Brutal to watch. I lost 40 pounds after my deployment from depression. I barely weighed 160 when I first got home. I couldn't eat or sleep for months. I started smoking weed, and my appetite came back and I was able to actually sleep without vivid nightmares. I remember riding in the truck with my dad after I started putting weight back on and looking normal/healthy and he criticized me about using cannabis. He told me I "just need to smile more." I can't remember a more lonely memory. Having my father criticize me for finding help after going to war, and just telling me to suck it up, when he had never been to war himself. I couldn't believe somebody was being critical of the singular thing that was helping me stay alive, but I also understood that my family had a specific code that was supposed to be followed. Brutal to experience.
