  • In this video, you can enjoy the cab ride - a train driver's view from Disentis-Mustér to Brig in Switzerland on the famous Glacier Express in the resolution of 4K/60 frames per second.
    Glacier Express (GEX), known as the “slowest express train in the world” is a direct eight-hour end-to-end connection between major Swiss mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz. Operated by a joint-venture between Matterhorn-Gotthard Bahn (MGB) and Rhaetian Bahn (RhB) on the narrow (meter-gauge) railway network in the Swiss central Alps it provides (together with Bernina Express) scenic and exclusive experience.
    This part of our trip takes the Glacier Express train over the Operalp pass. This is the slowest part of our journey, taking over an hour to cover just a 30-kilometer distance between Andermatt and Disentis/Muster, primarily due to the large number of rack rail sections on the 900-meter climb and 600-meter descent from the Oberalp pass.
    Brig MGB station, endpoint of the original Furka-Oberalp (FO) railway, adjacent to the standard-gauge station of Brig operated by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) at the north portal of Simplon Tunnel connecting Switzerland and Italy since 1906. Furka Base Tunnel opened in 1982. Before opening of this 15,4-kilometer base tunnel, Furka-Oberalp railway crossed the Furka pass via old mountain railway (Bergstrecke) peaking at over 2000 meters which is today used as a tourist line during summer by Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke (separate video available).
    Originally, a French company Brig-Furka-Disentis (BFD) railway built a first segment to just beyond Oberwald of the line before WW1 in 1914 paused and slowed further progress, until in 1925 Furka Oberalp Bahn (FO) was formed to take over and complete the whole line by 1926 on it’s whole route from Brig to Andermatt (Furka section) and Andermatt to Diensis (Operalp section). With the connection to (Brig-)Visp-Zermatt (BVZ) railway in 1930 the first Glacier Express train took off on June 25th, 1930, operating since. In 2003. Furka-Oberalp (FO) railway merged with Brig-Visp-Zermatt (BVZ) railway to form Matterhorn-Gotthard Bahn (MGB) as we know today.
    Technically, Furka-Oberalp (FO) railway is just over 100km long from Brig to Disentis/Muster, with Andermatt being 2/3 of the way, operating as narrow-gauge (1000mm) single-track with passing loops and combination of adhesion (max 40‰) and rack sections with Abt system with max incline of 120‰. Like other lines in the MGB and RhB network, it uses unusual 11kV 16,7Hz electrification.

      Yes, indeed. I really like these train rides that go through snow. I used to be a very keen skier, one of those mad people who jumped off cornices and things like that. The sight of snow makes my body twitch. When I see a mountain side covered by snow, I try to work out how I'd ski down it.

    Thanks a lot for the uncut passage through Furka Base Tunnel. I have been looking for a cab ride of this tunnel for a long time. Around 1:22:00 you can even see the famous Bedretto junction towards Ticino (or what might have been a junction). Absolutely fantastic!

    I believe that Disentis/Mustér is the division point is that Matterhorn Gothard Bahn locomotives are equipped to operate on a rack rail system, something that Rhaetian Railway locomotives and EMU's lack. That's why east of Disentis/Mustér, the rail line has lower grades and a lack of a rack system.

    • @Sacto1654
      @Sacto1654 Před 22 dny

      By the way, I noticed that the gradient approaching Brig from both the western and eastern approaches on this line are quite steep.

    • @leeroberts1192
      @leeroberts1192 Před 20 dny

      I think Disentis is we we boarded the Glacier Express when we went on it back in 2010. The train also divided in two there. I'm guessing that the other portion followed a bit behind us.

  • @roadie3124
    @roadie3124 Před 25 dny +1

    Your videos are great! I'm interested in the Abt rack system that is engaged soon after leaving Disentis/Muster and is then disengaged a few minutes later when, I presume, the gradient gets more horizontal. Before seeing this video and a couple of others, I had assumed that the rack system was permanently engaged. Engaging and disengaging depending on the gradient, I presume, is brilliant. I also notice that in sections where there's snow between the running rails, there's a depression in the middle that looks like its made by the train engine's pinion. Is that correct. Does the engine's pinion stay in a fixed position, or can it be raised above the tracks when it's not needed?
    Sorry. I have an engineering degree and I suffer from insatiable curiosity. It's an affliction, but it's immensely interested learning new stuff. 😁😉

    • @RailRelaxation
      @RailRelaxation  Před 25 dny

      @roadie3124 I love the question.Unfortunately I do not have a lot of engineering knowledge myself, but am alway keen to learn new things. About the rack system, it really depends on the gradient and normally it is used only when it s needed. I can not answer you on your second question, I hope someone else can help out. I wish you nice day!

      It's essentially a modern version of the single-horn whistles used by Swiss locomotives probably since the late 1800's.
