Oblivion is the game responsible for my Bethesda Game Studios breakthrough. From there, I would take the deep dive into games like Fallout 3 and Morrowind without looking back. There's something special about all BGS games, but there's nothing quite as nostalgic as your first.

Oblivion will always hold a special place in my heart. I remember being 10 years old, at a friends house, watching his brother play on 360. I was floored by how 'real' it looked and when he was going to Kvatch and the sky started to turn blood red I was hooked. I got it for myself a year later and I couldn't get enough. Spent many hundred of hours, possibly more, exploring and getting completely immersed in the world.
Now it looks goofy, the voice acting is either way over the top or deadpan and the mechanics are very broken but that just makes it more fun to play now as an adult. I replayed it 2 or 3 years ago and got quite a laugh out of it.
10/10 Game
Nice I might try it thanks
11/10*
Thats literally my story with Oblivion. Except I still love it just as much
Very similar to my introduction with the game. Went to my friends when I was about that age and watched him play and couldn't believe how good it looked and I loved the water ripples. Lol Downloaded it a little whole ago on the series x and have been replaying it and absolutely loving reliving it.
wouldn't be a bethesda game without broken mechanics.
Oblivion is the reason I play video games. It's what caused me to go from an occasional casual player to considering games an actual hobby.
Also; insanely good soundtrack. Some of the best adventuring music in any game, to this day.
Oblivion has such a special place in my heart. It was everything I wanted and more from an Elder Scrolls game at the time. The soundtrack is so iconic and amazing.
"You sleep rather soundly for a murderer." was one of the most memorable moments in any game for me.

Oblivion is amazing, played it a few months back also. People always ragging on the looks of the characters and the definitely amazing way this game has aged over the years, but I think it adds to the charm of this game. Also increasing difficulty bar and still remembering the first time I got beat up by rats. I always remember this game whenever a video game has me beaten up by rats. I just enjoy the atmosphere this game has for sure.
Honestly, I don't think the game has kept up with time it may of passed in it's day but in 2022 I don't' see anything really special with it even for an old game.
Definitely compared with Bethesda's later titles like Fallout 3. Game is definitely more in depth than Skyrim but it really shows how bad Bethesda was at actually making functional games at the time, and honestly still are to an extent. Fallout 3 feels better to play only because using guns in that clunky environment works better than swinging a sword and I still think Fallout 3's graphics kind of hold up even today unlike Oblivion's.
One thing I did like about the game was the writing/NPCs though. But that alone doesn't really make a game good.
But to be brutally honest, it didn't even work as well as a lot of Playstation 2 RPGs. Actually playing the game s***s balls. I've played a lot of PS2 RPGs... and stuff like Steambot Chronicles, Metal Saga, Final Fantasy 12 kind of beat it quite easily as practical games despite being older.
I'm curious whether this game's success came from hype training which is something Bethesda is good at doing.
I think if it took a different art design perhaps people wouldn't look at it so poorly. Fallout 3 is only a few years newer, and as I said, I think the game holds up a lot better. It's art design is also different which definitely helps.
This is the game that made me fall in love with RPGs. Bought it for my 360 after drooling on the screenshots in the previews in game magazines. I was shocked by how good the graphics looked, little did I know I'd feel the same way about the writing and the quests and the exploration. I think Oblivion has the best side quests of any Bethesda game. Even though I'm much older now and more of its flaws clearly stand out to me, I still truly love this game.
I still remember when my brother brought Oblivion over to my house in ‘06. People forget how revolutionary this game was at the time
I remember it being the game that made me realize DLC content and microtransactions were going to be inevitable. $3 for horse armor! It was definitely an amazing game to experience at the time it came out. It's odd to say, but it looked amazing. Aside from the intense amounts of bloom everywhere.
I was still playing n64, ps2 and ps1 at the time. Had a band practice, went to my drummers house and he booted up his 360 with Oblivion, loaded his game up, stood next to his horse over a cliff edge looking over the tree sprawled landscape and I was blown away....instantly got the game on pc and eventually ps3 and saw it all for myself....never had such a wow factor with a game since.
Nah the airwaves are just ruled by kids who were 6 and 5 years old when it came out
Morrowind was way better. The only thing Oblivion is better at is combat system
@@stevegallenstein Subjective of course, I had great experiences with both games.
I still listen to the Oblivion OST in the background, it's so relaxing especially in the mornings for some reason
Back when the AAA gaming industry was full of passionate, talented people. 1996 to about 2012 was the glory days of gaming for me.
2006 - 2008 was the golden age of video games. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Crysis, Bioshock, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 all came out in this span.
Just gonna correct ya there, Matty, about the Emperor. He's actually Sir Patrick Stewart. It's Martin who is Sean Bean.
But yeah, Oblivion is so good. Replayed it a few months back, and it's still as great, and clunky, as I remember.
Was gonna mention that- u beat me 2 it
Same here haha
I was about to say that too :P
Sir* Patrick Stewart
UGH I GOT THE NAMES MIXED. Appreciate the correction 🙏
When this came out, I had been dealing with bouts of insomnia that had me full on waking up at 3-4am, unable to get back to sleep. When this happened on a day off, I’d just get up and play this for hours and I loved all every minute. It made waking up that early much more bearable. I played as a female Dark Elf with a short sword and fire magic. I loved the Fighter’s Guild.
Thieves guild ftw
Dark brotherhood all day
Can't wait for Skyblivion man.
Ok, the editing and commentary is MUCH better than usual. Anyone else notice it?
Yeah 👍
B’yeah 👍
Must be the G-Fuel 😂
I wonder if he got an editor?
This is my favorite Elder Scrolls and I played Skyrim first. The factions and gameplay clicked with me way more, especially summoner builds because I loved the variety of summons in this gane. And the Arena needs to comeback in either an Elder Scrolls or new fallout. Its just relaxing fun to mess around in.
There’s a very soothing and transcendent atmosphere to this game that was unparalleled for its time. The sheer amount of freedom and unique quest lines made it a jack of all trades fantasy RPG. It was my first Elder Scrolls and I’ll never forget the step out moment. I don’t think I even opened my first oblivion gate until a few hundred hours later.
Jean Luc-Picard has one of the most amazing narrator voices I’ve ever heard.
This was probably one of my fav games of all time. The memories I have on this game are unmatched. I miss gaming back in the day. It’s just not the same anymore💔

Facts
Because games were made by people who just wanted to make fun great games now it's all corporate bs and most dont have a clue about video games
Playing oblivion for the first time as a kid was really a mind blowing experience and really showed me what was possible in video games as a medium
I played Skyrim in 2011 and finally started oblivion for the first time this year and damn the game is really something even without nostalgia. Quests, agency and writing are unlike many other games. I hope you do some more videos on it
Played it for the first time in 2018 so i didnt have nostalgia for it, and now its my favourite elder scrolls, replayed it this year and i love the vibe of this game
Holy shit 2018 was 4 years ago... fucking time man
I have a lot of the same feelings as you about Oblivion. I first played it in early high school and completely fell in love with it. I still consider it to be my favorite game of all time.
I remember playing this game when it came out. I was a in high school and my friend got it since he had a 360. I had played and loved Morrowind and it was astounding how much better the graphics were. Right after that I started saving up money for a 360 and Oblivion. Took a while since I was working at a restaurant on weekends at the time. Still I eventually got the 360 and game and loved it. Tons of great memories.
My favourite game of all time. With the 4K/60fps update on series X, it’s a timeless classic.
It may very well be because it was the first one I played, but Oblivion is my favorite Elder Scrolls game. The atmosphere was so immersive, the music was absolute perfection, so many of the quests were memorable and entertaining, and while not to the extent of Morrowind you could still break the game and become comically OP if you learned the ins and outs of every mechanic. It also seemed to hit that perfect balance between streamlined action and complex RPG mechanics, at least to me. Skyrim started simplifying some things too much.
My first BGS game, I played it "couch-coop" on my friends 360. As in we took turns playing. Basically a large chunk of that summer was playing this game. Eventually I bonded with others over the PC version. Haven't played a BGS game since Skyrim but I'm hoping Starfield rekindles a similar experience.
Thanks for pumping out videos on both channels so consistently, I appreciate your work
I just started playing this game. Since I’ve followed your channel you’ve pushed me to go back and enjoy the older bgs games. F3 was also my first bgs game and then Skyrim. But to go back and play oblivion has been a great time so far and I never would have tried it if not for this channel.
I replayed this game recently too, and god damn did that intro give me chills
I remember really getting into Oblivion 7 or 8 years ago. When I reached Shivering Isles or the first few Oblivion portals I couldn’t believe what was happening.
I'm so happy to see you introducing Oblivion to your viewers. For me, this was my 1st TES game and I love it still to this day! It has so much more than Skyrim, more crafting, custom spells, some really well designed factions and a fairly equal distribution of all of the races. Skyrim was a wonderful game too but it doesn't hold a candle to my beloved Oblivion! Plus it didn't use Arnold Scwarzenegger's face model on all of the men (YUCK). I also really loved that the towns/cities were so diverse and they felt so alive... It has been many years since I first played it (about 16) and I am yet to find something else that makes me love a place such as Cyrodiil.
Yeah, Oblivion was my gateway drug to RPGs. By the way, the voice actor of the Emperor was Patrick Steward, Matin Septim was voiced by Sean Bean.
One of my favourites, loved not going to joffrey and exploring the world without oblivion
Much love and respect to you and your channel MrMattyPlays.
Oblivion is the game that started me into bathesda games. I’ve been following the skyblivion team because the updated into Skyrim oblivion game looks awesome can’t wait to play it in a few years.
Man. Oblivion was the game that got me into “video games” in 2006 beyond just casual Halo, GTA, Mario, Smash Bros, etc. Like you Matty, it got me on my BGS kick that is still with me 16+ years later. It’s the only 360 game installed on my XSX, lol.

This game is definitely a pillar of my childhood and what games are to me. This video alone is enough of an excuse for me to boot this game up again, never uninstall this one.
Matty, Patrick Stewart voiced the Emperor and Sean Bean played his son, Martin Septim.
Love your content matty‼️ keep doing your thing bro
I remember playing this for the first time back in the day and being used to the small levels of most games back then, being completely overwhelmed when you leave the first dungeon. Lol, for other games that would have been a good chunk of the game "world."
I took a break from gaming in the early 2000's. This was the game that got me back into gaming! Great video
I've played this game a million times on a ton of different play throughs and I never knew there were secret passages in the ruins you access by stepping on those plates. Learn something every day haha
My favorite memory was setting the game soundtrack to silent and playing Beserk OST over it as I entered and fought in oblivion for the first time ever!! I highly recommend it!! Listening to the Eclipse theme from Beserk while fighting off hordes of Dremora felt like the closest thing I'd ever get to being like Guts without actually being him.
The entire time I was there all I could care to do was swing my greatsword over and over again. It was madness and the fear and atmosphere was completely bone chilling...
Oblivions soundtrack is my favorite out of all the BGS games, so it never occurred to me to try playing other tracks in its place. Thanks for the tip good sir!
Played this one in elementary school. One of my favorite games ever. Still replay it once every year or so.
just started my first ever modded oblivion playthrough this year. I'm loving it
I will always prefer Oblivion over Skyrim. With that said, I picked up Oblivion recently and it did not age like wine gameplay wise lol Skyrim definitely is more "timeless" in that respect, but as far as initial playthroughs....OBLIVION was better and I played it after Skyrim back in the day.
(G-fuel 😮💨😮💨😮💨)
This is a pretty damn good review. Nicely put together!
I bought this because it was recommended to me by a gamestop employee (back when they had pretty good employees). This is the best rpg I've played. The side quests, game mechanics, and music all take you to Cyrodil.
Matty your ad reads are so perfect I’m gonna try g fuel!
Dope video never played oblivion but I’m going to check it out
I replayed Elder Scrolls Morrowind and Oblivion in Skyrim so many times but Elder Scrolls Oblivion was the first Xbox 360 game I got with my 360 because I literally bought this game in 360 at the same time when it first came out
Matty, we are the same age and I too played Fallout 3 first and then played Oblivion after hearing about it from a kid I played football with. Absolutely loved it and it is still my favorite ES.
Hey Matty, great video! I'm currently trying to mod out Morrowind on the Steam Deck and this video made me super happy! Also, that G Fuel ad was great! Every time an ad starts with "Hey, didn't see you there", I know I'm in for a good time!😂
The one element I hope improves the most in ES6 is combat. Everything else in the franchise is fantastic, but the combat was quite bad in my opinion. It would be very nice to have great combat when crawling all those dungeons and fighting enemies out in the open world.
Just adding counter moves would be a massive improvement
Also I hope they update the stealth system along with combat.
@@kirbyfairbanks4766 the stealth system in Skyrim was really good as long as you didn't break the system to God your character. You could sneak up on characters to do stealth kills and pickpocket. If you got caught by powerful enemies you were done for.
i actually like the combat system we dont need overly complex bs. like in kingdom come deliverance.
The problem is its hard to make great melee combat in a first person game. Yes you can play in third but the games are designed for first person. If they change es6 to a third person only game then they could do a lot with the combat, that wont happen tho.
Oblivion was my first real deep dive into BGS .. that first experience was mind blowing like I've never experienced since. The open world, nonlinear like no other was just awesome at that time.
The music is next level nostalgia. I remember getting this game in my teens on 360. Never beat it but played so many hours; my older brother beat it though.
You’re one of the best Xbox centric CZcamsrs out there Marty!
Hes not Xbox centric
@@AnalKing3401 Yes he is. He mostly covers Xbox hence “Xbox centric”. I didn’t say he ONLY covered Xbox.
I remember being 12 and walking out of the sewers for the first time and being absolutely blown away by the graphics and environment. The DUST particles in the air made my mind explode.
I love the way the UI looks in Oblivion, really feels like an RPG pen an paper game.
I just today happened to install Oblivion for the first time in years. Many years.
Honestly, I'm surprised how much I'm still enjoying it and how good the graphics are (aside from the character models). I'm only using the UESP and a mod to make the leveling modifier x5 for each attribute by default, but otherwise it's vanilla. Having fun with it. As a kid, Morrowind was a bit too difficult for me to get into so Oblivion was in many ways my first ES game. Hard not to love it.
Uriel Septim was voiced by Patrick Stewart. Martin was Sean Bean.
I remember when I tried Oblivion for the first time as a Skyrim player . . . went into a cave of cultists and got my rear end whooped and took a second playthrough to get the hand of the mechanics. First time in Pale Pass encountering a ogre was scared out my wits end and encountering high tear zombies is nightmare fuel lol. What I always remember is that soldiers diary in Pell Pass. . .
I actually replayed this game again last year. I modded it as usual though with mods I hadnt used before. My favorite type of character is a Paladin, so I rolled a Breton Paladin with a new mod that expanded on the Knights of the Nine story and it was a full fledged expansion that was an amazing time.
I'm loving these retrospectives along with Retro Rebound. In an age of hateclicks and controversy, you're one of my top guys. Keep up the work, Matty!
Oblivion was my first BGS game. I was hooked.
The soundtrack to this game, Morrowind, and Skyrim are the best soundtracks I have ever heard. So good, I downloaded all the tracks for my reading playlist. I love it
What's Captain Jean-Luc Picard doing in Skyrim?? Did Starfleet Command send him on an Away Mission?? 😅 😂 🤣
Sir Patrick Stewart voiced the emperor Uriel Septim VII
Matty thank you for showing love to all the retro titles✌🏿❤️ Also thank you so much for snapping about Halo. I would gladly follow you into battle Sir🖖🏿
I never knew they did that with the races at the beginning….that’s dope
I hated this game at first. Sold it.
Then by swapping games it came back in my collection. Tried it...loved it.
It started my love for RPG games.
500 hours in this game alone.
I need to replay it this year 🤙
I LOVE THESE TYPES OF VIDEOS MATTY 😀😀😀
you made me so tempted to try this game while i am waiting for the skybivion come out
Well 3 months ago I said that he needs the Elder Scrolls 6 to come out cuz how he's been lately so glad to see that he's playing the older games
Matty throwing out two bangers in one day let’s go
Just started a new playthrough of Oblivion Yesterday, your timing is impeccable.
Hilariously, I also am playing a Kat..
This video coming out shortly after I finished the game for the first time. Keep up the work, my man. 🙏
Time to continue with New Vegas (also first time) after this.
And thank you for finally getting on the Gfuel train!!! I love the stuff. Drink it every day 🥰
The intro music of Oblivion still gives me chills lol

I love Oblivion. I put so many hours into it. I’d love for an official remake, but I’m eager to try Skyblivion.
This is the game that made me fall in love with Elder Scrolls and learn about Fallout. Now I'm a huge Bethesda fan

No way you uploaded this the same day I started a new Oblivion playthrough. 😅
Just finishing up a few QOL mods with the new Collections feature from NexusMods and gonna jump back into my favorite game.
I always loved that part where the guard says “yo prisoner protect the emperor!”
Yes..ill do that
I love this! I might have to replay this on Gamepass.
Good video Matty
I have such a connection with this game, top three game all time for me.
Uriel isn't Sean Beank, he's Patrick Stewart. Sean Bean is his kiddo
Rebinding your keyboard settings is super easy in this game. Just switch the ‘e’ button and the space bar, and you’re good to go.
Also, rebinding the cast spell button to the ‘f’ button can help as well.
Captain Picard as Emperor Uriel Septim. Gotta love that.
I play a breton as a warrior, they have resistance to magic which is great for warriors. It is also a little easier to level up because their warrior stats start low; if you want to go into magic they are already geared to it.
Man, I used to love my Prima Games Guide for this game. Such a big tome.
I love that they got Patrick Stewart to voice the Emperor
This is so Nostalgic
hey Matty do you ever stream games on twitch, I Would love to you see you play for a full 8 hour session
Captain Picard on a horse: Make It So & Engage!! 😳
Thank you man. Want to set the game up now
Very excited for skyblivion :)
I played and beat Oblivion back when it released on my 360. I just recently bought it on a steam sale for like $4 on my Steam Deck. Playing this game on a handheld is awesome. I have started playing it again right before you posted this
