- Today I review the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Jacket after two years of solid use, I've worn this jacket up Mont Blanc, along the Ridgeway along the South Downs way AND even from London to Birmingham. It has been my go to jacket for the last 2 years and I'd highly recommend it.

2 years with this thing! What a ride, hope you found this video helpful! 👊 Go check out my other hiking films to see this in action!! What should I review next? 🥳🔥
I'm 61 years old, and I've got a few Patagonia Parka's that I've had over 35 years now and they're just phracking awesome still, and are as good today as the day I bought them. I highly recommend Patagonia and hope those of you who buy Patagonia enjoy yours as much as I've enjoyed mine.
Absolute legend
Ive had mine for around the same time and still love it! The half zippered design of mine has less breathability with no pit zips but still performs well as a third layer on top of down or fleece. It is relatively heavy but that makes me feel more confident about its durability. I live in a very rainy city and have mine with me every day. I just reapplied DWR for the first time yesterday even though it was not definitely necessary as the original coating seems very durable in my experience.
I've had one for about a year and I agree with everything you said about the jacket. It is the one item that is always in my bag.
Great review. Much appreciated.
amazing review and very insightful thanks!
Thanks for the excellent review! I bought the jacket after seeing your review alone. It's a shame I couldn't use your affiliate link to buy the jacket as Amazon's US store only carries a handful of Patagonia items for some reason. I do like the idea of supporting the original brand by purchasing directly from their website though so all's good in my book. Can't wait to go on adventures having this jacket with me :D
Brilliant review. Cheers!
Great video. Persuaded me to give it a try!
Nice, I just bought it last week.
Not regret
Very useful review. Thank you!
Best jackiet i am ever have in my 21 years. I have turquoise color.💎
I’ve had mine a month, it’s very comfortable and waterproof, and keeps the wind out. I can put up the hood when listening to podcasts, and the pockets are good. I would like an inner pocket. The only negative is that it gets damp inside after 90 minutes, not very, just a thin layer of sweat.
Thanks for the info! Stoked on my torrentshell! Hopefully we get some rain this year!
Great review. I'll be considering this after watching your video.
Great review, thanks.
Yeah I love mine.
I have had mine for 4-5 years. Same one. Have brought it on trips. I even ranged from 200-240 while owning the jacket and was able to wear it. wore snugger at 240 but not crazy in a Large size. Bought it as a broke college student and cant justify buying another rain/outshell jacket
Good review 😊
Very nice review.
Pit zips make such a difference
Thanks man for the review. I'm currently looking for jacket and looks like this is my main candidate. I was using Jack Wolfskin, but yikes got in crazy heavy rain in Bavaria. Literally gear didn't endure after 15mins of that downpour. Returned it, let's see when I'm able to try this one :)
Yo ! Good to meet you in Tescos :)
Great video, do you use an insulating/down jacket with this throughout winter?
Ordering one now with my credit from recycling my last one! Patagonia hooked me up when my last version of this delaminated…and lost all waterproof capability. Thanks for great review!
Thank for your comment David 💪 I really appreciate the support 🔥
@@DavidPMcEntee got it in grey. Love the fit, color, etc. I put it on and promptly took a shower to test it. No water got through!
I just.bought mine a couple days ago and I was wondering, how do you wash it? People have told me not to use softener or dryer sheets because it ruins the DWR and other things such at line drying is a better option than machine drying.
If you want this same quality and price from Patagonia for rain gear but a more refined and slimmer fit, the Skate Sky is whatsup. I just got one and love it. Torrentshell is to baggy, it’s not slim at all. It is however the toughest rain gear you’re finding for under $200 and is an excellent windbreaker as well.
Link to it? 👀
Nice video, David! Just wanted to ask you (I haven’t read the comments so you might have already answered this question), is the jacket seam-sealed on the inside? That’s the ultimate deal breaker on me getting one. I’d prefer that it is! Thanks a lot and all the best!
Yes it is!! 💪 Super waterproof this coat!
I hope the inner lining has been redesigned since I bought mine ~10 years ago. It completely disintegrated, and is the only Patagonia product I’ve been disappointed in.
Have seen a lot of the older versions of this going the same way on eBay!
So positive 😁
nice review mate, thanks, I'm almost sold but I can you comment on breathability for use with cycling or running? I'm also looking at the granite crest jacket but aren't sure if I need to take the step up.. cheers
what colorway is this ? looks great !
thx!
Hey David, amazing video! I have a question about layering :))
I’m looking to buy the Patagonia nano puff jacket, but I’m not sure if the hooded or non hooded version is the best for me… Does a hooded puffy jacket work well under a hard shell/ rain coat? Or is a non hooded puffy jacket the better option with a hard shell over it?
Everything is a trade off. If you're planning to use these together a lot, get a non hooded. Wearing something with a hood underneath something wit a hood can be pretty uncomfortable. Wearing these together will limit breathability.
Hi ☺️ thank you for perfect review. Can you recommend any warm mid layer to the winter ? I already order this jacket, but I am not sure which mid layer will be good for temperatures under 0°C. Than you 😊
Thanks so much for the support! I’d recommend some kind of fleece or RAB breathable hoodie! 😁
Hi! Thanks for the review! I am on the fence of purchasing this for winter jacket. Do you think this jacket is sufficiently warm for winter/winter hiking purpose? Thanks!
I use this as a winter jacket all the time. I layer their nano puff coat underneath and it’s perfect…. I have skied in it and used it during this weekend’s -30* F winter storm and it kept me plenty warm
Whats a good patagoinia jacket that is waterproof and warm in the mountains. Or even in the snow (if you got to layer the jacket in the snow its also fine) just a good all arounder?
Anyone have thoughts on Finnistere? Expensive but do they justify the price?
It's a pretty good jacket....I've had mine for a few months now...but then I seen the Mont Odyssey and was like wtf $600 and I paid $200 for Patagonia
Is the pants also good?
So is it a hardshell? Reading around and other people claim it is only a soft shell, good for warmer weather/rain jacket.
What higher spec jacket? I am looking for the best.
What is your height and size of this jacket?
What size is yours and how tall are you?
Hey cool vid! How tall are you and what size do you recommend?
5”11 and a Medium 😁
Hello from Philadelphia PA! Great review. They sell for $125.00 dollars over here.
Need help! Can someone tell me where I can get the Torentshell 3L without the Patagonia patch but with the print? why are there two different models? are the ones with the imprint older models?
I got my arms wet after 1 hour of heavy rain in the alps, while my friend with a very expensive shell still totally dry.
just wondering, if I use a Patagonia Down Jacket (XS) Size, should I go a size up for the Torrentshell?, if I intend to use it together?
I actually just purchased the torretshell today. I plan to use it with my nano puff jacket from Patagonia. I kept with the same size but it a little snug. I’d suggest sizing up if you want a looser fit.
How tall are you and what size are you wearing?? I am usually an M but idk if this jacket is baggy or not if that makes any sense, to like put a sweater under it HELPPPPPPP
Great review, think I’ll buy. How tall are you? I’m between small and medium so just asking for reference!
I’m 5”10 so in a similar situation to you!
@@DavidPMcEnteewhat size are you wearing in the video?
with past experiences...kinda weary of washing this...how do you do that?
what color is?
Just curious what you use as a midlayer and a baselayer below this thing?
A RAB down jacket and a T-shirt’s or light sun hoodie 👊 Hope this helps!!
Do you find that the hood drawstrings loosen? I pull them tight to cinch around my face but they don't stay tight. Thanks.
Yep mine too!
also, with GTX fabric, the inner tends to taint sweat very badly. Two wears and it was tainted, cannot be washed.
GTX can and should be washed
Your blue and white stripe t-shirt is super cool. Where did you get that?
Jeeeeeez I can’t give all my secrets away now can I Tommaso! Isn’t the Patagonia jacket enough!😉😂 Kidding - it was from TK Max! 👊
Jeeeeeez I can’t give all my secrets away now can I Tommaso! Isn’t the Patagonia jacket enough!😉😂 Kidding - it was from TK Max! 👊
Oh, thank you ☺️
Hello there, is it good against wind? I have a Northface soft shell jacket, which is a "windwall", and it is actually perfect in wind. But its not 100% waterproof. So im looking for a jacket that is both 100% waterproof and windproof, I dont want to carry two jackets.
Yes definitely!! 🥳 Very hardy!!
I have the Fjallraven Eco shell which is a brand supporting protecting the planet. It performs incredibly well and I considered the pocket issue which this jacket has them on the chest. Same issue with the hood rivets though. Pain in the a**e. However the vents are at the chest/waist side which as an added bonus you can reach your fleece pockets when bot wearing a rucksack 🎒
Hey’ch!
Do u mind if I ask how tall u are and around what weight? Wanna see if I would be a medium as well
I’m around 75kg and stand at 5ft .11
Great video, what size are you wearing?
Medium 😁
I wore my new Torrentshell for the first time last night...45F, low activity, not overheating or very warm, medium level of rain, 40 minutes. At home I saw the fabric had wetted out where my pack straps were (thin Kanken straps, pack almost empty) and all over my back where the pack was, plus in circles around the pit zips. Inside was dry but the pit zips were damp - I had closed the zippers all the way up to the top. Is this normal? I was walking, arms down. I figure, after 2+ years of having one you will know. I'd appreciate your input! I can't imagine wearing this on a long-distance hike in a torrential downpour (the irony..).
Sounds to me that the moisture is sweat and condensation, not outside rain. A waterproof jacket can't protect you from your own sweat.
@@moksel Sweat on the outside, not on the inside except carefully placed only on the inner zippers? :D I was not sweating the slightest, if anything it felt cold and I wasn't exerting myself. Thanks for replying though! :) PS: Clothing was dry...
Sounds a bit too anecdotal and circumstantial for me to answer properly really I’m afraid! I’ve not had any such problems
@@DavidPMcEntee I thought I was being rather detailed...why anecdotal/circumstantial? Curious what information I'd need to provide.
I mean, this is my biggest concern about buying a new, expensive raincoat. My past experience with cheepo’s has been like you describe , the worst usual down down the front side of my chest and stomach is soaked when I ride my motorcycle. It’s seems that the heat from our body draws the water right through the so-called waterproof material just like water condensation on the outside of a cold glass of liquid from the warmer air outside. My theory/idea was to purchase one that has a relatively thick insulated lining that would possibly prevent this from happening.?
Does the jacket have any warmth?
Looks like it doesn’t have a lining so I would imagine that it does not.
Hi, most likely a very simple solution. I've pulled the draw strings on the good but now cannot get it back to the original 'loose' fit. I realise the toogles are hidden but man I'm having trouble. Help appreciated.
Sorry bud! I know nothing about repairs
What color combo is this?
Blue and red amigo
How often have you cleaned and reproofed it ?
Not once!!
@@DavidPMcEntee I don't get it. I had a Berghaus Paclte top and leggings, cost me about £100 or so each and lasted me over 10 years and never cleaned them once. I did lots of trips cycling in very wet weather, did a kilimanjaro challenge and never once got wet and on top of really cold hills and they kept me warm.
I lost the trousers over time and then the top, when I realised I should be cleaning it, that was the worst mistake as the taped seams came apart.
In recent years I've been told to clean garments every season by person in-store. Is this really the case or do they not make them the same any more ????
Current gear is Gortex Pro and I had to buy another because I put on too much weight during lockdown. Not cleaned them yet.
I'm only going to clean/proof them if they stop beading in wet weather.
My jackets zip always snags! It's very annoying
Amongst Patagonia’s rain capable jackets, this thing is inexpensive and well worth it.
Agreed!!
I have the same jacket (different colour), and have had it for about 18 months. I did a lot of research before buying, but it hasn't lived up to expectations for me. I don't think it breathes that well (I have a Decathlon jacket at half the price that breathes much better, and is just as waterproof). The pocket position is awful, if you're wearing a pack with a hip belt (which is basically all the time). And, when I wore it in a storm last year the rain drove right through it and I ended up soaking wet. Even the pockets filled up with water (they were zipped shut btw).
However, there are plus points: It has a roomy fit, so if I need to layer up around camp, and stay dry, then I can; It packs up fairly small; It's relatively lightweight.
I haven’t had half as many problems as you have Dean! I love it! 🥳
@@DavidPMcEntee yes, a lot of people do. The reviews I read were very positive about it (for its price point, at least), all rating 4* or 5*.
But once I've reached my target weight loss I'll sell this on and get a Paramo Velez jacket. I've heard nothing but good things about how Paramo waterproofs manage moisture, their durability, and ethical manufacture.
May I ask which Decathlon you found great? I am in this research phase at the moment :)
@@slmjz hi, I replied earlier, but it's been removed (might be because I included a link). It's the Quechua MH500 waterproof jacket.
@@deaneager The Decathlon is more expensive than the Patagonia here! lol.
How breathable is it in 50-55* F (10-13* C) rainy weather?
Also, you might want to check out Arc’Teryx - would really fit the bill for that. All my mid layers are Arc’Teryx and they’re awesome.
Well, that brand is way too expensive compared to Patagonia in the video.
Is this jacket can use for cold weather? or you layer another jacket inside of this jacket
A down jacket is better for warmth! 😁
@@DavidPMcEntee OK , and how did you layer with this jacket when you go into the coldest place ?
@@timmyblabla down jackets 😁
Hi is this the blue tidal colour?
It’s the red and blue one 😁
@@DavidPMcEntee haha😱
I think what you need is a Mountain Equipment jacket. Made more for what you need. Patagonia is now a fashion brand.
They make the very best stuff. I think you meant Mountiqn Hardwear
@@bradpruett7385 Nope. Mountain Equipment.
I miss at least one internal pocket.
The hoods looks abit small.
It’s tight!! But it works
Just one question. Was this a paid review? I'll have a look see.
Nope! I’d have mentioned that in the video if it was! 💙
@@DavidPMcEntee thank you for clarification. I've only seen a few of your vlogs so I'm feeling my way around. Now for my question. I'm doing The Ethel Challenge and I've never walked before, in the hills that is, so bearing in mind I'm only 5 Ethels in and just starting out and don't at this point want to spend a massive amount until I'm sure I'll stick it out rather than being a couch potato. Is there a lower price jacket for a person starting out on their journey? Should I still have the same enthusiasm is 6 months then this is something I would consider. I hope that this makes sense. Newbie jacket for day hikes only. Appreciate any help.
Mine after 4 years is still water proof but not replant it gets soaked. I end up looking like a wet chicken.
Try this - Nikwax Tech Wash and TX Direct Twin Pack
you can purchase sprays that reapply a waterproof layer
If a jacket/coat does not cover the "butt" with a waist draw cord its a NO GO.
£160 or €187.
Boys oh boys, that's a fair old price for a small light jacket.
Thanks for eventually mentioning your gripes with the hood release and the low lying pockets.
Sadly since the founder retired, Patagonia has taken a turn for the worse. Most recently forcing customer service teams to come back in the office, or resign. Easy way to affect mass layoffs. They won't be getting any more of my business, like ordering this jacket as I was about to do.
Hi guys, my father and I both have has this jacket for about 7 years. After these 7 years, the are totally falling apart. So, I will be buying a new jacket soon.
While one could say that 7 years is plenty of time/use for a jacket of that type, my father has other jackets of the same/lower price ranges that lasted a lot longer.
While I am of the opinion that I spent my money well 7 years ago, I am wondering if others have had the same experience. If so, I will probably be going for an alternative as there are plenty of options that so last 7+ years.
So if any of you have (or have not) had this experience, pls lmk!
Ps. I do love Patagonia for everything they do and I definitely recommend their products to others!
My HellyHansen lasted 25 years, before the zipper gave up. And I wore it a lot.
