Interview Mr Kurt Oliver, Impact of Station Strangler on Mitchell’s Plain Community
zhlédnutí 149Před dnem
In those few moments when a serial killer looks down at the body of the victim he has just killed, he thinks his dirty little secret will forever be lost in the abyss. Yet when we find the body, the deeds of a #serialkiller ripples through a whole community, not just the family of the victim. In this interview Mr Kurt Oliver, son of the detective of the 1994 Station Strangler investigation, del...
Up And Coming Serial Killers

Detectives can be commended for investigating and arresting serial killers, but in some cases, communities were being dismally failed by the system and innocent people were brutally killed. These deaths could have been prevented, had the killers not been considered too young! #truecrimecommunity #serialkillerdocumentary
Do Serial Killers Return To The Scene Of The Crime?
zhlédnutí 145Před 21 dnem
The aphorism that a criminal always ‘returns to a crime scene’ features in literature in Dostoyevski’s Crime and Punishment of 1866, Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet 1887 and in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Links 1923. Do serial killers return to their crime scenes? Yes, in my experience, they do for various different motives, and so we entrapped one in 1999. #serialkillerdocumentary ...
History Repeats Itself With South African Serial Killers

Revisiting historical South African serial killer cases, it seems as if someone discovered the script of an old case and re-enacted it out 50 - 60 years later. Episode 6 of the television series Catch me a Killer, is about the Cape Town Prostitute killer which I profiled in 1996 and it is uncanny how many similarities there are between this case and the case of Cornelius Burger that occurred 60...

Episode 4 of the television series Catch me a Killer, based upon my book, depicts the investigation of Moses Sithole, dubbed the Atteridgeville serial killer, whom I profiled in 1995. But Moses was not the only one to claim this title. Atteridgeville unfortunately has been tainted with the reputation of being a playing field for serial killers.

Do serial killers want to be caught?

Micki, I have just written a book called: Crimes Against Children South Africa. I have placed it on Amazon but also submitted it to a publisher for publishing. It is a deep research study on the terrible atrocities done to children spanning the last 2 decades in SA. The book is aimed at police, criminologists, social workers, counsellors, childhood developers, adoptees, etc. I was wondering if you could endorse the book? Author: Rev. Dr. Val Hamann (PhD)

It would be interesting to hear about other multiple murderers who may not be considered to be serial killers, and what differentiates them from serial killers. There is one South African case that particularly interests me, that of Jan Abraham Christoffel Nel. I was in the army with him, living in the same 4-person room as he did for several months in 1983. He struck me as not being very intelligent and had a tendency to become violent when angered. Our service ended in December 1983 and in November 1984 at a disco at the Postmasburg showgrounds he attacked two teenage girls, raping both and killing one. The other was able to escape. He was imprisoned (not sure of the sentence) and released after 12 years or so. He went on to rape and murder one young woman, murder a second and attempt to murder a third. I don't know what the outcome of his second trial was and have been unable to find any information about him on the Internet other than a report from the Rapport newspaper dated 22 August 1999 that I saved several years ago and can no longer find. It said he he would be sentenced on 26 and 27 August after hearing psychiatric evidence and evidence on mitigating and extenuating circumstances.

Hi Micki, I am a big fan of Catch me a Killer. Being a psychologist myself (not forensic, mind you :-) I am fascinated by how you managed to show the value of your expertise in a time, period and working environment that was dominated by rationality, causation and focussed only on the tangible. You really did a great job. And imagine my surprise, currently working on a project in which I was introduced to Power and Force, that I find you also talking about this. I do notice it's still a bit of a controversial topic where spiritual (non-psychologist) people tend to take it as a 'scientific proof' and non-spiritual people write it off as being vague, unmeasurabe and even in the same category as religion. And psychologists try to look at all sides to find out and research what elements of reliable practical application it contains. So I have a few questions, if you would indulge me. First, how have you integrated the energy theories into your work as a forensic psychologist? How about explaining a 'gut feeling' in a courtroom in a way that a judge and/or jury is convinced of the scientific validity of the concept? Second, do you also work with a comparable theoretical framework of color psychology? I'm thinking spiral dynamics and Ken Wilber's Integral Theory? And last, do you have any thoughts on how to apply/detect these energy/colour/frequency indicators in an online environment? I'm still figuring out whether or not to go down the path of energy-related concepts since the actual project I'm working on has to be 'evidence-based' en here in the Netherlands people tend to be overly 'down to earth' and not open to stuff they can't (or haven't learned to) evaluate through sensory perception.... I hope you can find time to answer my questions, would be greatly appreciated! And again, congratulations of a great series about you. Must be very special.
