Omg Collin is saying what I'm thinking - isn't the point to sit and enjoy life? "You're weird. This is a farm." Love seeing how it's coming together!! ❤
Lmao IM the one who said to sit and enjoy life and he told ME to get to work 🤣
Great work, Bri! Where is your allotment located in Ottawa? What can still be planted this late in the season (today is August 18)?
I'm at one of the city allotments! And you can still plant lettuce, radish, spinach and kale (since you can harvest the leaves when they're small), peas! A lot of the 10 I listed in my last video of what to plant in August still applies! Especially if you have row covers
very nice video thank you mam nice video about nature beauty i always watch your video i love it my nature is very beautiful
My deer guests prefer leaves to flowers.
How kind of you to feed the deer!! 🤣
I like your videos. First you tell your zone and where you are. I’m in zone 4b New Brunswick so I know right off you garden in the same context I do. Also, your videos are short and to the point. No irrelevant chatter. Thank you.
oh thank you very much for the feedback and for watching!
Fantastic video. Thanks. New subscriber
Oh thank you so much for the kind words!
How to grow lettuce from seed to harvest and then to seed again. 😊
Haha always! It's such a cool part of growing flowers and veg!
You'll never get them all and the one that has the bacterial wilt in it will 100% be the one you miss lol😅
Thanks for the tips I'm in BC and we are going through a heat wave and drought. A question about straw mulch. Have you had any issues with broad leaf herbicides (like Grazon) in your local straw?
I actually used switchgrass as mulch, I found a place selling it and it's a native perennial that they don't do any spraying on. But I'd 100% ask any local sellers if they're spraying cause of course you don't want to use that on an organic backyard garden
Great tips, Bri, thanks! Where to you get the straw, here, in Ottawa?
I got it from Strathmere! It's actually switchgrass which their farmer started growing on the fields to try and be more sustainable.. they're like a spa or wedding venue? But also sold this grass in the spring
So hot here in Florida. Some of these tips apply here too. I’m constantly moving plants in the summer.
I bet it's hot there! I can't handle over 100F.. no thanks don't know how you do it lol
It’s best those two keep the relationship “long distance “. The bird prefers it that way. ~R.M.
Finally, a CZcams gardening channel in my area! Thank you! Subscribed.
Oh so glad to hear this! Thank you!
I would direct sow if the Texas sun wouldn’t roast my seedlings to a crisp.
Oh yes 100%! If it's hot, direct sowing is near impossible!!
Loved this & Great teamwork!! Can't believe this was your first hot air balloon sighting LOL
Ha! We even went to Turkey where they fly hot air balloons and we didn't see any!!
all of my dill bolted this summer....didnt think about planting again as a fall crop. first thing in the morning replant time.........
Fall dill grows SO strong!! Hopefully you get enough to even dry for winter!
Great videos girl, thank you
I always plant these and love these beautiful flower, and tasty
Yes, they are soo beautiful. The deep pink ones are my fav right now
Thank you, sounds great I will especially sow dill spinach kale and cilantro. Yes for sure I noticed that spinach and dill, cilantro seem to bolt in the summer, before even having any
Fall harvests are so much better! I hope you get amazing harvests
Your seed organizer is awesome! Great idea gal!
Oh thanks! It's so useful for holding everything, it's a photo organizer!
So much progress!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Checks fake watch!! 😂😂
🤭 I love seeing it back in editing and being like.. "nice Bri...."
Was the part of the fence taken the new you added or the original that was there when you got the lot?
The original fence that was there, it was the longest side of my plot, 50 feet of fencing and I bought 2 25ft rolls to finish it off 😩
@@urbangardeningcanada 😞That's too bad. I wonder if the people who had the allotment before you put it in and decided to come back and retrieve it. I hope you find an answer. :)
I may have done a little bit of over kill 😅 Went to check on the garden this morning, and found a ton. I sprayed the plant with a mixture of water, diatomaceous earth, spearmint extract, chilli powder, and a teaspoon of dish soap 😅. Plants have been doing so well, I kind of freaked out 😂 Praying it'll work 🤞🏼
Good video. I like to prune off any lower leaves with-in a foot of the ground.
Thank you! And yes, I'm the same, having that cleaned up stem at the bottom really helps the plant and the garden cleanliness!
I use a little battery powered car vacuum cleaner. Works for a bunch of bugs and makes it super easy and quick!
Hey this was a well made video! And you are nice to listen to. Keep going, I can see your channel growing in the near future! 😃
Oh thank you so much for the nice words!!! I appreciate this so much!
I catch them with my hands or if I can't reach they get the insecticidal soap
In our future garden I will plant these - I'm looking forward to pickling the seeds.
OMG i love your urban gardening Canada hat, such a cute idea
This is really cool! Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching and supporting me!!
Nasturtiums are so versatile, I love them. Growing up we never planted them to eat, they were interplanted with the squash as they seemed to repel cucumber beetles (and they added a touch of color). The downside was there was always so much yellow squash and zucchini, we couldn't give away all the excess.
Love this video!! Thanks for the tips!
Nice. Thanks for sharing my friend ❤❤❤
Thank you for this information!!
I'm so glad you found it helpful 😊
Leaf miners, and they are a vine, so not easy in pots.
Just came across your channel. Its nice to get advice that is Canadian specific although I absorb information from all different locations.
Hi! Yes! Canadian garden advice seems to be very few and far between so I'm hoping to fill that gap 🙂 I appreciate your thoughts!
i grow them for all the reasons you mention. i also love it that they repel Squash bugs, cucumber beetles, striped pumpkin beetles, woolly aphids. and attract predatory wasps. they are excellent companions for Most vegetables, especially brassica (cabbage, broccoli, et al.), cucurbits (cucumbers, melons, squash) and solanum (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, etc.)
Wow mine have never repelled any of those bugs you listed! I sure with they did cause the cucumber beetle and vine borer are not nice!!
@@urbangardeningcanada by itself it will not eliminate them but it does repel. i grow many repelling plants in my little orchard and combined, the result is amazing. the key is diversity. also location makes a big difference. i setup my food forest as a wildlife habitat. in fact it is certified as such. in a complex eco system no one species will have impact, it is the web of organisms that lead to a balanced system. that is what we have to work on. i got into this in the 70's so it is nothing new. the best way to introduce diversity is to buy seeds off season when there are sales. some plants will attract good bugs. some deter bad bugs. the key is diversity at all levels. no mono-culture. start with the soil. build your soil every day. strong soil means strong plants which will repel bugs by themselves. add to that plants that aid, you will create an eco-system that minimizes loss. that said, 20% of what i grow is for the wildlife. i do not lose to the bad bugs though. i harvest and feed the deer, birds, etc.
Great video. So much information. Going to try them next year.
Depending where you're located you could still grow them now! They can handle cool fall temperatures
@@urbangardeningcanada great 😃 thank you so much 😁
Nice one 🎉
Your new subscbr , nice sharing , stay conected
WoW thats a big plot!! Way to go!
The cucumber beetles have arrived somewhat north of you. Really nasty last year. Some as yet unidentified type just finished attacking the grape vines. No Japanese beetles though. I still a few holes in the garden. Looks like I'll get on that tomorrow. :)
You had pests on your grape vines? Could it be Japanese beetles? Glad you have some spots to direct sow!!
@@urbangardeningcanada Did I ever, and an image search turned up no positive ID. The cucumber beetles not as gonzo as last year, so far. Very rich soil probably helps. It's almost all organic cow manure, chicken and horse manure, with a bit of old wood chip and yellow soil (at least two of the four kinds). The garden is probably over 5,000 sq ft. Lotsa fun. :)
as soon as i heard you say that cucumber beetles were no longer in season by the time your cucumbers flowered i sprinted to direct sow the rest of my seeds along with some dill 🥲
Aren't cucumber beetles just the worst! Never hurts to have backup plants 🤞🏼
Thank you for the video! Do you use a heat-tolerant lettuce?
I actually haven't gotten any seeds yet but really should. I might have Little Gem or Rouge D'hiver in my collection but otherwise might try those varieties out!
i’m loving this series so far! i’ve never had an allotment so i feel like i’m on this new journey with you 🤗
Oh yay! Thanks for watching and following along!
Woooo first comment lol…. I would till the ground it will be so much easier to rake and get it clean. It’s what I did with my garden and my space was in much worse condition. For the garden beds I would do the short length and that’s just based on preference I think!? This looks like fun and I’m excited to follow along 🤩🤩🤩
Thanks for your thoughts!! I've seen a few others at the allotment who are shovelling/pick axing the space lol and I'm like.. doooo iiii want to do that kind of labour??
So informative! Thank you!! 🙏🏻
Can’t wait to make these - I’ve made your pickled beans which I absolutely love!
I can’t wait to follow along! I love a good before and after 🙌🏻
