Thanks for the review, does this pack into it's pocket/hood?

How is the breathability? I'm looking for a rain jacket for the tropics (south east asia)

A month of thinking and watching reviews went into getting new rain gear and ultimately ended up with the Slate Sky. It’s slimmer fit and minimal.. and has the Patagonia build quality you can depend on. It replaced a baggy Rainshadow I never really liked so never wore.
Edit: been about a month and it’s dumped here in Sacramento and the slate sky has been great. Like really impressive. One time I was caught with AirPods in a pour for a half hour and when I got home they were bone dry under the jacket. I don’t think it would be a great jacket for warm weather hiking.. that’s about the only downside.

@@Engearment yeah we really need more resources like this ☝️ video you’ve made. I’d say 50% of folks buy high-end rain gear without checking the fit, I’ve done it twice last was a baggy Rainshadow.. great jacket but not made for rain more made for layering and protecting layer gear.
This, the Slate Sky is a fitted and basic designed rain jacket. With that said, it’s the most technical too when you account for the fabrics used and the sewing.
The only downside to what I’m suggesting is.. it requires someone buying all Patagonia jackets and that is silly. Patagonia whole point is to make great gear you don’t need to buy multiples of. So.. here’s to hoping we find a medium.
Cause these video reviews showing off the gear on an actual person, then that person telling how it feels, is crucial.
Sorry for my rant, I love the outdoors and as I get older I try an only buy gear that (in theory) I shouldn’t have to purchase again for a loooong time if at all. That should always be the goal. And avoid Gore-Tex like the plague, that stuff is horrible for the planet and should be reserved for NASA and Everest Sherpas, I’m not trying to be funny there.

@@Errcyco Thank you so much for the nice note. Really means a lot. I appreciate that you pick up on the way we like to do reviews - showing how it fits and functions in the real world. Mattis is so good at conveying his insights too. He is such a great guy and an absolute joy to be around.
Totally agree with you on how tricky it can be to find the right fit (and function) on outdoor gear. Different elements for different people.
Good call on the bad for the environment with some WPB membranes. There has been a BIG push to go PFC free and chemical free in most line ups. Hoping this shift helps the environment as well. Take care!

If I go true to size will it fit a mid layer?

How does it compare to Torrentshell 3L? Why buy one over the other? Color only?

The torrentshell we tested felt a little thicker in the material. Also, the design is a little different. Good choices either way you go.

Patagonia Slimfit in the U.S. is box shaped. In Europe we have slimfit as V-shape…
Why is all Patagonia made to fit a smaller fridge? I always have to take the sewingmashine out if I buy Patagonia clothing… 🤨

Hello! That is very interesting. Perhaps europeans are more athletic than some of the US? LOL

I’m 6’3 and rail skinny.. like I’m not going to try and polish it up. And Patagonia clothes all feel like they were custom made for me most of the time. Even when I buy to large or small somehow.
They are definitely making clothes for lanky folks. If you’re kinda shreaded up and muscular try Arc’Teryx.. even their slim fits are way more spacious in the breast area to accommodate muscles and stuff.
This is all subjective but from my experience seems to hold up. Or, play it safe and buy the layered shells like the granite crest and Torrentshell. Both are made baggy to accommodate layers (and muscle I suppose).
