Glad you like the edges! Probably one of the most important but under appreciated aspects to a good painting . Please subscribe and join my mailing list at my website.

Generally speaking, yes, hard pastels take up less tooth and the soft pastels paint over them easily. However, I have no problem leaving some of the hard pastel uncovered. Hard pastels can also work well for glazing over large areas to make subtle changes in hue and value. They are also good for blending instead of using your finger. The hard pastel will blend colors and values with out loosing the pastel texture.

I use NuArt Pastels by Prismacolor primarily. There may be some light fastness issues with some colors but I haven't noticed any. Also, while I use the hard pastels for much of the painting esp. laying in the big shapes and establishing basic values/hues, most of it is covered with soft pastels by the end of the painting.

For this particular painting I used Kitty Wallis Pro grade sanded paper. That not being available anymore, I use UArt or Premier sanded 400 grit. Thanks for your questions. Hope this helps.

Derick, I should add that the Wallis paper was Belgian Mist. Premier comes in a comparable tone of Italian Clay. UArt is off-white and must be hand toned to get to a 50% tone.

Thanks for asking. The paper was 20x16, Kitty Wallis Professional Belgian Mist sanded paper which is no longer available, unfortunately. It is equivalent to 400 grit Premiere Italian Clay sanded paper or 400 grit UArt sanded paper.
