  • This footage documents the surrender of the Type IX C/40 "Unterseeboot" or "U-Boot" 805 off of the coast of New Hampshire on May 15, 1945. While commissioned in 1941, U-805 did not see any combat patrols until March 1945. It was ordered to surrender at the nearest Allied port at the conclusion of the war in Europe. You will see both US Navy and US Coast Guard personnel as well as sailors of the "Kriegsmarine" who have been taken prisoner. (Note the personnel guarding the German sailors with Reising SMGs.)
USS Ensemore (YTB-217) - a harbor tug boat - features prominently, moving German PWs from the submarine to a larger US vessel. If you are a naval history buff, please comment below on the IDs of the other vessels involved.
