Welcome to Lancaster Hi-Fi: Vintage audio gear and plenty of music! Most of my videos are about repair, restoration, and modification of audio gear and generally include music sound clips, but I've got a few videos focussed solely on the music. I work mainly on amplifiers, receivers, preamplifiers, turntables, and speakers. I've built several resto/mod tube amps and have more in the works, but I love my solid state gear as well.

Pioneer SX 828 Service With DeOxIT Takes Weeks to Work?
Hello Lancaster HiFi, I simulate and build tube amps. To the topic of negative feedback and single ended triode circuit: it depends on the details. Detail one: the Ri of the output triode or pentode in triode circuit. Lower Ri is better. Detail two: the tubes in front of the output tube. Triode or pentode, which tube, which working point. If you do everything right, you need no negative feedback. And yes, you can mask errors with negative feedback. I am happy with low Ri pentode in triode circuit without nfb as single ended and push-pull amp. As you learned by yourself: don't switch the running amp from pentode to triode. And try the ultra-linear mode. This is output power level wise between pentode and triode and sound wise more triode then pentode. Have fun!
that sounds incredible
late here. buying used is obviously a big gamble. Ya might not get a week use where a new model will at least work ... pretty well to me even a $ 200 receiver like Yamaha has 80 + w /ch and a decent set of connections. to me the early / mid 70's were the peak ( I'm 70 + ) but I never had a stereo amp last more than 7 or 8 years - including decent brands like Pioneer, Carver , NAD , Sony. currently an Outlaw - looks great ( to me ) excel perf ( stereophile , others) 100 w + , great connections ..... only issue is reliability , it's only 1 1/2 years old , zero issues so far. $ 1000. not bad by ' audiophiles - always spend more' logic. KEF meta 50 spks etc.
I can’t believe the companies continue to make ugly stereo systems and the truth is they are on their way out for this blue tooth stuff but I much preferred the old way of the entire music experience CDS was as far as it should’ve stayed
Thanks for being honest. I have a pioneer Black display and a pioneer silver and I keep them both on top of each other and just light them up never do I listen to the radio
I need the full video
yes tape salad was awsome thats why I prefer cd or minidisc
What model of amp is the one sitting behind you? Please. Looks like a Luxman
There's a preamp, which is a Phase Linear 4000, and to its right, a Sony X77ES. One of my tube power amps is on top of the preamp but blocked by my head.
What does the signal look like on the speaker terminals if you bypass the preamp and plug your signal directly into Main In? Seems like that would be an easy way to completely eliminate the main amp board from the troubleshooting equation.
I meant SX-737...mine is clean as a whistle, gud caps, cleaned the pots with Deoxit. Also own a SX-424 and SX-550 and a few Sansuis.
I has a '73 SX747...sounds great! Replaced with ceramic fuses and LED bulbs. But the warm glow from the face and real metal knobs is just pure magic...
What's the gorgeous amp briefly glimpsed in the background? Cheers.
"Those changes are permanent" Or are they?
I just bought a Thorens 160/moth ta3 tonearm from vinyl nirvana. I looked at an older table, but Dave refurbishes these and anyway I'm very excited.
There is a reason I have shied away from cassettes in my resurgent audio hobby. You have nailed it. Slàinte Mhath!!
I have an SX 828 I bought it when I was in the service so I’m partial to its sound What I heard from the SX828 is more reverb and the music was more punchy and dynamic whereas the Sansui was had a more even compressed sound. That said I like them both. Please direct me to places were I can get replacement light bulbs! My receivers pots and switch’s need lots of cleaning. The box was last sealed by Pioneer 50yrs ago😀
hell yea you did!
How do I get started building this sort of stuff?
Old console (tube) amps are good for beginners. Magnavox tube consoles are especially good because there's so much information on the web (esp. audiokarma.org) about modifying amplifiers for standalone use.
Great video and thank you for sharing the memories.
Sorry can you go straight to the work instead of explaining everything under the sun?
If you do want to listen to radio, HD Radio is commonly available and much improved. So you still don't want a vintage FM Tuner regardless unless the baseball game or news is the content. However, way back on a Luxman receiver I recorded a live concert done well and definitely not the difference you heard from the Boston Album (I have that).
Rubbish My CD player (Denon DCD 700AE) makes no noise when playing CD's, cheap CD players do but that's why there cheap.
The Pioneer sounds much better it has a punch in bass over the yamaha
It’s a matter of how we perceive the sound. You could have the best speakers and receivers and if are kind of hearing impaired you’re done.
I own a single-ended amp and l love it 😍
Single-ended for me
the rectifier will not fry ....
Im a...boomer... and have 25 videos and 32 cd players...and 2 closets of ...cds...! And one record player........in the closet...lol...!
Another Tube evangelist with lots of words going around and around in circles using words like Bollocks over and over. Tubes are great and so are Solid state amps. Try them all and enjoy your music dont get caught up in the this is the best mantra.
You had me at pursuing light and joy. You'd have made a Great Jedi. Sharing your channel with audio friends. Hopefully boost your potential.
The moody blues, brilliant choice!
I had a Marantz 4415 Quadradial with SQ decoder. I took very good care of it and had it serviced. I wish I still had it.
I don't see how a fully automatic turntable keeps you from dropping the record. But I am with you with at least some automatic features. Really, having salvaged and repaired several vintage turntables which I currently own: if I had to choose any set of features, all that I really need is a toned arm lifting lever that gently sets the needle down and auto-stop where the tone arm lifts at the end and the record stops. I have to get up and walk to the turntable to flip the record anyway. It only takes one second to move the tone arm out of the way to flip the record over. However, when the auto return functions stopped working on some of my turntables, It took a lot more work to get them going again and then I didn't even have the auto stop function until then. If turntable is left for a long time, if you were automatic features there are means that there are many fewer places where the lubrication has turned to glue. It's much easier to clean or two spots rather than an entire, complicated cam and lever system (I'll just so you don't have to spend the one second pushing the tone arm back before the next record). I totally agree with everything else you said though 🙂
Buy a good set and go away
you can stick your lossless files and streaming services I'll take vinyl or CD's every time , even cassette tapes. I do not want to be reliant on the almighty and pervasive computers and downloads for music, besides your download is only as good as the original recording which with older music means tape, yes you can tickle it with digital remastering but then it's not original is it? Now some do that's fine but I like something tangible, something I can hold in my grasp. I am of the older generation, did you guess?
What do you use to clean the record and stylus before play? Thank you.
For the record, carbon fiber brush. Makers often claim they're "antistatic"; ha! For the stylus, either the small brush that comes with the cartridge or stylus or a densely, finely bristled brush that I got back in the 80's. I also use a stylus cleaning solution sold by Audiotechnica. I got mine in the 80's, but they still sell it.
I built my amp to do well in both settings. I can switch from pentode to triode and apply negative feedback on the fly. I usullay find mysel using pentode with feedback 90% of the time. But when I sit down for some special jazz and vocal related stuff triode is where I go to. It sounds livelier then.
My experience is similar. I occasionally think to try out triode mode. I have to actually turn off the amp to make the switch because of the high DC voltage. I found out the hard way by quickly ruining a switch! I suppose I could also switch the feedback on the fly since the voltage is low, but I generally make the change with power off.
Hello sir , I truly agree with you and your regrets , after so many years had past and that cassette technology is dead, but like christian religion ( no pun intended, ) He will come back . many CZcams influentialist , they said, cassette decks will come back. believe me I have 35+ cassette deck - nakamichi - sony -pioneer- teac- sharp- JVC/ Victor , panasonic , AKAI and etc. I spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars to buy and ship it here in the US, the shipment itself is horribly expensive, all that you said is true " about the bad side of the cassette. " . I think I have an obsession to collect them , I have 50 different kinds of walkman cassette released only in Japan walkman. . I got them not working but I was able to change the gooey belts , now they're working, still I have to order the pinch roller because they hardened. . The reason I listen to your frustrations , is to convince me, myself and I, to stop buying cassette decks , aside from they're getting expensive . I can't event play ,them all . If you haven't seen it, Pls. Go To : czcams.com/video/BP99Pu9aOto/video.html . .....More power to your channel.
39 min...Slew Rate means how quickly an Amp changes Output Voltage in response to change in Input Voltage..Volts / Time
Yes, and I'm referring to slewing distortion, which is when the slew rate can't keep up with the frequency and amplitude of the input signal.
Unfortunately I did not understand any thing...can please simplify the info
I've done my best. I suggest you go to my source: _Valve_ _Amplifiers_ 3rd edition, by Morgan Jones. There's a whole chapter on preamps.
I would like a honest opinion. I am not an audiophile but I love the sound of vintage audio equipment. The problem is I cannot afford it. At least in the video I could hardly tell the difference. This Yamaha is discontinued but their later model 303BL is probably equivalent. Will I be wrong to buy the Yamaha.
Yamaha makes good stuff, and the variable loudness control is nice. It allows control over the perceived "fullness" of the sound. The modern units aren't very pretty, especially on the budget end, and the outer construction appears flimsy, but the innards are well built.
Radiators are more efficient than open fires but I know which I would rather sit in front of. Frequency response only matters when a b ing one against the other, our ears will eq the difference.
everytime hifi goes up in technology we go down in sound quality, Tubes to Transistors, Class A to Class D amps...is this true ?
so Horn speakers are High Sens.. so I lose Bass and must get a subwoofer to compensate and high sens. speakers will expose noisy components , so are you better off with lower sens. speakers ?
If you have an amp with enough power, then yes (all else being equal).
Streaming is convenient, but there's nothing about streaming that compares emotionally to watching the damped door of my cassette deck open, inserting a CD into the tray, or putting a record on the turntable. That's why the popularity of physical media is on the upswing. I've owned a handful of CD players, but my favorite is the NAD 5000 I bought new in (I think) 1990. It's still box stock, and it won't play SACDs or DVD Audio (I have a modified Samsung DVD-HD950 for that), but it sure does a nice job with basic CDs, and as a transport with my Audio Alchemy DDE v1.0, the music is damn near alive.
I purchased the Pioneer along with Altec Segovia speakers in 72, while stationed in Germany. Great memories.
My 1st receiver was the pioneer sx828 that I bought at Rex in 1974. Added a pair of micro acoustic speakers and nice Kenwood turntable. Nice starter stereo system . Excellent receiver
I have a lot of music on cassette, and if I want to listen to it I need a deck. Neither my Denon nor my Nakamichi has never eaten a tape.
why such small value filter caps in the power supply ?
If the capacitor adjacent to the rectifier is too big, the rectifier will fry. Tube rectifiers are less tolerant of big current spikes than solid state. That doesn't explain small values after the choke.
@@Lancaster_Hi-Fi no it would Not fry the tube rectifier. i routinely run a pair of 100uF/500V caps off the EZ-81 , for many years now,,,,, with no issues. You don't know the real reason , do you ?
Great video. Really enjoyed it.
