Behind the Clock (GB 1943) Anson Dyer Animation
Anson Dyer (1876-1962) was a major figure in British animation for over thirty years, from the First World War to the late 1940s. Here's an advertising film he made for Kelloggs Cereals, showing you the benefits of having a good breakfast every day. You'll note that you're not told you're watching an advert until the very last minute. The lovely unfaded colour is dye transfer Technicolor.

Settle in with a nice box of Wizzo Chocolates. Here's a quirky promotional film from the Fifties. Make sure to watch past the fairly dry introduction and then you'll see the benefits of varied electric lighting demonstrated via the medium of dance (yes, really). The irascible commentator here is Gilbert Harding, a popular TV face of the time, whose Waldo Lydecker-esque demeanour earned him the description "The Bilious Bachelor of Broadcasti...

I like to think that I have a special affinity with the Cinema Museum because in the 1950s I was a Saturday-afternoon-at-the-movies, film-mad kid in Aberdeen, where much of the basis of the Museum collection originated. Not only that, but many of the films I saw would actually have been shown by Ron Grant, who was a projectionist in the city at the time. You might say he has a lot to answer for, but my childhood was cinema heaven, and I loved every one of Aberdeen’s picture houses. Ron saved as much as he could; tragically the rest was lost forever, thrown into Aberdeen’s Rubislaw Quarry. This touching and perceptive film clearly shows how the impressive collection now has items from far and wide since its early days. Francesco Zavattari’s evocative images and Neil Brand’s music, with its flavour of Cinema Paradiso swept me back over fifty years; a reminder that nostalgia is a hugely powerful and important part of cinema history. Congratulations to everyone involved in the making of The Love Letter. PLEASE sign the petition if you haven't already done so!
