Greetings!
In this video I recorded a demo of me building and designing the www.sharefable.com/ website. There are timestamps below that take you to each section. I used ACSS and some Frames & Bricksmaven templates, because that is how I build - I don't build every section from scratch if I already have a template that takes me 80% of the way there. I made some CPTs before recording to speed up the video and I organized my media into folders for easy queries.
If you enjoyed this, let me know. If you didn't like it, let me know what you didn't like so I can improve!

      I did use it, but not sure it was really that prevalent (might have used it to copy or clone a class here and there, can't remember.) and I use it all the time for the auto suggestion and auto complete on input fields and, most importantly the css field. this is where the time savings really start to add up. Each AT feature really does start ticking up with time savings and efficiency each time you use it. It is also hard for me to remember what ISNT in AT - that is, I use Bricks with AT every time, so it feels second nature.

    Hi Brendan. A very good OpenSource CMS is Directus. I am playing with it a bit and find it very easy and feature rich. Unfortunately it's a bit underrated and gets not that much attention as it deserves. Directus can be used as a company hub including CRM, CMS, Support Ticketing and so much more. It has even automation features. It can be very powerful for Website creation in combination with NuxtJS, NextJS or (my favourite) Astro.

    Hey, Stefan from Divhunt here, great video Brendan, thanks for promoting us! :) If someone is interested in learning more about REST API, more speficially WP, we do have an academy on our website with some lessons of Headless WordPress integration with Divhunt. And just to comment on "broken text" you had when calling titles, this is coming from WP, when you load data from WP API, it comes encoded, and on Divhunt side you need to decode it. You are able to create custom function for that as well instead of using "replace". We have that lesson explained in Variables 101 on our Academy (can't link it here for some reason). Other solution is to use data coming from Yoast similarly to what you did for featured image, Yoast is not encoding data. And for description, when WP is returning you HTML instead of just string, you should use "embed" tag and attach that data to embed and it will render properly without you needing to replace it. This should be also done for content on single pages for example.

    • @BrendanOConnellWP

    Thanks for another great video, Brendan. I have looked at a number of options in the past for serving static pages for WP sites. In each case, there are limitations. The only real benefit I can think of is that WP is not live, so can't be compromised. Apart from that, with fast hosting and good caching, I really don't see the benefit. I would love to hear your thoughts on use cases where this would be a significant benefit.

I was lucky to not have a single site hit with the Bricks hack earlier in the year, but got me thinking about lots of sites we have that we are the only ones who update them, client never logs in, rarely asks for updates, and just needs a contact form - prime candidates for static hosting and not have them be potential attack vectors! Another thing is older clients looking for a way to ensure their website is up after their passing without much ongoing cost/work. As far as ACTUAL production benefits, I do not work much with enterprise clients where this might be deployed. And even then, there is more than likely a locked-down subdomain where clients can edit and then have it version controlled onto prod through something like Pantheon hosting. But similar idea to the workflow. CMS->Git->Static Hosting with dev/test/prod environs. I think for the average person, this is a good way to offload personal or client sites that rarely get updated and obviously don't need ecom/LMS/etc features.

      @@BrendanOConnellWP Yeah, I'm not sure. It also adds cost and a different workflow. I didn't get any Bricks sites hacked either. In fact, I have not had a single WP Site hacked since I started care plans with hosting 2 years ago, and building 18 months ago. I have good server security, strict plugin policies, regular automated site updates, and good vulnerability monitoring. If the client doesn't want our services, the site is no longer our issue :) That said, there are a lot of different client types, with different needs. So for those who just want static sites that don't change often, this could be a good solution. TBH, they are not the type of client that I want to work with. For someone who wants to target this type of client, it could be a good marketing point of difference ??

      @@wpeasy I'm with you on all the points you mentioned! For me it's a tool I have to offload some older sites, and as a niche usecase for some sites. Other than that, yes, I am in the business of building meaningful, growing web projects with regular updates, multiple stake holders, different editor roles, etc where this workflow doesnt make any sense. I also have never had a WP site hacked (knock on wood, if you read this as a hacker, thank you) I am certainly not suggesting everyone go out and make all your sites static and perhaps need an additional disclaimer in videos like this...I am glad you are looking at it from a "Does this make me or my client money perspective" because sometimes we forget that or it is a vague 'it just does' as we test tools.

      @@BrendanOConnellWP Question: After you develop a site and deploy it from your local install, do you create a working wordpress version in the cloud so that other people can log in and add content or do other modifications and then deploy the static site, as you are doing from the local install?

    • @BrendanOConnellWP
      @BrendanOConnellWP Před měsícem

      @@peterwyro9365 In that situation, no, Local wouldn't help. But you can have users/editors log into a locked down temp URL/subdomain that then has the Gitdeploy to the static site, so that way you can control access to for editors and the front end is headless. Also something like Pantheon Hosting would be useful there, as there are 3 layers of test, dev and live environs that can be be accessed by cloud and git

    Amazing video on how to get started with simply static. Do you see yourself using this in the future as well? Secondly, I assume things like search, woocommerce filters etc won't work. So this would be for 'basic' brochure websites.

    • @BrendanOConnellWP
      @BrendanOConnellWP Před měsícem

      in simply static pro there are additional features you can add, like Search. Filters might work (they do in Bricks) but you can't actually check out in ecom on a static site without further config and knowledge. this works best for sites that have content and a contact form - not LMS/ecom - but it does support dynamic content, in that custom posts and templates work.

    Thank you for this. Also, i am new to this github thing - For public repository, wont the people be able to copy the code of static website? Should be kept private i believe? I believe from browser anyway it can be copied

    • @BrendanOConnellWP
      @BrendanOConnellWP Před měsícem

      Yes you can mark them as private. People can already copy most of a websites code when it's publically available already, but yes it is probably best practice to mark that as private unless you know exactly what you're doing

    this looks interesting and there is an Appsumo deal that ends in two days...I am thinking of getting it, the reviews seem to be very positive and I have Bricks and a few people have commented that it seems to work well with Bricks. Are you going to grab the deal? Curious if you will or won't...will watch this video after dinner, just mulling it all over, I think it is a great idea for many reasons and if you can have the UI of Bricks and the safety and security of static, seems like a good idea... A few hours left till credit card time, ha ha...

    • @BrendanOConnellWP
      @BrendanOConnellWP Před měsícem

      Yes I already own SimplyStatic Pro (this video demo requires it for github). I have a number of sites I want to potentially offload to static, so for me it has already paid for itself. Really depends on if you have a solid usecase, but yes security is a factor as you mentioned. Keep in mind many things in WP don't function the same on static hosting (forms to name a very important one potentially). There are solutions to adding forms, including Simply Static Pro i think has some direct ones. Ecom wont really work, LMS, etc - stuff where people are interacting with the database. That being said there's lots of sites that can benefit from it

    • @user-eo1vz9lt8g
      @user-eo1vz9lt8g Před měsícem

      @@BrendanOConnellWP yeah, I just think that there are many sites for restaurants or plumbers that could benefit from being able to have it running on Local WP or something and potentially push the probably very few changes that they would need and not have to have to worry about database scares...I'm new to all of this but database has more risk and static is much more difficult to hack as far as I can tell from YT....so much to learn.....arrrggghhh...

    • @BrendanOConnellWP

      Sounds like you can already see the benefits for those types of sites. I am with you in that line of thinking. It's another quick-deploy backup in emergencies for some sites. Let me know if you have more questions.
