why do you feel the need to put your kayak "on edge"? Is it to reduce drag? It seems to me that it is an invitation to tip over.....
It's very important for general handling, when you lean to one side it's much easier to turn, at least with long sea kayaks. It's also a good way to test your kayak stability, and there are a few different maneuvers that use this movement. Also the same muscles are used to roll !
I remember the first time I used a sea kayak, the only time I had an instructor with me, he already explained that to me.
That said after a few years of sea kayaking I still can't find my balance on the edge with my seayak, 56 cm beam, except when bracing with my paddle !
