Which is the Best (Official) Version of Super Mario Bros. 3?

- So you may have just learned that now the Nintendo Switch has GBA games as a part of their Online Expansion Pack, and in that small few they've released so far, there's one that is barely even an original GBA game, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3.
It's a 2003 GBA version of, one of, if not the greatest 2D platforming game ever made. Obviously you gotta love the first 2 Super Mario Bros. games but- c'mon, Mario 3 is where its at.
And this game looks and plays excellently on the Switch, leaving some to argue that this might just be the best way to currently play Super Mario Bros. 3. Saving of course crazy ROM Hacks and fan projects.
But, personally, I'm not too sure about that.
Currently on the Switch Online service, there are three ways to play Super Mario Bros. 3.
Through the NES games, the ability to play the original 8-bit Super Mario Bros 3.
Through the SNES games, there's Super Mario All-Stars, which contains a remade 16-bit Super Mario Bros. 3
And now, through GBA games, Mario Advance 4. - Hry
Fun fact: switch online uses the GameBoy Player version of super Mario advance 4 which has rumble and uses the original SNES colors. If you played this game on an original gba, the colors would be lighter
I was wondering why it didn't have quite the washed out colour pallet I remembered from the GBA release. Thanks for this detail! Much appreciated.
@@anotherblowncartridge
The typically washed out colors are optimized for the non backlit GBA to offset for the lack of color differences on such a screen. They’re some sort of a color filter that you should filter back in a typical GBA game.
GBA/SNES color palette is damn near perfect.
Couldn't agree more.
@@anotherblowncartridge The world E levels on SMA4 are in my opinion some of the best 2D Mario levels ever made. So much creativity
My favorite version of SMB3 is the NES version because I really like its artstyle and it has the best physics out of the three versions, and this version of the game feels the most replayable to me. It's also the most challenging version of the game which I like. My least favorite version is probably the All Stars version mainly because Mario in that version looks very off without gloves, and that version has a few typos in it. The physics in that version also feel a little sluggish compared to the other versions.
I don't know if I get any of the sluggishness, but the absence of gloves is certainly an issue.
I agree except the physics part. Sma4smb3 is better.
@@mohamedaminekhadhraoui6417 For me, the physics in the NES version make the movement feel more fun and satisfying because of how heavier Mario feels and the amount of friction in his movement. In the GBA version, he feels a lot lighter to control which isn't a bad thing, but it makes his movement feel a lot less satisfying when running through levels imo.
This is the hard hitting journalism I come to this channel for.
I try to basically try to emulate a big TV news channel. Hard facts. Ads for Cialis. Anderson Cooper. It's all here.
I have a special place for all the Super Mario Advanced games.
I had SMB2, SMB3, and World, and it was my introduction to Mario!!!
As a kid, I loved the voice acting, and I have no idea why my little brain found it so amusing.
My little brain still finds the voice acting amusing!
WORLD-e was in the Wii U Virtual Console edition of Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3
I wasnt aware of that! Thanks for letting me know
its crazy no one on youtube has ever done a full super mario all stars vs. super mario advance series comparison video
I remember how big a deal Super Mario Bros 3 was when it was originally released 30+ years ago (Jesus I'm old, lol).
I grew up playing all of these as a kid. I still carry the GBA with SMA4 for nostalgia. But it's been so long playing the console versions of the game itself. I can't even remember when I last played the All Stars version of SMB3. But regardless, it's such a classic 2D game. Great content, btw. You earned another subscriber in me. Keep up the awesome content. 👏🏻
Wow, thank you for the wonderful comment. I grew up exclusively with the NES game in early childhood, but I've really taken to all versions and all their unique aspects.
@@anotherblowncartridge You're very welcome. 😁
which version do you like the most?
@@happyhippo1 I like all of them, but the one that stands out the most is the nes version. That's what helped grew my love for mario-based games.
As a certified Luigi nerd, I really enjoy the GBA version the best!
Though I get why someone might prefer the others, be it the classic feel of the NES or the better field of view on the SNES
Either way, it's great to have all of them available, here's hoping Super Mario Bros. Deluxe gets the same treatment
Luigi really is in top form on GBA. I cant blame anyone for liking any version the best.
I know right! and the e reader levels are all here too!
The GBA versions of these games also have easier gameplay, which I like for more casual playthroughs.
Each version of Super Mario Bros. 3 immediately following the NES version is a marked improvement in terms of graphics, and in Super Mario Advance 4's case, additional levels...
Agreed on graphics. What gorgeous upgrades they've made for such a brilliant game.
Disagree. The original has the best graphics.
@@thomasffrench3639nope
@@nomo4u886 disagree
The originals gameplay is the best
It really bothered me for some reason how Mario and Luigi didn't have gloves in the snes version, but they added this in the gba version. Gba version also does several cool touch ups like the dust effects from changing directions also applies to sliding down slopes too. And the E reader levels, especially the smb1 remakes use a gba-ified remix of the SNES smb1 theme. Which is cool and makes it slightly easier to make a mario advance 5, lol.
I want to like the All Stars version but because of the added X and Y buttons, Nintendo decided to mess up the action buttons. I like the GBA version the best because it has the update graphics from the SNES version but only has A and B buttons meaning that the actions are returned to the NES button layout which I like a lot better
I've always, for whatever reason, been fine with X as run and A as jump, or Y as run, and B as jump. But to each their own!
You know it lets you swap the layout in All Stars when you pick the file, right?
You realize that the NES buttons work better as Y and B, right?
@@thomasffrench3639nah bruh the diagonal run and jump button feeling is way better than the buttons being side to side
@@dripp_dropp What I meant is that the NES controller transfers to Y and B better than A and B.
The GBA version on the switch hands down might be my favorite version to play the game for sure.
My favorite video game. Sure there are better narratives and graphics out there today, but the secrets, creative ideas, challenges, and many power ups make it the most repayable and enjoyable experience for me to go back to
Does it- CAN it get any better than Mario 3? Especially when it comes to gameplay and design? I don't know.
@@anotherblowncartridgeCeleste easily clears it imo but i absolutely adore SMB3, still a phenomenal game
I really enjoyed Mario 3. Thanks for this video. I'm also a new subscriber. ❤
Thanks, much appreciated!
@@anotherblowncartridge your very welcome
My recommendations are as follows:
Famicom: One of only two ways to play with original difficulty (getting hit with a secondary powerup reduces you to small Mario) and 8-bit graphics and sound.
NES: 8-bit graphics and sound in English
SNES: World (but not level) select, updated graphics without screen crunch
Super Mario Advance 4 (GBA): Original hardware, world and level select, e-reader card effects (harder than Famicom difficulty in some ways but easier in others, SMB2 vegetables in levels, different Luigi physics, P bar halved, slower timer, 1-ups replaced with 3-ups, coins from defeated enemies like SMW). E-reader powerups like 100-up, boomerang and cape. Cons are screen crunch, worse audio quality and level cards required for e-reader levels , card effects and powerups (unless you use an emulator to scan them).
Super Mario Advance 4 (Wii U/Switch): All e-reader levels unlocked but no e-reader card effects or powerups.
The GBA version is the one I recommend because of the extra content (assuming you have some way to unlock them), as well as the quick save feature which allows you to quit and return to the same point at any time.
That said, the NES version is still pretty friendly with unlimited continues, lack of a save feature aside. Mario 3 was never a brutally punishing game to begin with, and the remakes don't really change much about that, so a begginer can still play the original version without worrying that the game is gonna set them back too much.
Any version of this game is a fine way to play it.
I just can't really give NES games without a save feature or a password system a pass. Even with unlimited continues, you're going to have to get up from the couch eventually and leaving the system on all weekend was never a good idea.
My first game that I ever owned. Super Mario Bros 3 is the platformer that I judge all other platformers against. Played the heck out of it on my GBA SP growing up, and my cartridge is still working.
I love the world 4 map music on GBA
It does have a great sound to it.
What is the song in the ending?????
Mario 3 is goated. I own all three versions and love each one.
Truly GOATed
I have a bigger nostalgia for the snes version thx to fangames like smbx, but i still prefer the GBA version cause of the extra levels and Luigi.
Honestly
why argue
let's play all 3 XD.
Was the GBA version of SMB3 ever ported for Switch? That’s gotta be my favorite version of it by a mile.
Yeah it's on the GBA Switch Online emulator.
The best way to play is with an NES, the original and a CRT TV. That last thing is the most important.
Been replaying Mario64 recently and games designed for old televisions just look, feel and sound much better the way they were meant to be played
In my opinion, because it's what I grew up with, GBA wins. All are great, but that one holds a special place in my heart. Plus, the end credit song is amazing if you complete all levels.
I like advance 4 the best for Mario 3! I have an NES and we bought Mario 3 from 2nd & Charles last year, but the game didn't work, so we returned it. In 2016, we bought Mario all stars for the Wii in Toys R us! This is how I first experienced the first 3 (4 if you count lost levels) Mario games! I remember 3 being my favorite of the bunch! Than my dad found his SNES (which surprisingly wasn't yellowed) and that's where I played Mario world! I was hooked! I was literally 7 and playing Mario world. I remember I spent a long time going to the top secret area and just getting 100 lives! I keep forgetting that I can go to my basement whenever i want to play these games, which is now leading me to buy Mario advance 4 for my DS Lite!
Original sound is the best, but added voices is awesome, updated background is best, original Mario is best but updated Luigi is awesome. Like the new ability to save. Like the new levels. Like it being portable.
Overall I like the original the best.
That’s a lot of Mario 3
It's still not enough 😤
I love advance 4. Nice to play on small screen.
best experience I had was playing the original on a PSP with an amazing NES emulator that not only with a tap of a button allowed us to change the screen from wide, to 4:3, mirrored, etc, it also had a render extend feature where the parts of the level on the sides of the screen wouldn't pop in on the edges like they usually do. I think it also had a rewind button which was, well cheating, but cool too lol
Emulating games on a PSP was, and remains, a truly magical experience.
Mario Bros 3 was the first game i have ever played on the nes i remember as a kid getting the nes for Christmas me and my brothers and it came with Mario Bros 3 me my Brothers would fight over who wanted to play as Mario nobody wanted to play as Luigi only Mario
Poor Luigi! But still, awesome story! I remember getting Mario Sunshine and a gamecube for Christmas too. Good memories.
In All-Stars though, WHERE ARE THEIR GLOVES!?
All-Stars just had that uh... firmer grip, on players.
@@anotherblowncartridge Firmer...grip..?

i wish you actually talked about the differences between all stars other than it just looks different. we can all see what it looks like
That's fair. I'll do more gameplay nuances and historical differences the next time I do this. Maybe for Super Mario Bros. 2...
I just 100% the E world a few months ago
Which one’s the best? They all are
*round of applause*
I got the SNES version. From all stars.
SNES and GBA versions are maybe better games but they miss the "WHOA! factor" I always get when I play the NES version. Everytime I play it, I cannot help myself thinking "This is an 8-bit game. How the hell can be an 8 bit game be SO good and SO replayable 35+ years after realease?"... and when you think about it, there aren't that many 35+ year games you truly love playing or replaying for other reasons than nostalgia.
Well said
Can you please do a video on Mario 2???
Not a bad idea! I'll definitely consider it
The advance was the best release with e reader features. This was also the only game Mario could wear the cape and carry a vegetable over his head in the same game. 😜😜😜😜😜
The best version would be a remake using the Mario Maker 2, or 3, engine. I fully believe Nintendo needs to remaster all their old 2D games with MM 2, or a possible 3, to give us the greatest versions ever and would allow the older sounds and music to please everyone
I need cheat codes ( the one"s I'm putting are not working)
I have played the NES version, the GBA version and the All-Stars version of the game and I can honestly say that I prefer the NES version of the game.
I'll never understand why most people seem to prefer the NES versions of the classic Mario games. They look worse, they sound worse, they control a little worse (at least the original and Lost Levels), they don't have save features, etc.
The NES sounds way better than the SNES for these games. These games suffer from the SNES sound chip, which does not mesh well with the style of music Mario games have. It's honestly really unfortunate that the SNES has some of the best game music and some of the absolute worst, along with everything in between. When people understood the sound capabilities, you could come up with amazing work, but that was not many composers. The NES has far more quality game OSTs compared to the SNES.
It’s not that people prefer them because they’re better versions just that they have more of a connection with that version if it was the first one they played. But also some of the things you’ve mentioned are just opinion not fact. Just because you think they look and sound better does not make it definitively true. In fact the only thing you listed that could be solidly argued to be an objective improvement is the addition of save features but even then some would argue that they prefer the challenge of having to complete the originals in one go. So it is not as cut and dry as you think.
For me I prefer the GBA version of super Mario bros 3 it’s so much better than the other 2 versions of Super Mario Bros 3
NES any day
Like I said, cant blame you
I like super Mario bros 3
Same :)
Because it is fun to play it on the Nintendo entertainment system
@@jamesalvarado6208 It is indeed fun to play on the Nintendo Entertainment System. And the Super Nintendo Entertainment System!
Nes version is a masterpiece.
It really is! Every version is a masterpiece!
Luigi nerd very happy
The flutter jump just doesnt disappoint
Wii u had the eReader levels
This is true
original NES version
Definitely the NES original for me as the SNES and GBA versions feel totally downgraded sound wise plus the airships in those versions are seriously boring due to all being the same colour, whereas the NES has different coloured ones which is a nice touch
None of the gba versions are worth it to me because they all have way crappier sound quality. This is coming from someone who was only 7 or 8 when I had all of them for gba, while also getting a hand me down SNES years before that and growing up with the All-Stars versions. All-Stars is the best imo.
GBA sound quality is definitely not the best aha
I play the GBA version
And for me it's the best
Advance 4 is a brilliant version!
Why wasn’t super Mario bros on the GBA?
Technically you could play Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on a GBA and play it like that. Or maybe there was a GBA NES-themed re-release port?
Mario bros 1 and 2 are just the same game with 2 just being a harder version
Yeah, the original versions, anyway. In the west, Super Mario Bros. 2 is a very different game. Even then, Super Mario Bros. 2 (or The Lost Levels) is, while similar, more than just a difficulty spike.
NES
Gotta love the original!
Luigi is better than Mario. I am not a nerd 😂
GBA is the definitive version
Doesn't answer the question in the title. >_
I believe I did declare that I find SNES to be the best version
If I were to rank then all it would go
1) GBA
2) NES
3) All Stars
The NES version has the better player physics and (imo) better presentation. Both 16bit versions made some changes I don't like, for example they standardized the unique red and orange fire flower design that was in the original, and standardized a lot of stuff in general. I get it was to have a more consistent brand but what I like about classic Mario games is how unique they all feel from each other and these little changes kinda take that aspect away in some regard. GBA and SNES have the same exact physics (unless you play as Luigi in World E, where he has his own physics) and look almost the same with the only real differences being Luigis unique jump animation, a better Peach sprite, and the addition of gloves on the brothers. All of that considered plus the fact that advance 4 has all that extra content (and theres even more if you use the E Reader cards on the original Japanese release) I feel like objectively its the best option in terms of content, but I do admittedly usually play the nes version more just because it looks and plays better to me.
I hadn't noticed a difference in physics between the games, but now that you mention it, I'm sure it's there. Even just reviewing the gameplay footage I recorded, I can kinda see it. And yeah, that fire flower design is a fair point too.
@@anotherblowncartridge The difference in physics between SMB3 NES and SNES is a myth actually. You can do a google search, but the code's already been decompiled and compared countless times, and Mario 2 and Mario 3 function exactly the same as before. Same with SMB 1 and Lost Levels, except the Nintendo devs missed a minus sign when breaking bricks, which is why Mario goes up through them instead of bouncing off of them like on NES. Aside from that, everything else is the same. It's also why there's an easy to acquire patch for that brick problem on SMB1 All Stars, cause it was such an easy fix.
@@tamerkoh Oh wow! Okay, I'm gonna look into this. Maybe this is a rabbit hole that's gonna end up being another video.
@@tamerkoh I am aware that they're source ports, but I swear theres something off with Mario's controls in SMB3 SNES. Either Im thinking of the GBA Version, there's something weird going on with the way the SNES interprets the code (probably not the case since Mario 1 and 2 control the same), or its some sort of weird "mandell effect" situation because I know other people who've said the same thing. Regardless my ranking is still the same because gloveless mario is wrong haha
Nes
SNES
The gba version is the best
Certainly has the most content!
Navigable 😡😡😡

SNES is the best one by far
