Number 11: “The Hater” The Hater is known for looking down their nose at everyone else in the audition room. The Hater sees themselves as above the other actors, and comes up with dehumanizing nicknames for them . The Hater is prone to judgement and cynicism. Often, The Hater is annoyed by other people existing. If you are over prepared, under prepared, breathing too loudly, stretching, or even being too friendly, you are sure to annoy The Hater.

Such great recollections - thank you both! On my first West End audition I was auditioning for West Ends biggest casting director. I was asked to prepare a pop songs and I decided to sing one of my all time favorite songs 'New York State of Mind' - I knew this so well and long before I became an actor - this was was in my very core. I have just been called and as I am walking up the stairs, a friend of mine was coming down and he is a tad upset. He said to me in passing "if he picks up his phone he doesn't like you" this was said with some venom. Well, I walked in knowing I was going to do a great job. I greeted the two auditors and walked over to the accompanist and told him what I was going to sing. I had marked everything well - he said great. I gave him the tempo. I walked over to my spot and I did my slate. Just as I was finishing my slate this guy picked up his phone. The music started and I completely forgot the opening line of the song. I tried again but nothing. I haven't been asked back since. A very small part of me wants to blame him, because I feel what he did was rude and unprofessional. Ultimately, however, it is my fault for not doing what I went in to do. WE learn from these moment.

I was 51 when my wife heard me sing for the first time, this was in 2012 - we had been together nearly 29 years at the time, and I still sing. My career was going well and then Covid came. I haven't acted since, but I still sing and I still work on my rep - A LOT! I adore performing.

Hi guys. I joined Equity after a National NU tour. I've been union since last year. Since that time, I've gotten one union staged reading...that's it. I've paid my bills nannying. I was excited to actually audition for Bway shows, until I'd see those shows advertised months later starring some Hollywood celebrity in the role(s) I auditioned for. I realize now that when I joined the union, though I'd be in the room more, it was so unlikely that I'd get cast because I was competing with celebrities that would sell tickets. Very disheartening and...enlightening. I used to get regularly called back as an NU actor. In a full year of Equity auditions, I've not gotten one Equity callback. Again, very disheartening; so much so, that I've considered returning to a NU status so that I could audition for things i'm interested in--including tours--that I feel like I'd have an actual shot at. So yes, I get in the rooms, yes, I get seen, but that's sort of what my dues currently pay for :/ Your thoughts/feedback?

As a nonunion actor myself, I gotta say, this is true. Since I live in North Carolina, which is a right to work state, not being part of the union allows me to have a lot of freedom, and it's not just broadway shows. There's a lot of anime dubs, video games, commercials, and indie films that are nonunion. Without a SAG card, I get to work in smaller, independent works like student films and B-movies. Lots of benefits of being nonunion.

“This is a performance not an evaluation” I think has single-handedly cured all my audition nerves 😂 I was always so fkn TERRIFIED of my song rep classes and exams in university and I feel like every audition I’ve been to since then I’ve been associating with that in my mind but that’s so fkn true: it’s not an evaluation. It’s not an assessment. It’s just a performance.

Could you please help me with the Math as I seem to be not that good, How to count the right bar quantity if we have 12/8 or 6/8? It is more common with jazz but happened to my audition songs :( So, the only way, I see now is just to put the timer on and measure how much suits in 90 sec.

Excellent video. One thing I've found VERY effective when asked for a 2nd song is to give them two choices: "I have Don't Be the Bunny from Urinetown, and My Name from Oliver! Which would you like?" I swear, the casting staff get excited over having a choice, and that puts them in a good mood. "Oh, do Don't Be the Bunny!"
