We've had so much rain this summer that some rivers that are normally to low in late July are runnable. Tyler and I set out down the East Branch of the Spanish River.
The Spanish is a great river to learn and practice paddling in moving water and with Tyler having a new boat and itching to try it out in the rapids, we set out for five days.
The weather is hot and that leads to some insane thunderstorms that threaten to wash our campsite into the river. We also spend some time fishing and that leads to the perfect shore lunch.

Thank you! Are there any parts of the river that are good for beginners? Meaning no rapids or even swifts? I am particularly interested in the area around Killarney.
There is some flat water around that area but I also remember a few larger rapids/falls as well.
What a beautiful start re your uncle and what you all did with him , This is a wonderful tribute to him Tosh those are memories you'll always hold in your hearts. i've been on Wanapitei Lake never down the river it is spectacular so darn pretty. well done maneuvering through the many rapids . Excellent videography excellent canoeing down the river to Wanapitei Lake , your uncle would be so proud of you for making the run, God bless him I hope there are canoes in Heaven for him as well.

Back in the 60's, my husband and his brother were fishing in the north and caught a pike. My brother- in-law saw the teeth on the fish that was in the boat, screamed and jumped in the water. My husband then reminded him there were a whole lot more of those "man eating fish" in the water. Thanks for taking me along.

Nice trip!!! I loved that thunderstorm!!!! I don't get those here in my part of Arizona. That river looked like it was moving so fast. How many miles is the Spanish River?

You can tell what class the rapids are by what Tosh does: C-1 Single blade Paddle maybe C-2 Single blade paddle and thigh straps C-3 Single blade paddle, thigh straps and helmet 😂 Tosh, did you retire your canoe barrel?

Tyler, I have a two word culinary suggestion for you: Reflector Oven 😃 It’s my favorite way of camp cooking. Pizza is amazing cooked this way. My profile picture is a cherry pie baking in one of my reflector ovens many years ago
@@alanbierhoff6831 thanks Alan! That’s an awesome suggestion. Tosh actually asked about doing some pizza in his reflector oven next trip! I actually have designed one and made a prototype. I just haven’t tested it out yet! I will have to get it out and test out some pies!
@@CAMP_KITCH You could also get a cheap pie pan at the dollar store that would sit on top of (cover) your frying pan, inverted, to make a quick and dirty dutch oven

u sent me on a goose chase...lol ... just noticed how this river actually begins in the headwaters of Lake Onaping ( if ) considering that Onaping > Bennet > Kawawia > Friday > Scotia > >>>> all lead into one another.... and Onaping river ( from Bennet ) leads into Vermilion at a point near Dowling and Larchwood but Verm starts somewhere near Tramp and Appelo ( as i get it - likely Thor )... .quite the system i'd say ... considering that Verm drains into Spanish which is part of the old trading network noted as the Wakami trail ( near Sultan and near the Mississaga system to Ironbridge or the Aux Sables to Massey in Salter township near the confluence of the Spanish and the North Channel ) on the sign next to the Salter sign in Naughton ...... hmm !!! guy could spend a lifetime studying these systems on maps and and still get lost more often than not when out there... easier on the map

Awesome video. It’s unfortunate the logging operations aren’t leaving a bigger corridor of trees along the river. Checked out Google earth and the logging seems to be out of hand in that area. Huge swaths of clear cuts.

Great video. My pops and I have spent my whole life on the water. He's 74 now and we still fish every week together on my day off. I spend a lot of time these days wondering how long it will last and if I'll still go back to those places when he's gone. Videos like this remind me that he'd be pretty pissed if I didn't.

awesome ... did not know that Scotia was the beginning of the Wanapitei river system... always thought it was somewhere around Appelo lake... now i am confused about the Vermilion system .. if it begins at Thor Lake then Thor must be spring fed seems to be the logic !!! after reading about old first nation treaties i am starting to think that the Verm and the Wanapitei were considered one big loop in the old fur trader days... Verm ( not named such in 1850 likely ) ends at Spanish and Spanish drains into North Channel of Lake Huron while Wanapitei ends at French which drains into Georgian Bay of Lake Huron. Nothing new under the sun except the technology ( the guy with the generator and the other guy with the power saws >>>>> ) s-carry on....
