Many speak highly of The Witcher 3 and for good reason. Its takeover of the gaming industry back in 2015 propelled CD Projekt Red to new heights as the gold standard for AAA RPGs. That said, they weren't a mere one hit wonder. The Witcher 2 is often forgotten as fantastic fantasy RPG thanks to its year of release where it went up against Skyrim. As a game I have a ton of nostalgia for, I decided to do a deep dive into The Witcher 2 and see how well it has aged after 11 years.

The Witcher 2 is underrated and it shouldn’t be skipped
My first Witcher game! I remember randomly coming across angry joe’s review and found it looked interesteing so I ordered it from GameStop and watched a walkthrough for the first game while I waited
how is it underrated ?
It’s only underrated by those who aren’t Witcher fans!
@@rebelwithoutaclue9387 well most people know the Witcher 3 is what he’s trying to say nobody thinks of the Witcher and is instantly brought to the 2nd game in mind
@@sgt.pepper1227 well its because the game was a PC exclusive for a long time until it got port on XBOX so it wasn't as accessible as Witcher 3
I really liked Witcher 2's branching story, you'd think by now other RPGs would've worked on bigger branching paths, but I haven't seen something on the level of this 11-year-old game, let alone bigger.
2 is my favorite! I love Iorweth 💘
So disappointed he was not in 3.
@@Shawn_Raz_87they have choices but the games are shit bro
the witcher 2 VS skyrim
the witcher 3 VS fallout 4
and now cyberpunk 2077: phantom liberty VS starfield??
in the future it may be the witcher 4 VS the elder scrolls 6
Played the entire Witcher series for the first time over the last year and a half. All three are excellent. Looking forward to replaying them all in a few years.
which one did you like the best ?
@@danielio2961 Liked 3 the most overall, but I loved the atmosphere of the first game.
Try reading the books or listening to the audiobooks before that, they add sooooo much to the story, listening to the characters talking about the events you read about is a great feeling
@@scotts1912 TW2 is made with "replayability" in mind. When you replay the game, try changing the end of chapter 1. If you followed Iorveth, go with Roche this time and vice-versa.
It's the only way to actually understand the entire story of the game.
When I started chapter 2 on my second playthrough I couldn't believe how much the story was different this time.
@@scotts1912 I feel this way too I think the first game has some kind of irreplaceable atmosphere I don't know how they made the world feel so magical. This is also a very common sentiment among fans who play the first game
The Flotsam lynching is one of my favorite moments in video games. It really illuminates the irony of witchers being created to protect humanity from monsters, when in actuality the humans are the real monsters.
Also the romance scene with Triss is iconic. I'm amazed at the impact on the rest of the game from choosing between Roche or Iorveth (I'm still bummed that Iorveth was cut from Witcher 3).
They carry two swords. It's said one's for monsters, the other is for people. If you ask Geralt of Rivia he'll tell you they're both for monsters.
@@jwisemanm it is said that geralt carries a third sword if you know what i mean 😏
I played it 4 summers in a row. One of my favorite games. Something about the atmosphere and various locations is just perfect, and does indeed have a major summer vibe.
I'm playing The Witcher 1 for the first time, and I have to say, the graphical improvements from 1 to 2, and 2 to 3, is massive.
The atmosphere in all of them is equally great though.
Yeah Witcher 1 is definitely dated in almost every aspect but the story is just so good. TW2 is a nice hybrid and a better entry point into TW3.
It took me three attempts to get into this game but when I finally did get into it I was blown away. Easily one of the best narrative games I’ve played. Now to go play this again for the elusive last dice game related achievement. Thanks for the video Matty!
I love this game it still holds up. The only bad thing about it that I don't like is that some of the maps are kinda hard to figure out on where you need to go especially vergen I think it's name was.
Yeah that's true, Vergen was awful to navigate
With all of the Lord of the rings hype going around, I think it would be nice to see you replay Shadow of Mordor/War.
I played this last year before playing 3 for the first time and was shocked with how well it aged. This was my introduction to the witcher game series last year and I adored it. Though i must say, the most enjoyment I had from these games is certainly the Blood & Wine expansion for 3
Hey Matty, haven't watched much of your stuff consistently for a few years but I was around way back when, good to see your videos are still high quality and you're getting good views, hope you're doing well homie.
I freaking love this channel man
I had the same experience, I got it for pretty cheap a little while after it came out and I was totally blown away. One of my favorite games from the 360 generation.
I absolutely love The Witcher 2. I played it years after 3, but I have to say, it gives TW3 a run as far as how freaking good it is. Combat is much more challenging in 2; you pretty much HAVE to be using potions and decoctions to make it through some of the tougher encounters. I was stuck in a damn Drowner cave for over an hour in the early game just getting mobbed by low level enemies and dying over and over until I really embraced the boosts. I like the claustrophobic feel of the woods areas and even like the more linear nature of it. All around a fantastic game that still holds up really well.
It's a great game, but the witcher 3 is a damn masterpiece.
I remember dying more than a dozen times in TW2 too. LoL I thought I just sucked until Kevin Vanorg was complaining about dying alot in TW2 in his Witcher 3 discussions video
This game helped me so much in early sobriety when it came out on the switch. Thank you Geralt.
W
This game never came out on the switch
Played the game recently for the first time, and despite it's age it holds up really well, but if you really want to bump up the texture fidelity, the Nexus has several 4k upscaled texture packs available and let me tell you, it's all the game needed, the game holds up really well, and with that addition is almost like playing The Witcher 3.
Bro my Witcher 2 got stuck in an infinite Loop and I can’t progress😭😭😭
@@revan5293 If you're using the "AI Upscale Textures" mod in the Nexus, check the description, there's a few modifications you need to do to some .ini files to avoid infinite loading and crashing. Cheers!
Have you tried Ubersampling? Lol I have a 6800XT and I still can’t run that setting at a decent consistent framerate. Everything else on ultra is fine easy 144fps locked… but if you turn on ubersampling … crash and burn
@@TnerB91 I just have the normal Witcher 2
Thank you Matty!! I was debating picking this up recently (never played it yet) ... now I will! Also good on you for not editing out the melee struggles early on, we're all human. Keep being cool my dude!
Fire video as always Matty
Loving this series Matty 👍🏻
I prefer the more linear approach of games like the Witcher 2 and Metro Exodus. The attention to detail in each zone creates a more immersive experience imo.
Agreed. I absolutely love Witcher 3, the various settings are so alive and beautiful, but there's always a sense that you're 'just passing through'. In Flotsam or the military camp in Witcher 2, it feels more like you're visiting a place and taking time to be a part of the area.
I forgot how pleasant it was to talk behind Triss when you get off the boat in Flotsam. There is "animation" and then there is "very sexy walk Animation!"
I replayed it again last year, even better than I remembered since I'm much more familiar with the lore and characters now
I’ll be honest i generally prefer linear games or semi open but not full open world games. Witcher 3’s design is so good that i enjoyed it though
Keep starting and never getting far
I remember reading about the first Witcher game in a magazine before it came out in 2007 - it emphasized choices having consequences. Played right when it came out and loved it.
Witcher 2 was highly anticipated for me - absolutely love it! I usually go with the Iorveth path.
Does the game really completely change on the ivoreth vs roach path?
And if so how early on or late is that choice to make?
@@thedoomslayer5863 Yes it does change completely, merging only at the end
This decision is several hours in but not sure if it’s halfway or less.
While Iorvert is a more interesting character Roche's path had a far stronger writing in both upper Aedirn and Loc Muinne so I recommend going with Roche. But I gotta admit there's one quest I loved in Loc Muinne that's tied to Iorvert path though. The one involving one of Philippa Eilhart's former student wink* wink*
That's the part I got up to when I played it for the first time a few months ago. Think I need to carry on tomorrow thanks to this video. I was really enjoying the game but because I have so many I end up playing a different one each day depending on my mood
I have to say I like the deadpan voice acting style for Geralt, Letho, and the other witchers in this game. Doug Cockle does a great job in Witcher 3 as well but the subdued emotions and near flat delivery in 2 really conveys the effect the mutations had on the witchers.
Definitely preferred this over skyrim. Their lack of rpg systems the further into the Bethesda rpgs you go the more I’ve begun detesting them.
Played it after I finished the Witcher 3. Couldn't get into it, controls felt horrible. Would be great if they remastered it and updated the controls.
But the controls are nearly the same as the Witcher 3's?
Shit dude I played this when it came out and it took me forever to get into it, I've only ever gotten halfway through. I just don't like linear RPGs 🤷♂️ don't feel bad. Meanwhile I'm on my NG+ Death March TW3 playthrough
@@metetural9140 maybe it's the combat. Didn't feel as good as Witcher 3.
I had a similiar experience with this being the first PC game I got when I got my first PC, I tried to get into it a few times, but as somebody who doesn't like playing on KBM and I had no controller, and the game was confusing for me when I was younger, I couldn't get into it.
Fast forward to Witcher 3, I wanted to make sure I had completed W2 before it came out, get all my xbox achievements, and have my save file carry over (the good old days of when save files carry over to sequels right?)
I dived back in, fell in love, couldn't believe the world I had missed out on, and now more mature understood the gameplay elements and design more clearly with it's intent. Did my two play throughs, got all my xbox achievements for the full completion, and finished the day before Witcher 3 came out.
I'll have to replay this one day as well, great to see it again, a classic RPG for me, even if a bit clunky or semi outdated with several mechanics.
Did my first play a year ago and it looked fantastic on Series X. Was a really pleasant surprise the entire way
there's a video that goes over the series X version that really blew my mind about backwards compatibility. It's more of a remaster than most actually paid remasters
It's due to the One X enhancement.
If you like The Wticher, TW2 is absolutely a can't-miss title. This game is super overlooked, and I hate when people recommend to skip straight to the 3rd game. TW2 is a straight 9/10 imo.
2 is actually my favorite out of the trilogy. due mostly to the combat and skills
Same. W3 was too easy but W2 actually took some efforts
Yeah we get it youre special unlike the rest of us congrats
@@Zz0Z79just say you are shit at the game and continue
that beginning combat section is infamous for being weirdly difficult
yup, I've always believed the same thing. The melee combat in 2 is legit better than 3.
was finishers added later on ? i just don't remember them in the game before. they look pretty 😎 cool.
I just beat the Witcher two for the first time earlier this year of 2022!!!
I played and beat the Witcher three on both my PS4 pro and on my Xbox one X, even doing so twice on the oneX side of things being as I have both the standard game with all DLC as well as the GOTY edition but after all that I wanted to go back and see how good the Witcher two was being as it’s backwards compatible on Xbox one..
Ultimately I could see where they made so many advancements to the Witcher three but at the same time the Witcher two is an amazing game!
I have all three but only played the third one. Should I play the first one, or start the second? I only have so much time to play games so don't know if it's worth it.
CDPR was unlike anyone else back then, I remember buying the regular 60 dollar version of this game on release and I got a metal art case, a small art book and a REAL metal oren coin that came in a fancy parchment envelop along with a letter thanking me for buying and choosing cdpr.
Good old days
I played this game a little over a year ago and also struggled on that first combat section haha
I'd be done for a remaster/remake. About to get the plat on ps4. Bring it!
0:18 this image will haunt my dreams. hahahahaha
Holds up pretty well.
I've been playing old games like SR and now Dragon age. This video convince me to play the witcher 2 next. It has been a while and I would love to go back and relive the story.
Good man going back to 360 games. Such a great generation.
On PC this game is a treat! I can never make up my mind to play with either keyboard and mouse or a controller though lol it seems like it was definitely designed for KBM in the menus and inventory but during gameplay it’s a lot easier and more comfortable with a controller… but both work just fine
Batman Arkham City, skyrim, dead space 2, portal 2, la noir, Deus ex, skyward sword, mortal Kombat reboot, gears of war 2, Minecraft etc....
By far, my favorite year in gaming
I actually started with the first witcher game, and that game still has one of the best soundtracks ever, and even though it's a bit strange and clunky, it has an unmatched atmosphere
I still belive the first one is the best of them all. Replaying it every year on November I know it by heart... the atmosphere, soundtrack and characters...I grew up with this game, so glad my parents bought it alongside with a new computer as a Christmas gift in 2007. Books are even better ♥
that Little Sisters quest still gives me the creeps.
Would also love to see a midgame save for these types of videos
What a coincidence. The Witcher 3 is my favourite game of all time and I was thinking about the next gen upgrade today because surely its close to release and was considering whether I should finally try Witcher 2. I literally bought it an hour before I watched this video. Sadly Witcher 1 looks too old for me to try but Witcher 2 looks like it's fine. Great content as always Matty!
Witcher 1 is janky. Incredibly janky. But I honestly prefer it to the Witcher 2. The story is great, the game looks pretty good for 2007 (other than the character models of course), the combat while janky is but unique and fun and the alchemy system is the best in the series. I'd recommend it.
Also I'd recommend collecting all the cards in the game. Don't ask what that means
Mods 😁
@@metetural9140 Yeah I have no doubts about the game from a story perspective. I'd love to play it but I don't play games on PC and the gameplay looks incredibly dated as well. I'm not a snob but that game just looks too old haha
It's pretty good but if you don't like super linear games you might have a hard time getting into it.
If you're a fan of the universe you'll love witcher 2, it's a little janky, but not enough for it to take away from the experience
Would you say this game had similar combat to witcher 3 post patch?
When I completed this game on insane was so bloody satisfying
This was my introduction to The Witcher. That opening cinematic alone made me go "This looks so good! I can't believe this is on the same console with Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption!"
I absolutely love the witcher 2 it was the first in franchise i played. Saw a friend playing it and was like dang i have to get that. Then i went back and got the first witcher. So i was hyped for 3 when it came out and even bought an xbox one to play it
I have only played Witcher 3 which was probably my first big RPG and I fell in love with it and think I might have to try this. I have only played a few hours of Skyrim in vr.... Which would I give a go. Witcher 2 or Skyrim (non VR)
I cant wait to see what they are gonna do witcher 4 haha i HOPE we can create our own witcher and choose the school
Does it run ok on series x?
I've never played this game, or seen it played. (Only played 3) I am very surprised by how good it looks.
I would love a Letho game... him trying to rebuild a witcher school would be sweet as hell
So does it hold up Matty? i've not played Witcher 2 for ages :)
This is why I really enjoy Xbox because I was able to play this on back-combat I love PS but games like these I get to experience. Played this game during the pandemic and I loved it can’t wait for more of this franchise.
also the fact that backwards compatibility especially for this game is more than just playing the old game. With how much that was changed its basically a remaster.
I'm glad you mentioned the combat here. Much like Witcher 1, the sword play was designed by actual swordsmen. So, the flow and button timing were all more realistic then many other games of its time. When the tip of the sword glows orange, that is when you should in put the next command. It takes a little longer to perfect, but when you do, it makes for an extremely smooth combat experience.
it was smooth and better then Witcher 3
Cdpr should just remake the full witcher games like mass effect and mafia trilogy - these remakes would be welcome at £60
Yeah W1&2 could do with a good remaster/remake. W3 too kinda but mainly just restoring cut content
For me The Witcher 2 was also a random purchase haha.
After the Witcher show, I decided to play all 3 Witcher games in order. The Witcher 3 was my favorite, but it wouldn't be around without the Witcher 2, which was as great in its own time, especially because of the story and execution. I actually liked the Witcher 1, but it was clearly limited in technology, gameplay (the combat was just left-clicking in time), but the storytelling did hold up. In total, it is a very unique northern-european take on a medieval fantasy RPG style game, and it couldn't be replaced by any other franchise.
Damn, I was hesitant to play this because I didn't think it would hold up to TW3, but this looks amazing.
It gets upped to 4k and auto hdr on series x it looks beautiful still
True roleplaying and a beautiful world.
I played this for the first time in about 2018 and loved it. Good game.
A better game than The Witcher 3 by most accounts.
Combat in this game was so much deeper and better realized than its sequel. 😔
100% agree about the combat.
I really wish TW3 kept the look of this game(which it did have in the reveal). I don't think any game has a better atmosphere than TW2. It's kind of sad they're dropping Red Engine.
Started to replay witcher 3, months ago. Realized never really played #2. Bought my first prebuilt 2 weeks ago. Doing it the proper way😎
I'd recommend playing 1 before 2. Otherwise it won't make sense why Geralt is with Foltest
@@metetural9140 exactly why I got a pc. Already owned it in the 360. However, first time loading in way back then, seeing you can import saved file from 1 got me intrigued. Then same prompted on 3, however, that's on the ps4
The opening section was a nightmare until they balanced it.
I completed it 6th time after few years break. This time finally on highest "Dark" difficulty. It was really enjoyable experience. Of course gameplay is more clunky than Witcher 3, some design choices are bad, but as whole game is fun, challenging and has great story (probably the best of all trilogy). If you accept some of its flaws, you can have really good fun. I really enjoy that it doesnt always hold you by the hand but actually forces to figure something out on your own.
Man I need to play this game
Wow I think I need to find this game
I played it last month still good wish they remade it and Witcher 1 with the Witcher 3 game play style
That’d be amazing
I've always wanted that too 🐱
The Witcher 2 is such a good game, whenever someone asks if they should play the first two Witcher games or just skip to 3 I always say to start with 2 as it holds up MUCH better than the first and is pretty much a giant prologue for the Witcher 3, and you'll also get a ton of info about the Witcher world you wouldn't get otherwise if you just skipped to 3, the fact that it has two completely different paths to go down mid game is great too
The ivoreth vs roach choice really does completely change endgame?
I love that if you get a tatoo on this and don’t have it removed it progresses to the witcher 3 if you choose to move all your choices to the witcher 3 from witcher 2
Unfortunate that it's only for pc that they could do that.
@@chrisj320ac3 really?! I had no idea
Love all of them, currently 80 hours into Witcher 3 going for 100 percent. From watching your channel we have so many games in common. Fallout 3, Fable series, Bethesda games such as Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout. We bros, bro 😂
That’s a hell of a task man, I feel like it would take forever to 100% Witcher 3
@@jeremyroberts8822 it probably will, maybe around fhe 170, 250 mark. But I did put 250 hours into Oblivion when I was 13 to 14 so hopefully I can do the same nowadays 😂
The crown you spoke of, always belonged to Bioware and then it just passed to CD Projekt. Bethesda never held it 🙂
Roche is my favourite bit of this game.
Witcher 2 is intriguing! One of the most unique games - the best way to play is on the lowest diff. Has many problems, but still enjoyable, I think!
The Witcher 2 trailer is one of the best game trailer I've seen!
I gotta try to get into these games. I’m a stickler about starting trilogies/series from the beginning, so it’d be nice to be able to play the Witcher 1 easily and/or remastered before diving into 2 and 3
I actually love the Witcher 1 on PC. The combat was really rhythmic and when you got in the groove of changing styles mid combos it can be really fun and satisfying.
@@huskycruxes7232 I don’t have a pc currently but I’d like to one day when I’m in a more permanent living space. you think it plays well on the steam deck maybe? I’m thinking about getting that in the meantime

Magnificent game, wish they remake it or ateast remaster it as the controls are a bit outdated today but the story , characters and world remain a masterpiece ❤
After the release the guy responsible for combat design and animations continued working on the game. He released an unofficial patch fixing many design issues related to eq, combat and signs. Honestly, the game should only be played with this patch. I completed both versions of Witcher 2 and have no doubt about it.
It completely overhauls the combat and the gear you get and when, which makes it a vastly different experience. Search for it online.
Edit: almost forgot, it overhauls the skill tree as well!
It's my man Vernon Bro-che
have really been thinking about doing a full witcher trilogy playthrough. but man, witcher 1 looks rough lol
Great game ! Can’t wait to see what Witcher 4 looks like on UNREAL 5 !
This game was made around mass effect and dragon age era so I think that explains the similarities.
Back in the day they looked up to BioWare then surpassed them with Witcher 3.
Yeah, they even used BioWares Aurora Engine for the first game...and thats the reason why this game is forever broken, that engine was ancient even in 2007.
Is it better than Cyberpunk 2077? lmao
tried playing it recently but you cannot slow the controls down so it gave me really bad motion sickness so stopped playing it
Got the xbox 360 version, amazing what CD project got out of the 360. Recently bought in sale on xbox one and it still looks great.
play it on the One X or better and you basically get a remaster. I played the 1st half on X One and the 2nd half on Series X and the difference is crazy. Like it does crazy stuff like render objects at range based off of the close up version so you can see fine details at a distance.
The health and crafting really DID need a do-over. The music and graphics quality have aged well. Also highly recommend the book, the English translation anyways
Witcher 2 was fire at one point that was my highest played 360s game but also it runs in 4k with Dolby Vision to on Xbox One X and Xbox series X and I think Xbox series s
I have both Witcher 2 and 3 but I have never played them, perhaps I will soon.
