It's been mentioned in the comments (by you and others) but Redemption CCG used banding as a central mechanic in battle. The game is still alive today with a new set coming out and National tournament yearly. Banding is still popular and shapes the meta with decks making it a point to stop Banding as their main strategy. Lmk if you want some more information im happy to share as an active player.

I see a lot of issues. I don’t think the life decking is a problem. It’s more of how it’s missing a lot of player interaction like removal. I saw a couple but looks like each color will need removal to stay relevant.

Personally I don't know if I like this solution to resources. It feels interesting, don't be me wrong, but as a basic system is sure fire to result in these kinds of "well I dunno. I can't do anything." matches. Personally it feels like someone who played Yugioh only studied Magic and Lo5R for a very brief amount of time and decided to superficially combine Lo5R's second deck for resources with Magic's 20 Health life point system and just mash that into Yugioh to make Yugioh style monsters a little more balanced, with Pokémon/Digimon adjacent art of course. Here's the issue: To make a game feel like a forward momentum progression you need to build up resources continuously. Health is a dwindling resource that counts you down to the end of line. Spending life points as resources is an interesting gimmick for a specialty deck that's meant to flow inverted which is also why people tend to flavor this as a necrotic style of play, but as a base game where you're summoning cutesy Pokémon-like spirits from the elements of nature? No, now you've failed to understand that cute Pokémon getting stronger is meant to feel like getting a baby animal and raising it to adulthood. The theme horrendously clashes with the gameplay if the mechanics don't enforce forward momentum. So the mechanics slow forward momentum which is important while also theme clashing with visuals that also imply forward momentum. It's not a strong juxtaposition but a contradiction. Everything else in the game seems to be small and on a card by card basis which could be up to the draft style of these particular matches. Like how there doesn't seem to be a board wipe. I kept waiting for "Earthquake" as you guys kept mentioning it, and then it turned out to be a "destroy target creature" card instead of a board wipe, which is weird anyway. An Earthquake specifically harms everything for miles. How is that a targeted card? Maybe that could have been called "Shockwave" to suit the effect better, or even just "Fissure" since Yugioh doesn't own rights to that name. That's not how copyright works. But otherwise a "Ground Crack" or "Grand Slam" or something would have worked with that art and effect better than "Earthquake". But like I said, these are all specific mistakes with individual cards and could have been the result of the way the players played as a draft instead of buying premade decks. I didn't get a proper view of intended card set design this way since this wasn't a video about that. All told, I'm skipping this game. It feels very derivative without proper game design guidance. Looks cool and would likely be fun to play a couple of times, but the reason I can't bite on this one is that I'm a long term kind of card game player where I like to dive deep, and the base game mechanics will make that troublesome. More of a fun casual card game, IMO, almost like a board game.

I remember getting this cause I had a book of the 1st Digimon game and cut out all the cards so I could play by myself XD. When I found this set in the store I bought 2 decks so I could play with my friend for like 6 months. I feel like this is ideal for a fanmade remaster/rebalance.

Can you do a video about Life decking? I feel like things like Digimon and Final Fantasy do it and whileneither is huge, digimon isn't super small anymore from what ive seen. I also just love life decking and want more analysis 😅

This video kind of had a disaster in filming and is so late that the second set of Elestrals is out now - OOPS! We had filmed whole pack opening, card evaluation, and deck profiles part of the video but my friend's POV went out of focus after the first half so I had to cut all of that. Maybe the video better paced just getting into the games instead of having 10 minutes of pack opening at the beginning. Idk - I'll have to keep messing with the format.
