I've been collecting since 1989, me and my son have everything from atari2600 to ps5 ... THIS is why collectors collect, not to turn a profit, but to make smiles.
Nostalgic investments? Those 2 words go together like peanut butter and sardines.
It's because we, as Americans, get fed the "hustle culture" bullshit from every angle. You can't just have fun or an intellectual pursuit in America, you are expected to monetize it. The fact that this dude went from coins to video games shows that he's a hustler, not a collector. He's the kind of guy who puts "Entrepreneur" as his title on social media, because his goal is a house in the Hollywood Hills, not to play games.
"Nostalgic Investments": Because your fond childhood memories need to be turned into huge money sinks for rich folks who never touched a game in their lives!
Most of us know the Nerdy Girl Danielle's collection is her boyfriends. She knew nothing about comics until she got with him
This!
These guys gotta seal their feelings and grade what really matters in life. What business has ever profited from attacking people at conventions?
@Andrea darex I believe you when you say you lost things trying to trade your self.
@clare Terrible bot. "I have 15 million dollars and I still sit on CZcams commenting."
I think I'm blessed because if not I wouldn't have met someone who is as spectacular as expert Gergely I think he is the best broker I ever seen
He's always active on What's Apk messenger👇👇
Jesus, CZcams gotta do something about these bot accounts
so glad you’re still on this topic. These people are not gamers. If they were, they’d understand that people are not paying millions of dollars for a game that can be played millions of different ways. So, maybe they can work a con on other people with a million dollars to burn, because, as we know, you don’t have to be smart to be rich. These people are utterly delusional.
I love the fact that I collected games way before they were even a thing. I might be sitting on several thousand dollars worth of stuff but I enjoy it more than I think I'm going to get money out of it. And I may have passed on some good deals, but that's not why I collect games I collect them because I like them
I've been collecting since 1989, me and my son have everything from atari2600 to ps5
Same brotha. Thumbs up.
Amen.
I could sell off my collections and easy get $20,000 for everything. But the whole point of why I got into collection was because of the fun of collection and not the value of the things I collect.
Same. Not just video games. Magazines going back to the 60s, B-movies no one cared about that are now worth something (random example since it's Halloween season: Vampirella double pack DVD. Can't remember what the second movie is. That I bought for like a dollar at a goodwill years back because it looked entertaining in a so bad it's good way), and stuff like that that everyone thought I was literally insane for showing any interest in but now they're expensive collector's items that I'm not parting with ever because I enjoy having it, because they are extensions of my personality and interests. It would be like selling a leg. I don't care if my leg is worth a billion dollars I'm not parting with it.
"I'm a true collector I've been collecting since 2015" lmao never has a qoute made me laugh so hard but feel annoyed lol
I really don't understand sealed collecting. When I worked at Software ETC in the 90s we would seal them in the back. We were alloud to take them home, play them, and reseal them.
They grade the seals themselves too! It's insane.
I just want to collect video games in peace without having to worry about clueless "investors" hijacking our hobby
A real investor gets excited when they believe that a market has overcorrected because it's an opportunity to buy below value. If they really thought you were tanking the market below where it should be, they'd want you to keep doing it. When an investor decides to shoot the messenger, it's because they suspect it isn't really an overcorrection at all and that the price may not recover because it never should have been so high in the first place and they were the sucker left holding the bag.
As someone who is into precious metals you're 100% correct!
Not to mention, a good would be investing in like, stocks and shit. I can see how anyone actually thinks media would retain any kind of value.
Pat should have told the guy instead of an apology or being on the podcast, how about a third option! How about a jumbo jack!
That reminds me, I need to get my copy of Pokemon Plant 'Em graded by WATA!
The jumbo jack SUCKS, they aren't even going be making it soon.
@@JohnSmith-yd5wq Thats exactly the reaction Peter would have given if Pat said that.
I’m a CIB collector as well as a sealed collector. Each field has its own pros and cons. It’s all about the enjoyment factor and the passion in the hunt and the feel when an item is in our possession.
Sealed collecting and graded games aren’t the problem, but it’s the people who are hyping and market-manipulating the shit out of everything and putting their faces everywhere to price pump their items. That’s the common enemy to collectors in general.
yep it's the bandwagon jumpers who don't like games, don't play games and don't care about games. Ending up with an "investment" they don't really care for that's now worth a fraction of it's price. WE would be happy to have those games in our collection (albeit, not at those insane prices). The market corrects itself when the posers lose interest.
I was referring more to those who are overtly trying to promote their inventory in order to lure hypothetical dumbass millionaires. They are showing themselves everywhere to get the word out that “games are worth millions!”.
You hit the nail on the head. Collecting will never be the issue. If you like something and have the disposable income to pursue and partake in the hobby, then enjoy. The problem is, these morons jumping into it to exploit people. They have no emotional investment in the games. It's about money. With that comes, dirty tactics, lying, manipulation. Nothing productive. Worse, the people who genuinely enjoy the hobby get priced out. They are the ones who suffer the most. It was a very price friendly hobby that got ruined due to greed. It is such a shame to see this spill over into the loose carts and non-sealed games as well. Sure my collection has quadrupled in value but I couldn't care less about that. I will never sell them. I'm just upset I am unable to continue adding to my collection at the pace I was doing so pre-bubble.
People also bought Gamestop stock at $250. They're called gamblers. lol.
Sealed video games before the jewel case era are a dangerous investment anyways, the shrink-wrap can damage and warp the box over time.
You know what bugs me the most about this interaction..... The sealed game speculators should really be crazy mad at herritage auctions and wada.... They caused the bubble, and by extension the situation where these people would lose all their money. I guess that's hard to see for them. It's like talking to someone stuck in an MLM. Hopefully later when they see the light they realize it could have been much worse for them and that Pat and Carl (etc) are not the cause of their pain.
As a long time game collector who has avoided sealed gaming even before the boom I appreciate you guys being honest. Let’s keep this hobby affordable so that these games can get into gamers hands and not collectors.
The more time goes on, the less I see much of a difference between sealed collectors and people who collect thousands of games. Both are extreme behaviors. And the zealot like disposition both sides take (in different ways) is very off putting. “CRTs are the BEST way to play retro games” “You REAL way to play is on original hardware”. It’s all off putting.
Truthfully, I think the “regular” game collecting scene could learn a lot about cringe behavior from sealed collectors.
@@leeartlee915 I don’t care who buys what. I want this hobby affordable and the speculators have ruined the hobby. I teach high school and one of my students want to get into retro games. I said good luck kid. Stick to emulation.
@@leeartlee915 My question is, since you seen to not care for the collectors who amass thousands of games, why do you watch this channel when Pat has so many and it goes against what youre about?
@@joeyisabsb1 Because I still love games, duh. I’ve been watching Pat for years and I appreciate what he has to say about the hobby in general. Does that mean I need to agree with every single thing he does? Of course not.
@@philipcohen7192 You say that like it’s a bad thing. Emulation is a) cheaper (always has been) b) has a much lower barrier for entry c) doesn’t require you to spend countless hours trolling yard sales, Goodwills, and the internet for “deals”. In fact, that’s exactly the kind of talk that has made me completely turned off to the physical collectors.
Edit: And emulation is not the only route people need to take. Look at someone like Metal Jesus Rocks. He has that whole basement full of games but what does he do? He uses ODEs and Flashcarts because they are more convenient. The whole thing is absurd.
Aw man, I wanted to hear that Amiico story 😢
2 things:
1. Re: "sealed games being new" and your response. Does this person not realize that sealed comic collecting was around for 50+ years when investors started pushing them as portfolio investments.
2. The main reason I will never trust WATA (which isn't a problem anyway, I think sealed game collecting is odd unless you are trying to build a display) is the guy involved who was run out of the coin community (by the government) because he did the same damn thing there in the 80s. Pawn Star's shop started as a coin store before they could get their pawn license and the owner knew this guy. There is way too much conflict of interest going on to trust them.
I don't care if people speculate but don't fix the market and prepare to eat your losses. It comes with the territory of sitting on things with no intrinsic value.
The saddest part to me is how these people are determined to not be seen as speculators. They want to be called collectors so bad. But I always thought people collected stuff just to own it, not bc it was potentially going to sell for lots more (and this goes for collecting expensive stuff too. There’s that guy who has his whole house filled with Star Wars props and he clearly is just a collector)
What's funny is that you can be a collector as well as a speculator. Just gotta keep in mind that prices can and will dip as well as skyrocket. Right now what we are seeing are people who don't want to come to terms with taking a very large L on what they should have known was a bubble market.
When sealed game prices were at an all time high, everyone was living high off of their fumes and hoping the price would climb higher instead of selling some and taking profit like they were supposed to. You see the EXACT same thing in the stock market.
Idk. I think the saddest part might be the way in which these speculators tried to leap frog right over the actual video game collecting community. They continue to try and pretend that the people who have been collecting for decades either don't exist or don't understand the hobby. It's a frustrating form of gaslighting.
@@FeIixDragon oh yeah it definitely is. They can’t help but put down people who don’t leave their games in plastic wrapping 😂. It’s almost like we are creating more affordable copies for the resale market that aren’t dumb enough to care about plastic wrapping 😭
@@FeIixDragon Basically. These people are manipulative sociopaths that thought they could make some money off of people who are passionate about videogames and collecting them. But they got greedy, we saw through them, and now they're trying to take out their frustrations on their targets (individuals like Pat and the community as a whole) with deceptive videos full of blatant lies, such as the one from "mad dawg"
@@dissraps wellp your first mistake was "Hoping" to make a video game purchase profitable in the modern gaming market, those collector's editions are cheap to make and usually plastic, but made official for FANS of the franchise. These BARELY, if ever sell for more than they're worth, as they should, most of these collectors editions get broken up into individual figurine/ bust/ steelbook case sales or whatever the case may be, but even then the profit is not worth even the time taken to pre-order the damn thing.
You're a consumer, if you want profit, be an entrepreneur. Seems a lot of these speculators got things twisted.
Wonder what this investor's reaction would have been if Pat switched into podcast promo mode and was like "Sure! You can be on the podcast! Feel free to leave us an under 20 second voice message at..." etc.
A voice from the other side goes, "Hey, it's Cousin Tony. That Chinese guy and Tommy are peddling sealed and graded RFID cards."
The sealed community, the stadia community, the fake retro themed game console community, etc. Pat and Ian take them all on.
Souljaboy breathes a sigh of relief
Kinda crazy to see these people not take the loss straight up. Imagine being a bag holder on games you don't care about, lol
I've seen Pat like 50 times by now, only talked to a few times quickly. He is exactly how he says he is, he is always nice and willing to talk to anyone, and you can tell he is engaged and focused, and cares about learning and being friendly. Whenever I see the sealed collectors table or grading people they are always alone. Empty booths/no customers, small groups of people who look like they are not having fun. And have no real friends to talk too.
I get it, it sucks. You lost money. Gotta take it on the chin and move on. Do the right thing and keep your dignity intact. I am very thankful that I do not think like these money hungry people and do my best to live a humble life. Love the podcast, guys! I appreciate you both very much.
Best thing to do is invest in things you like. That way even if the value of your investment goes down, you'll have something you like...at least. Goes to show these "investors" don't really care about games...if they cared, they would just be happy to have them.
@@bretton_woods agree 100%. Its interesting to know that my games have gone up in value over the years but at the end of the day, no matter what happens to the prices, I will ALWAYS be able to play my games and enjoy them how they are supposed to be enjoyed.

Is The Mad Dog the basement dweller who wears a Doctor Doom mask?
@@heisensaul5538 Pat did a video called "Video Game Collector Lies About Me" and Karl Jobst also did one about video game collecting. Not sure what Mad Dog does otherwise.
@@Rahhelthethird must not be the same guy then. There was a guy who was like REALLY REALLY pro-amico who wears this stupid Dr. Doom mask.
I love buying sealed games and opening them. I almost regret not filming all of them. I've opened a dozen sealed ps2, xbox and Xbox 360 games. Also sealed Genesis games. With a disc game that's not blu ray used often has bad scratches.
I don't understand why these people didn't sell near the top unless they bought the top. The number doesn't always go up. That applies to any investment.
I don’t get yelling at people you don’t know for pretty much any reason.
"Nostalgic Investments" ... You've got to be kidding me with that name. I want to vomit so hard.
I remember when i was a kid i used to collect coins, i never bought one just collected the ones that seemed rare and were given to me or if i found one somwhere or if the change that was given to me contained a rare version of a common coin. I found it fascinating like the quarters that had the bicentennial figure on the back instead of the eagle, or the penny that had a "one cent" in the back. All these things made me want to find and collect these coins.
My point is, i was passionate about it and never about the money, never thought about selling them. I wanted to collect as my personal hobby. Otherwise how can you be called a collector when your sole purpose is to re-sell? So those auction guys that are raising prices should straight out be called re-sellers not collectors because thats their goal. I could understand if they had multiple copies of a game and they want to sell those extra copies, but their intention is not collecting. They most likely have no attachment for a game either played or displayed.
Lastly as an example if somebody came up to me and said hey sell me your coin collection i would say no. But then lets say he wanted it so much that he started offering me large sums of money and then more and more to the point i say ok. That does not mean all similar coins are automatically valued at the price i sold them, it just means that person really wanted them that was willing to offer large amounts and i was willing to part with them. But for all we know all those coins in that collection could probably be acquired for a fraction of whatever money i was paid. And if you are greedy and sneaky and wanted to make as much money as possible from selling coins you will use that example to tell others hey coins are worth so and so i saw them sell for that amount, while swaying mentality for your personal gain which has nothing to do with collecting.
I collected coins as a kid, too. Back then you could still occasionally find a wheat cent (1909-1958) in change. Good times!
@@lo1bo2 I collected videogames for a while but found that only the ones i played as a kid provided me with real satisfaction vs owning items i never even heard of but thats just me.
It is possible for a 70% drop to be a correction (in certain assets), however it does not apply in this particular situation since the legitimacy of the peak price sales were very questionable to begin with.
It's coming in full circle no matter what items people will tried to flipped it 💯 percent of the time and make their profit higher. Look at the Adult Happy Meals toys their going for 300k depending on the toys on ebay. People need to stop and think before getting into the market. It'll rise and fall again.
Yep, going to crash again
I feel like I don't give a crap if people wanna speculate on sealed games. Go for it! I genuinely wish you the best. The issue is the colluding, fraud, childishness, feet stamping etc. Mostly the first two lol
tbh Childishness (tantrum throwing and feet stomping go with that), along with pettiness and gate keeping are why I wouldn't want to get into retro game collecting as a hobby. I feel like there are too many idiots out there like Pat described who are just getting into this hobby b/c they feel it can make them money as opposed to actually liking retro games. If it wasn't for the fools getting into this who know nothing about video game history, this would be an amazing hobby to get into.
Gotta be honest. Love that y’all are fighting the good fight. It’s disgusting what this hobby has turned into.
We need a mortal kombat thumbnail when it is pat/Ian vs someone.
I have a few seal games. But no plans to sell it. I just don't want to open the collectors editions that I have. As to me I enjoy the box art that most of these have. But would never by the sealed graded stuff.
Shao Khan: FIGHT!
Honestly these SEALED graded game collectors knew they were playing in a speculative manipulated market. Those bubbles ALWAYS burst! And spectacularly! They, this guy included, should have seen that coming.
And honestly, they are reaping what they sow at this point, for manipulating a market and driving up prices artificially.
We get so much more from the CU podcast then we ever did from the new Intelevision
I'm back after not having a phone for 3 weeks. I'm glad to hear your voice again guys!! Missed ya!
The artist Seal loves games that are...Sealed.
Hey Pat, I don't think it's right that you attacked me in this video even though you didn't 😢💔
Sealed games market is pure speculation and very poisonous for true passionate collectors
Hey Pat, I've held onto a US Chrono Trigger CIB for awhile and was recently told it's one of the nicest copies my local shop had ever seen - to the extent they told me they were surprised I had not got it graded yet. I have always hesitated to bother because of your advice (and my own similar thoughts) but, I would like to sell this as I could use the $ - Where would you sell it? I'm assuming you would not bother grading either haha
If you want the most $$$, list it on ebay as a 30 day auction. If you need to sell quickly, mercari also has an active marketplace.
@@jonriede6846 thanks for the info, I have not tried Mercari but will look! I checked eBay and it's wild... I see people selling some of the wata/graded stuff for a lot and my copy looks nicer than theirs.... but Pat says grading is shit? Very confusing lol
I love you Pat, you did a great job shutting those boot lickers down.
Ian - we have a family rule that dad (that's me) gets the pizza slices with the big bubbles. They are delicious for no reason. ;)
Didn't some rando confront you about how you and Ian wished Stadia into oblivion? 🤣
Pat, the the thumbnail for this video needs to be on a tee shirt, hahaha!
Ian didn't get to tell his story!

The thumbnail wins the internet. I would've also accepted a picture of Pat the Nes Punk with the world's greatest Navy Seal Jesse The Body Ventura

Investors/Speculators and gamblers should follow the same rule; never put in more money than you are willing to lose.

Oh man. I love Chris Plettuce.
I have expensive comics, I have them for me. Has there been situations where life has forced me to sell large portions and expensive issues for cash to pay my bills? Yes and ngl it's good to have that to lean on, but I'd rather it not happened at all and I still have the books. That's the difference between a collector and investor.
Yes. I had all the deluxe Voltron toys (Vehicle, Lion, Gladiator) and held them unopened and stored for about 20 years. Would glance at the boxes and peek into the windows. Put them back in storage Collector/Fan/reliving childhood. I bought all the available Furbys from Wal-Mart and flipped them on eBay an hour later. Investor

I've amassed a large collection over the last 13 years with 3,500 games and 50% of my collection being NES, SNES, and N64 loose, CIB, and Sealed (along with 100+ consoles and handhelds). I have 70+ sealed games and I've never graded a game and don't plan to. I didn't start collecting as an investment. I started it because it's what I remembered from my childhood. Sure the value now is amazing, but I still don't collect based on value. I knew the graded game collectors were going to be left holding the bag... Anybody with any common sense in the hobby knew that. These people you speak of act like they are collectors when in reality they are no better than market manipulators and speculators. They don't care about collecting, the hobby, or video games in general....They'd grade a bag of mulch if they could then sell it for a profit.
I don't feel sorry for a single one of them... They tried to turn a hobby into their personal piggy bank and it didn't work out... Go back to cards and comics... From what I see there are still plenty of money bags over there paying stupid prices for stuff.
I don’t get owning that much of anything. If you have a collection that big, you must literally have to dedicate a significant amount of space to just house your games. Truth be told, I think people who acquire that many games are no different than people who own 500 pairs of Nikes: it’s materialism gone unchecked.
@@leeartlee915 Studies have shown collecting is good for both your mental and physical health and is a way to reduce stress. Obsession with collecting is when it starts to become a negative trait and you collect just to put it in a room or a closet. A big difference being collectors display their collection proudly and care about how they look when others come over so they can show it off. Hoarders don't care about such things and will just put their items in a spot just to fill the space they have, not caring how it displays.
I personally never want more than 1k games in my lifetime because my collection was made up of games I can take the time to play and not take up too much room in my home.
That being said I would love to visit a home that has thousands of games proudly displayed and would love to hear about the history of it all. I would not want to visit a house where I'm stepping over boxes of games where everything is scattered over the floor and nothing is set up.
@@joeyisabsb1 I would love to read that study as it sounds like nonsense. Obsessive behavior is rarely a positive thing for mental health. And I’m not talking about just hoarders, which is a different type of mental illness altogether.

Games are meant to be played. Sure it’s nice that they also can act as an investment for a rainy day if you need to sell off your collection, but these were created to be enjoyed. I actually wouldn’t pay a penny more for a sealed game than I would for a clean copy of a complete in box open game. Because I know I would just open it, and play it, the way games are meant to be enjoyed. This whole phenomenon is bizarre to me. Good on you Pay for calling this out as BS. Don’t let up. a couple sealed copies of classic games being kept in a vault or museum somewhere makes sense, otherwise its a complete joke to me. games are meant to be played and enjoyed not to sit on a shelf and gather dust. i feel the same way about books, movies and records, nothing wrong with collecting them, but they shouldn't be sealed away never to be touched.
don't these "collectors" have anything better to do? like buying more common games and claiming they will be worth millions
Bag holders mad at Pat for pointing out they’re bag holders. This happens a lot in the world of “non-traditional investments”. They try to outsmart the smart money by trying to bet on what they perceive as the faster horse then wonder what happened when they get fleeced.

And the excuse is always, ALWAYS one of being intentionally obtuse. Always.
Personally I collect sealed games that I enjoy (No intention on ever selling them), but when it comes to people doing this for money and especially with the shady stuff with WATA it taints the gaming collecting market.
I have to say it makes me really sad, because I had such great memories of the old and television. I even met one of the original designers before he passed away when they were starting to work on the intellivision disc for the PS2 and then a little later for the plug-and-play that they had. It just makes me sick to think how this new company is taking a pretty good name plate and has been dragging it through the mud for years
I wonder how Ian would feel if one of us assaulted one of Tommy's little shits in front of him after they harassed him?
Can I be a sealed game collector that isn't a speculator? These Wata flippers are frustrating but there are a few folks that genuinely enjoy sealed and graded games.
He sounds soft af 😂
Didn't some weirdo try this a year ago?
There’s always option 3
The way I see it, speculators are getting what they deserve for trying to wreck the hobby. It was a gamble all along...but if you tell them that, somehow you are the bad guy.
From the title of the video I thought you both got into a fight. For some reason I'm imagining you hitting each other with sealed games like a wrestling match 🤣 It sucks you gotta deal with people like that in everyday life though, but I admire you for taking the high road Pat. I know it's not always easy to do that.
Didn't air as of this comment, but...I bet it's gonna be a funny story.
SEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL-DAH!
There's nothing wrong with sealed games, just the pricing. Buy a version with a box and a shrink wrap machine.
a super mario selling for 1M$ is stupid. It just makes the real game collectors look bad probly on purpose . as if its some kind of meaningless joke. They are inflating the prices to cash in like a ponzy scheme . You are doing the right thing.
Sealed Game Collecting for investment is the biggest sham
If they're going to make an investment nothing wrong with it. But if you need to manipulate a market to make that investment pay off well then that's not a good investment. I seem to remember a point in time where tickle me Elmo was a great short term investment. But it's not paying any dividends in 2022. I just don't understand why you would want to buy a sealed game that you can never play for a million dollars. If you got a million bucks laying around by a business or buy a rental property buy a duplex invest in something that is actually going to be worth something. Possibly generate passive income and if you don't want to deal with it anymore sell it for a profit. I think these idiots should invest in pogs. I hear the baseball cards from the late '80s are really appreciating a value right now maybe they should get in on it before it's too late.
Pat is just mad he wasn't on the sealed train
You got it! someone that actually understands what Pat's real agenda is. Bravo
