I have actually a very cheap trick for oldschool grimy sound, that I copied off of a very old RZA interview: I got a $20 old casette deck on auction. route your interface into the input, crank up the recording volume until it fits your taste and get to recording that sweet real saturation, crackle etc. then re-record that into the DAW they still produce new cassette tapes (i got 5 for like 10-15 off of bezos') - cheaper than RC20 (admittedly I already have an interface) and the sound is (to my ears) way warmer / smoother.
I have a tape deck for the same reason!! Hahaha. Not from RZA but to achieve that sound.
@@theycallmeheat in addition you can take a new tape and just record with high level on the entire tape a couple times, magnetic bands degrade the more they are recorded and played back. so the effect even gets stronger with time

GREAT video!! Not sure if you covered this in other videos, but have you tried Inphonik's RX1200 and RX950 yet?? Both are MUST HAVES! The 1200 is LITERALLY an SP-1200 sound wise. I owned one from 1994 to 2001 and honestly can't tell the difference. And I use the 950 on ALL my beats. It makes any plugin you're using from drums or samples sound like it's coming out of an Akai S950...so GOOD 🔥
I have not. But I do have some plugins that make your beats like the sp12 itself blue I can’t think of the company off top.

Might as well buy the new Rossom SP1200 for $4000 vs a vintage one. I find alot of stuff in Reason 12 has way to make nice Boom Bap.

I'm a Reason Guy, and I think Reason 12 with some free plugins and sounds from Native Instruments, and Akai and Arturia, you will have more then enough to make some dope shxx. Reasons great for Boombap Hiphop because it comes with hundreds of classic drum breaks that you can chop up.

Such a great plugin. It doesn’t have a limiter on it like the Transient Master from Native Instruments though.
When you are mixing, do you individually do your drugs or did you just drum bus?
both, sometimes I process each drum sound separately and throw them in a bus later for added texture like tape or the L2 by Waves
Cymatics makes a free plugin similar to RC-20, just a tip for those of us that are broke…😂🤣🤷🏾♂️🙋🏾♂️🎧🎵🎶🎧
