2022 Vallejo Race, "Psycho Tiller" JPK 1080
25 Mile sailboat race from San Francisco to Vallejo. This year our starts seem to be like kryptonite for us and unfortunately that trend continued this race!
The music seems to be a polarizing issue with past videos, some people really like it and some really dislike it. In an effort to please all the people all the time I'll including a link to an unlisted version without music. Keep in mind with the video speed at 2x and the radio in the background it's going to sound like a bunch of chipmunks on meth. No music link: czcams.com/video/DI61spTci-k/video.html

One of the foredeck crew did come back shortly after the time point you mentioned but he had to go back up to foredeck to douse because we couldn't hold the kite pointing that high. was that your A4 on the downwind? do you think you could have carried the A2 or was it out of range for that sail? just curious if it would have kept you in closer contact with the FT.

    • @PsychoTillerSailing
      @PsychoTillerSailing Před rokem

      Yes, that's the A4. For sure we could have used the A2 for most of the downwind leg except for inside the bay after passing under the GG bridge. Our A4 is the same size as the A2, just a little flatter shape and heavier material. So although we lose some speed in lighter wind I'm not entirely sure how significant that loss is as long as it's at least 10-12+ TWS. The loss of speed would have to be great enough to offset slowing down for a sail change later. These are always tricky races crossing under the GG and coming back into the bay. Even if it's near drifting conditions outside the Golden Gate it's always 20-30+ inside. So it's often a choice of either carrying the A4 in lighter air and not having to slow down to change sails before the bridge, slow down for a sail change before the GG, or hold the A2 inside the GG and risk blowing it up when the heavy winds come. From past experience of watching one of my brand new spinnakers completely explode crossing under the gate after getting hit with a 40 knot gust I tend to be very conservative on sail selection. When winds are light enough where just keeping the kite full is an issue then for sure the lighter A2 is a better choice, even if it means a sail change later. Under normal conditions and on longer legs our A2 is typically good up to about 18-20 TWS. That's my approach for coming into the bay, I'm sure others have different ideas and are more adventurous with their kites than I am! And maybe I'm completely wrong and should be doing more sail changes anyway. The other option is of course doing spinnaker peels but that sort of adds another level of complexity in some ways. Currently the running rigging isn't entirely set up for peels, one of those projects I've always meant to do just haven't done yet. Thanks for the question and watching our video!

    • @PsychoTillerSailing
      @PsychoTillerSailing Před 2 lety

      With one design boats like the J/109 you're limited to a specific size kite. Some of the kites were designed to have the tack line out in order to have a wider and deeper kite. With a kite tight at the tack you'd give up some width and/or depth to stay in the same class legal Sq meter size. Having said all that, this was about 5 years ago, sail design and even class rules may have changed since we had a J/109. On our current boat the tack stays tight at the pole.

    you always jibe the main by simply swinging it over. on my boat (Beneteau First 36.7 ) the main is always heavily loaded and it's impossible to swing it unless in very light conditions, I always had to sheet in and then turn the wheel. is your main somehow smaller ?

    • @PsychoTillerSailing
      @PsychoTillerSailing Před 2 lety

      If you pull too early on the main it will definitely be loaded up too much. You just have to wait until the boat is turned enough to unload the main. We prefer throwing it across because it's quicker and less chance of the main loading up after the jibe and causing a broach but either technique works. Another one of those things where I'm not sure there's a general consensus.

  • @yangyang3175
    @yangyang3175 Před 2 lety

    it's great you managed to tack less than 90 degrees on the way out, most of the time my GPS track shows me tacking 120 degrees because of the current pushing me back into the bay.

  • @yangyang3175
    @yangyang3175 Před 2 lety

    At the end when you drop the asymmetrical Spinnaker, did the Bowman pull the tack line in or did you guys have an extra retrieval line?

    • @PsychoTillerSailing
      @PsychoTillerSailing Před 2 lety

      Edit: I just watched it again, I had forgotten this was one of the times we were experimenting with the umbilical retrieval line. We usually pull on the lazy sheet to get the kite in. Best case scenario is grab the middle of the foot and dousing from there but with a larger kite that's often hard to grab onto. Next best option is pulling in with the lazy sheet, then grabbing the foot and down from there. Some people use a retrieval line attached to the tack, blow the tack and bring it in from there. Another similar option is a retrieval line in the middle of the kite (aka umbilical line) which we used this race. We've experimented a little with a retrieval line but found having another line unnecessarily complicates things since the lazy sheet technique works well for us. A matter of personal preference more than anything, I'm sure many people really like using retrieval lines.

    • @PsychoTillerSailing
      @PsychoTillerSailing Před 2 lety

      One advantage to an umbilical line is (in theory) the kite douses from the middle so that the tack, head and clew should be sitting on top of the pile and ready to launch easily next time.

  • @yangyang3175
    @yangyang3175 Před 2 lety

    with the main fully up, are you not worried about the pressure on the rigging? last time I went down to Monterey, rode down on 30knots wind, so I reefed. if you are sailing upwind against 30 knots, I guess it would be impossible?

    • @PsychoTillerSailing
      @PsychoTillerSailing Před 2 lety

      I think the rigging should be fine in those conditions (as long as it's in good shape). The sails on the other hand take a lot of abuse in heavy winds. I suppose the sails act as sort of a safety valve for the rigging. The sails would most likely vaporize well before the rigging fails. If I remember correctly I think we ended up reefing eventually on that race, just wasn't caught on camera because it was dark by then. Depending on the boat, upwind in 30 knots without reefing is doable, just not very enjoyable or efficient. Thanks for commenting and for watching!

      @PsychoTillerSailing Před 2 lety

      Thank you for your suggestion, I appreciate your critique. There are a few various issues with obtaining usable, good quality sound from the GoPro which makes it not a great option without spending far too much time messing with the camera while racing. The majority of feedback I've received regarding the music has been very favorable but of course that will also depend on ones personal taste in music which is never going to be universal. I'm also completely willing to accept there will occasionally be times I mess up and put in a song everyone dislikes. That's just part of the creative process of an amateur making videos just for fun. There will undoubtedly be some that don't care for any of the music such as yourself. I certainly hope our videos are enjoyable to a wide audience but it's just not possible to make something everyone enjoys or appreciates. These videos are just for fun and we have never, nor will we ever make any money or ask for anything in return. So again I appreciate your opinion and I certainly hope many people enjoy the videos but I completely understand some people will not care for the music or other things we put in there. The good news is there are probably a million CZcams sailing videos so everyone should be able to find some that fits their taste!

    • @PsychoTillerSailing
      @PsychoTillerSailing Před 2 lety

      The top batten in the mainsail helps give the sail depth (concave horizontal sail shape). Sometimes in light winds the batten won't flip to the other side after a gybe or tack which results in a convex shape to the sail. Love your work. I sailed mainsheet on a similar sized Archambault 35 for 4 years. ( Moneypenny, R35 out of the RYCV in Melbourne ). We do almost exclusively windward-leeward courses on Port Philip so we use symmetrical kites, but A sail gybing looks sooooo much easier. Props to your main trimmer, dealing with that cats cradle system; the 'german' system on the A35 is much easier to use. I like the look of those Pontos winches too. We're still in lockdown here so 4 months without a fix is hurting. You keep me sane(r). Keep up the great videos. 👍

    • @PsychoTillerSailing
      @PsychoTillerSailing Před 2 lety

      Thanks Jon! Considering we pay Mark (main trimmer) $0 per race I'd say we're getting quite a bargain, might even double his pay soon! The mainsheet on the 1080 can be a lot of work sometimes, it's manageable without winches but some of the 1080's have opted for winches which is not a bad idea in some respects. We race against an A35 out here in San Francisco occasionally, they're fantastic boats. Using A-sails is nice because it gets rid of that pesky spin pole :) I think the timing on the jibes is a bit more difficult with an A-sail with inside jibes but with a little practice and after a few kite wraps it gets easier. As you mentioned though, windward leeward and DDW racing is still usually faster (and less work) with a symmetric. Good luck getting through you're lockdown, stay sane and healthy! We went through a similar fate a few months back and it's not easy. Not convinced we won't end up there again but I sure hope not. Strange days the entire planet is living through right now. Thanks again and thanks for watching!

    Hardest racing in light wind, nice job navigating the hole at Red Rock. The best play we saw was boats running on the south side of carquinez, jibing out just before the C&H wind hole and then working middle to south shore. Fun day and we thankfully never ran out of very cold beer.

We have our 1st regatta of the autumn season on 19th sep, will be interesting to see how we get on, hopefully not so many gybes needed. Have uploaded a few of our regattas if you fancy seeing some Mediterranean sailing, search for my name on CZcams.

      Lol! Well, since you put it that way I'd have to sheepishly say yes that's correct. But you also forgot to mention how costly it is too! You have me seriously questioning my mental health at the moment :) On a serious note, during the pandemic we started cruising more and rediscovered just how much fun casual sailing can be. It's quite relaxing and fun to not really care if the sail trim isn't just right. Still love racing but we've been doing a good balance of both lately. Thanks for watching and commenting. I've enjoyed your videos and adventures also! Any new adventures or videos coming up soon?

      That's a great way of describing it! There's that 2 second period at the top of the wave when everything seems to goe quiet and still, just before the boat surfs down the face of the wave. A GoPro camera unfortunately never quite captures the true size of waves. These were certainly not enormous ones but big enough to make things exciting. My compliments to the entire crew. Don't think I want to teach you anything, but why has the girl to labour so hardly on the winch? Wouldn't be better if the helper stays to the loose side and the girl starts as soon as possible to pull the sheet with her hands using the winch only for the final touch?

    • @PsychoTillerSailing
      @PsychoTillerSailing Před 2 lety

      @CT Thanks for the comment and watching our video! Your suggestion is certainly a good option and depending on the boat and crew in many cases that may work best. When Lana and I double hand the boat we do it the way you've described. With full crew Lana and Marcus have tried a few different ways in the past including your suggestion and found when Lana (Trimmer) releases the sheet and Marcus (Pit) tails in the new sheet it seems to work best. Usually after Lana releases the old sheet and crosses down to the low side to start grinding most of the slack is out and the rest needs to be taken in with the winch. At least with the way our boat is set up the only way to have the trimmer effectively tail the line and then also winch it would require leaving the line in the self-tailer. But doing that means it doesn't tail quite as fast. The other option is to have a big strong guy grind the winch but Lana who is also co-owner of the boat loves to trim. Although she is small she is mighty and I fear she would fight to the death before giving up the sheets! In the meantime the rest of us will just sit back, enjoy the ride and watch her do all the hard work! Thanks again for your comment, appreciate you taking the time to comment and the discussion.

      Thanks for watching and the very nice compliment. The 3 bridge is one of our favorite races because it's just so ridiculous it's impossible to take it too seriously :) I think this race was only the 2nd time we sailed the boat double handed, even just cruising because we had just purchased it. So, our tacks are much better now but you bring up an interesting suggestion. I think we might lose too much pointing ability if we left the traveller in the middle but then again maybe not. Certainly worth experimenting with in the near future. Thanks again for watching and taking time to comment!

Unfortunately they sometimes decompensate into 'what not to do' stories but that's ok too. We try to learn as much as we can from each video. There's so much we just don't catch at the time that the video later shows us. Thanks for watching!
