    This is a very elegant roll, but it seems to require the paddler to set up while still upright and then deliberately capsize. What circumstances might a sea kayaker encounter that would make this roll the best choice of recovery method? I mean, when is this method more useful/effective than any other roll?

    I am a greenland paddler. its very similar to a reverse sweep but palms down and your not so face down in a reverse sweep, it is different but not a huge difference. , now your palms are up to use powerface of euro blade. I did it today everything the same except palms down. . Great video with underwater part really shows it.

    The photography here was very helpful, well done! One thing that confuses me in this lesson is that the roll is the 'back deck roll' in which you end up leaning toward the forward deck. I have seen a roll with the same name demonstrated where the paddler does not sweep forward and end up leaning forward, but instead comes up on the back deck. I guess it works either way. Also, if you are not securely attached to your kayak at the feet, knees, thighs, hips, & buttocks you may corkscrew yourself right out of your seat.

ONE METHOD ENABLES YOU TO GET A READING ANYTIME YOU WANT (SAY AT INTERVALS OF 10 SECONDS) AND THE OTHER METHOD GIVES YOU A READING WETHER YOU WANT IT OR NOT (BATTERY DRAINING, BUT I PREFER THIS METHOD)(I USUALLY GET SIGNALS EVERY 0.9 SECONDS USING SECOND METHOD)

    This isn't nearly as effective as a bow rudder and it eats forward momentum like a hungry shark, so why promote it as a "great turning stroke for sea kayakers to learn"?

  • @woofna1948
    @woofna1948 Před 3 lety

    Why not just do a bow rudder. It's more efficient and precise, and you don't lose as much speed. And yeah, 1/3 of the video was an ad.

    I'm new to kayaks and have a 2 person inflatable. It really pushes you to paddle correctly as it really, really reacts to bad paddling. It seems to have a lot of side to side as it's only 10 feet long, and a missed stroke will have you pointed the wrong direction quickly which completely messes up the rhythm. I got mine for long distance paddling bit I practice spirited paddling too to test how well my muscle memory is working. So far I can paddle quickly but I'll have several errors in a short amount of time. It's gets me going but with a lot of wasted energy. It also sits up higher in the water than a hardshell so not getting the paddle all the way in the water is glaringly obvious too. It's light going to pick up an ice chest you think is loaded down only to find it's empty as you try to forcefully lift it. I do love how well it cruises with little effort to keep it going, not such a fan of it wanting to turn toward the direction of the wind as soon as I stop paddling though. I can't imagine how bad it would be without the fin (skeg?) On the bottom.

    The current teaching is to attach to the casualties deckline. I personally don't hold with it. I believe that the deckline is sacred and should not be used for anything other than securing equipment carried on deck and as a line to hold when in a rescue situation, either as a casualty or as a rescuer emptying a casualties boat. I've been told that the deckline is a stronger tow-point than the toggle rope but I've yet to see anyone carrying a loaded sea kayak by the decklines rather than the toggle, so how can it be? If a toggle-line were to fail in a tow situation the deckline could be used as backup. If a deckline were used first and was to fail or loosen, there could be holes through the fittings and kit loose in the water. The method demo'd on this is my choice. ⚓ 🙂

    • @carlandlindakuhnen8750
      @carlandlindakuhnen8750 Před 3 lety

      A problem with toggle lines is that they are constantly moving and wearing where they contact the boat. Some people tie down their bow and/or stern using the toggle line (I don't). Some people carry their boat using the toggle lines (I don't). Toggles constantly sway in the wind while paddling and driving. All of these things tend to wear out the toggle lines and leave them subject to breaking under stress. Our club (Houston Association of Sea Kayakers) has had at least two incidents of toggle lines breaking while a swimmer was holding them, resulting in separation of the swimmer from his boat. We clip tow lines under one deck line (not two) so that if a deck fitting fails under stress, the carabiner is still attached to the line and all the other deck fittings. We use toggles only as hand holds for a swimmer and we try to inspect them regularly.

  • @Theileflottante
    @Theileflottante Před 5 lety

    I've learned that you never attach the towing line to the toggle, but to the bowlines. More secure!
