No matter what you will do, J Dilla’s swing has a lot to do with the flaws of the Mpc he used. A lot of tutorials tend to omit that the MPC 60 actually quantized everything no matter what due to a poor MIDI resolution of 96PPQN AND that this machine was actually unable to play events simultaneously, they had to be played sequentially. Last but not least, the midi clock of the MPC wasn’t linear and had a slight non-linear drift over time. All this leads to a feel you can’t quite emulate. In terms of technique, Dilla used a bunch of them. There is a book detailing most of these techniques, I recommend it to anyone who is a fan, it’s the result of a big work of interviews with people who actually worked with Dilla.

I started back in 1997 with a very early version of FL and now my 18 y/o son has started making beats and inspired me to get back into it. Your videos have been sooooo helpful. I know this might be corny but wondering if some of you would be willing to take requests of samples I want to hear flipped properly, some samples I couldnt flip n dying to hear a proper beat with some of them... For instance there is no good ocarina of time beats, all of them sound soft on youtube, need that dark grimey boombap vibe with certain samples, either I pick the wrong samples or I just can't make them sound dope etc.... It might be hit n miss with some of my sample requests but I feel like you dudes can flip them properly, let me know if you down for a challenge etc... 🔥
