  • I know the way
    That I feel about you
Im never going to run away
Im never going to run away
    Never knew the way
    When I lived without you
Im never going to run away
Im never going to run away
    I came to you when
    No one could hear me
    Im sick and weary
    Of being alone
    Empty streets and
    Hungry faces
    The worlds no place when
    Youre on your own
    A heart needs a home
    Some people say
    That I should forget you
Im never going to be a fool
Im never going to be a fool
    A better life, they say
    If Id never met you
Im never going to be a fool
Im never going to be a fool
    Tongues talk fire and
    Eyes cry rivers
    Indian givers
    Hearts of stone
    Paper ships and
    Painted faces
    The worlds no place when
    Youre on your own
    A heart needs a home

It takes you deep in. Richard Thompson picks up a guitar but God plays. And Linda's singing is every bit as good as his playing.

It is wonderful that artists evolve and develop over time - you couldnt ever quarrel with a song of RT's he is such a craftsman songwriter and his playing is so fine - Must confess that my favourite era for him is from Liege and Lief up to First Light.
The furious collaborations with Swarbrick and then the spiritual desolation/searching and then the reigious-tune-as-lovesong (which is an old tradition in Sufi Islam)
Planet Waves to Street Legal is a similar peak IMO - the raw true stuff.

Cleapatr, thanks for sharing. I had never heard this gem before. Of course I have heard of Richard and Linda Thompson. I can remember reading Melody Maker and seeing the adverts for "Pour Down Like Silver". I was a teenager in the U.S. so I thought I was cool at the time reading an English music newspaper. Linda's voice is so pure and clear. I would love to hear her sing Jimmy Webb's " The Moon is a Harsh Mistress".
