I’ve been told sax 🎷 nor horns belongs in blues. What about B.B. King oh Albert Collins? I love the horn section. My father comes from the era of swing, so it’s imbedded into my soul. Love your CZcams channel, bud.

Thank you, No maybe what they mean is some horn players don't belong. I use to play for Collins BTW.

Derrick....man great tone and great licks. You obviously understand the theory behind what you do and i dig the way you teach it.
I am schooled and play alot and read and can find tons of answers in books and stuff. But man just to see and hear you even teach this stuff even for me is SUPER enlightening. Its the stuff you cant get out of books...."After you play that for 30minutes..." LOL that is legit though you really got to live with the sound of those licks not just play them.
Thank you man from a very grateful educator.

I'm definitely bookmarking this video! What an amazing experience it was to listen to how you explained your construction of your solo. I really appreciate the easy-going style you have. I especially appreciate the way you weave your explanations in amongst your demonstrations, showing the fingering of the notes you're playing, too. I actually listened a few times and seemed to get more and more out of what you were saying, the more times I listened. Thank you so much for posting this. You're a very inspiring teacher. If you have time, I would love to see a video of how you bend notes because I notice that you don't pinch to make notes sharper.

Good solid stuff a man can use...I like the be-bop scale over dominant chords. Using both maj. and min. 7ths, that symmetrical, 8-note scale, smooths out melodic lines. I got a few performance vids on the Tube...stop by sometimes.

Great video. Love your teaching style - feels very personal and keeps things simple. Thanks for showing me the b5 entry into the IV chord and for stopping me trying to rush too much ( play with the lick for an hour ). I like that your lick isn't using the blues scale, so it sounds fresh. It seems like the blues scale of the relative minor ( F#) without the D. I also play a Conn Underslung. Mine is 1939 vintage - a year newer than yours ! Please make more alto vids. Thanks

It's mostly a matter of practicing on your tone. Cavity, tongue and Larynx are the tools you have to master for achieving a nice and open tone in your sound. Try to exercise these parts for example with Sigurd Raschers' book. Very helpful for that. But as usual, takes a lot of practicing and patience.

The ALTO(not Tenor) sax is pitched in Eb. That means when he hits an Eb he is playing a "Concert" C. Three steps(keys, frets) down. On a Tenor sax or trumpet playing a C will yield a "Concert" Bb. Hard to fathom for a guitar or piano player pitched in C.
