She wanted to sing and play the drums, but she needed to be out front. It didn’t work with her hidden behind the drum kit and at the back of the stage.
I will forever be grateful to Karen Carpenter for bringing eating disorders to the forefront. Before she died, it was something nobody talked about.
But GOD, how sad her passing was and what a loss to the whole world.
She never talked about it either. I saw a British TV interview about a year before her death where she denied it was a problem. Karen Carpenter's death certainly highlighted the issue of eating disorders including anorexia, but she never talked about it herself.
Karen Carpenter was known as “One take Karen” because she famously would only do one take to record a song. The greatest pop voice I have ever heard in my 55 years. And this was my wedding song in 1991.
In my 64 years. Broke my heart when she died.
She only did one song in one take, and that was " Now ".
Sung at mine too ... 1976.
And I remember going to SO MANY weddings in the 70s and even early 80s where this was the First Dance song. We start out walking and learn to run... so beautiful !

Karen was indeed a great drummer, but according to everything out there it was the great Hal Blaine on the drums in the studio recording of this.

I remember attending a candlelight vigil at their house when she passed away. She was an Angel on earth. Her passing brought eating disorders to national attention and I’m sure saved thousands of lives in doing so.
Unfortunately it did not save the girl from Different Strokes! What was her name? She either died from bulimia or anorexia
@@David_Theisen her name was Dana Plato it was a drug overdose after doing a Howard Stern interview. Some jerk called in and started saying hateful things to and about her. She got "home" to a van she was staying in outside her mother's house, overdosed and was found by her jerk fiancee, who took pictures of her dead body and sold them to tabloids. She had a pretty tragic life and death.

Karen Carpenter and Linda Ronstadt are the two most outstanding female vocalists to come out of the 70s. Sad that Karen died in 1983 at only 32… and Linda today has a form of Parkinson’s and no longer has the ability to sing…
She died from anorexia.
Can't leave out Ann Wilson of Heart if the 1970s are the period we speak of. Her voice is incredible. Karen has a beautifully soft voice but Ann can do soft and belt out a monster too.
Karen's anorexia accelerated her Parkinson. Very sad.

Karen's voice was so clear and pure. Yet it was tinged with sadness. Great singers always reveal what's inside, and Karen gave us her sadness.
The Carpenters' Christmas album is absolutely fabulous. Karen's favorite music was Christmas music. She was just a big kid. We miss you, beautiful child.
My mom worked for an otolaryngologist that treated Karen. My mom got to know her and always got a Christmas present from her. Wonderful voice and kind heart, ❤❤❤

It’s “The Carpenters” because Karen was the voice, but Richard was the BOSS. He produced and arranged the harmonies and arrangements on EVERY song. He told Karen what notes to sing and play. She IS enchanting, one of the best voices in history, but Richard is a musical genius.
Plus he's the pianist they love behind her.
He probably had a greater appreciation of her talent than she did.
The core of this song started out as a jingle for a bank advertising loans to newlyweds. Richard heard it, went out and snapped up the rights, and expanded on it. Then they recorded the expanded version.

Richard pleaded and cajoled her to come out from behind the drums and start singing the lead. I think her insecurities were due to her overbearing parents. Such a hard life she had growing up. Richard was her light and North Star for quite a few years. Everyone should see the documentary about the Carpenter's. It would really open your eyes and better explain why she had such a bad eating disorder that eventual led to her death. Such a beauty, and a voice that could almost match the Heavenly Choir. No doubt, she is one of the stars in heaven.

Karen was a beast on those drums, and her brother Richard was a master musician, and a master music arranger too.
Wish they had let her do like Phill Collins and Don Henley and sing and stay/hide behind the drums. She loved the drums and she would have had some cover.
Also, I read her family drove away a man that truly loved and encouraged her. Don't know if there is much to that, but the man she did marry was not good for or to her!

Yeah, I recently saw that drum solo for the first time and loved it! I had never seen her smile so big like that before. Knowing how sad a person she was, it was great to see her beaming with joy while playing the drums.
Karen’s voice was magical and perfection yet her inner life to her was never perfection. Knowing her struggles with anorexia was heartbreaking…we lost a beautiful musical person…RIP

Guys, I just love you two! I’m an old 66 year old fart, and I remember when the Carpenters were at their peak. I grew up on Old Country and locked Country Rock. But one day a friend had an 8-track ( yes that was ancient days🤣🤣) of the Carpenters, and I was mesmerized by Karen’s voice. The depth and clarity was off the charts, as well as that low sultry quality. From this point on I became open to so many different genres. It’s like my eyes were opened for the first time. Karen has the most relaxed, smooth voice of any singer I've heard. She never needed to stretch to get to any note, that allows her diction to be perfect. Every word is crystal clear and perfectly pronounced. And when she goes low ... just money.
There was a youtuber recently who demonstrated that Karen Carpenter's pitch was perfect, and used an oscilloscope to prove it. Mind blowing how accurate her pitch was.
Yes. Frank Sinatra had the same talent. Enunciating every word with comprehendible precision no matter the pitch, key, or volume, etc;.. It blows my mind that Karen was an even better DRUMMER than a singer.

There is something very special and "otherworldly" about sibling harmonies. Stunning!
I've always assumed that sibling harmonies come from singing together from a very young age, but I read something recently that pointed out that part of it is due to the similarities in bone structure, etc. Not sure how accurate that is, but seems plausible.
Plus, they recorded themselves as their own backup singers on a lot of their songs, thus the seamless blend of voice harmony.

Her voice was pure silk, and you could hear every word perfectly enunciated, every time. Such a sad loss when she passed, so young. She had so much more to share with the world. I was crushed when I heard the news...because she was special.

Karen normally sang as a contralto, but she had the ability to transition to a much lower range; hence, the “brightness” and the full “richness” provided her with unmistakable, angelic vocals… RIP Karen 🙏🏻
Jay/Amber, Best female voice of all-time. I'd recommend "Rainy Days And Mondays" and "Hurting Each Other" next. She was a great drummer and enjoyed that more than anything. This is one of 2 signature songs for them. This was the wedding song of the 70s.

Yep. Also "Ticket to Ride". What Richard was able to do with that great Beatles song is amazing. "It's Going To Take Some Time" is really fun and allows Karen to really shine. "Goodbye to Love" is also awesome.
Ella Fitzgerald was a huge fan of Karen Carpenter, and the great Ella Fitzgerald knew a thing or two about singing.

Karen Carpenter had one of the finest voices of our lifetime. She's up there with Streisand, Celine Dione, and Ronstadt

@@teresabunting6364 In terms of pure beauty of tone, nobody can top Karen. And that's not taking anything away from those other fine singers. But Karen's voice tone was one of a kind. Special.
Linda's voice sounds "brassy" when belting high notes, a sound similar to playing a trumpet loudly. To me, that's not an optimum quality compared to rest of her range. Karen was & always will remain without fault.

Her death was slow and horribly documented by the tabloids every week, making it worse for her. It was so sad. I was a young teenager and didn't know anorexia existed, when people were starving in some parts of Africa at the time, it didn't compute in my head. It was just so so sad. 😢
Karen was a great drummer too… She mastered that before the world 🌎 discovered her angelic voice….. No auto tune !!!!!! Gone way too soon!!!!
And she loved playing the drums. When they made her quit playing her drum and come out front, she didn't like it. She was actually self conscious about being out front. It's been suggested that it was a contributor to her getting so sick.
No auto tune, but Richard layered multiple recordings of her voice to give it a richer sound. There is (was?) a video of it on CZcams of all the processing he did. She did have a beautiful voice to begin with, though.

It's amazing to think Karen actually thought she wasn't a very good singer and had to be talked into it. There is a documentary on them that ends sadly in Karen's passing after her struggles with anorexia which caused a heart condition.
Karen once said that "The money is in the basement" in reference to her ability to hold such deep rich notes. She was wise do do this sparingly which made that seldom used richness all the more special. You should check out their song "Caught Between (Goodbye and I Love You)". When she sings the line 'Like the Devil in the deep blue sea' and holds that last note, well, it's just heaven to me.
"Where Do I Go From Here " is absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful.

Karen was born a year before me. She is a perfect pitch contra alto. I had the worlds biggest crush on her and I met and knew a girl that went to Downey High school with her and Richard. I was so crushed on her that Cath told me that she would tell her I said hi when she went back home. It broke my heart when she died. she was such a beautiful soul.
Also check out Anne Murray they both sing by liner note and very difficult to do. Both do with incredible ease. Both can do songs in one take.

In an interview back in the days when they were still recording and performing, someone asked Frank Sinatra if he had heard them. With all the big time singers around back then Sinatra said oh yeah. That girl is probably the only singer these days that I would pay to see perform. Talk about high praise.

Loved your reactions. One thing a lot of people don't know about Karen Carpenter is that she's a very accomplished drummer. She played all the drums on all their recorded songs.
She actually played very little drums on their recordings. It was mostly done by session musician Hal Blaine. This was common back then, even though she certainly could have played.
This and the fact that they moved her out from her drum kit and put her in front of the band during performances led to a lot of her frustrations later on.
Look for Karen Carpenters drum solo on CZcams to see why she was voted Outstanding Drummer. Also most concerts she would do a set or two behind the drums.
This was the quintessential first dance at every wedding in the ‘70s.
Millions of couples have used this at their weddings since this song came out.

She was the best. It still breaks my heart that she's gone. And those layered harmonies I believe was based upon Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" in the 60s.
Every time I hear her voice, it makes me happy and sad at the same time. Such a loss when she died from anorexia, and that she didnt see herself the way the rest of us saw her as a beautiful person inside and out. I was a metal head who couldn't help but love the Carpenters for the sheer talent they had.
Whenever I hear this song I automatically tear up, because it is so beautiful. Karen’s angelic voice has that effect on me and together with her brother Richard, this song has some of the greatest harmonies.
This was the song we sang at our 1971 nursing school graduation in NH. Our glee club instructor/graduation prepper (an RN instructor) wasn't keen on it at first but said she came to understand the wording and message better. I think it was because it was considered a pop song that she first had trouble accepting it. It was time of change and acceptance between different age groups. Anyway, was very nice at our graduation.❤

I love The Carpenters. Their songs always make me sad, even a supposedly happy one like this (though the verses still sound melancholic). The line "so much of life ahead" always gets me, knowing what happened to Karen afterwards. There´s an amazing video of her playing a multitude of drums. You guys should check it out!
I was just thinking that this song in particular always makes me feel sad and melancholic is the perfect description. For me it's more sad nostalgia for that time of my life, for that time in music, for that time in my family, for that time in our country.
@@cheryldellaroyle5317 I´m from Scotland and I wasn´t born yet when the song came out, so that doesn´t apply to me, but I would never deny the nostalgic pull music has. For me, Karen´s voice has just always been the perfect encapsulation of loneliness, tragic almost to the point where you feel she´s resigned herself to it, more blatantly in "Goodbye to Love", for example, but also, for me, strangely, here. Incidentally, I recommend you check out "Slow" and "Aretha" by Rumer, if you´ve never heard her. For my money, she´s the closest we have to Karen now.

When the Carpenters released this song, it was a huge hit! It was used in commercials for Wells Fargo Bank I think it was. Many of my friends used this song at their weddings at the time. :) Such a beautiful song!
Actually, it was written by Paul Williams for a Crocker Bank commercial (which can be seen on CZcams). Richard Carpenter saw the commercial and knew he could arrange it for Karen's voice. He got ahold of Paul Williams and asked to see the Whole song. Paul said "sure", and then scrambled to write the rest of it because he had only written enough to cover the 60 second commercial, but there was no way he was going to pass up a chance to have The Carpenter's sing one of His songs!

Karen's voice is instantly recognizable! Diction, intonation and emotion are perfect. Close harmonies are a trademark of Richard's arranging skills. Being a former clarinetist I have a soft spot for the clarinet in this song. My favorite part with the clarinet is at the end when the C# (D# on Bb clarinet) is held out and becomes the root of the final chord (C# major). I can't recall the theory behind it right now so I'll just say it's a pleasant surprise. Richard was right to realize this was a hit after hearing it in a Crocker Bank commercial. Speaking of Richard, I'm glad you acknowledged him as he was the genius behind their sound. His arrangements went hand in hand with Karen's vocals. They needed each other to be great.

Karen and Richard just couldn't make a bad song. I feel blessed to have shared the planet with them. Their music was so powerful, and beautiful, and majestic. My parents AND grandparents were fans.
