (plenty of requests for it from the audience though).

It's just a shame the guitar is nowhere in the mix.
