Our Year With Sophie
On December 17th 2022 a van drew up in our street in the small hours and a Romanian dog called Sophie came into our lives. She was terrified and for months spent most of her time behind a sofa. But gradually, with the help of the wonderful Si Wooler (@sociabledog9881 ), she has gained in confidence. There is still a long way to go but thank you to all who have supported us on Sophie's long journey away from fear

Introducing Ruskin Park: Sylvia, the BBC and Me
zhlédnutí 1,5KPřed 9 měsíci
My memoir Ruskin Park is all about my mother, who joined the BBC in wartime Bristol in 1941 and stayed until the mid-70s, for most of that period struggling to bring up first my half-brother Stephen then me as a single parent. Here I describe how the book is the result of my discovery of a treasure trove of letters when, after her death, I cleared the council flat where I had been brought up. "...

Ever since she arrived in our house just before Christmas, our very timid rescue dog Sophie has lived in one room - the kitchen/living-room at the back of the home - although she has used the bathroom. The door to the hall, the front door and the front room. has stayed open - but she has never come close to stepping through . Then suddenly this weekend she wandered out into the hall, curious ab...

#Sophiefromromania and bacon - a story of unrequited love

Three months after she arrived at our house in West London Romanian rescue dog Sophie is still very nervous. We spend a morning with her - first she carefully emerges from behind the sofa and heads out into the garden, then she has to decide whether she is brave enough to accept a piece of bacon from me. You can see how much she wants it - but does she dare come close enough to snaffle it?
Stopping Skiing

For nearly 40 years, I looked forward with great excitement to my annual skiing holiday. I was never an elegant skier but reasonably competent and very enthusiastic . In 2022 three years after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s I returned to the slopes and coped better than expected. But in 2023 I found it almost impossible to turn on any but the gentlest slope and realised it was time to call it...

Gaining the trust of our Romanian rescue dog is a slow business. But ten weeks in I had a great moment after a difficult morning when Sophie had seemed more nervous and standoffish than usual. After four or five occasions when she approached and retreated she finally stopped and let me stroke her for a few minutes, encouraging me to resume every time I stopped.

In the February week of Valentine’s Day our very nervous rescue dog #sophiefromromania made some significant steps forward. She learned to play with flower pots in the garden and indoors she tolerated a little stroking from me. It's just so sad to see all these TV personalities on our screen, particularly Jeremy Paxman when questioning Michael Howard in Newsnight, that was classic. Of all these 6 people, I think Gillian's condition is probably the worst as I could see her involuntary movements of the body. She used to be so beautiful and vibrant on the BBC morning breakfast giving us first-hand up to date news in the financial world, it's just so so so so sad to see her like this. I hope with the advent of AI and medical science, we will soon be able to find a permanent cure, not just palliative care.

I've downloaded the book to Kindle and I'm really looking forward to reading it. It sounds like a fascinating personal story and slice of social history. My dad had a previous wartime marriage which he never spoke of and I didn't really know about until after his death. It made sense of some family stories and gave me a new perspective on him as a person (and a very fine man) rather than just my Dad.

What a shame - this is virtually unwatchable due to the poor sound quality. The subtitles help a little but suffer from the usual CZcams transcription issues.
