The Dragon Paradox

"Dragons aren't real in the same way that fish aren't real" - JRR Tolkien The problem started with a book. Actually, I suppose it started with a show, “Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real,” that I watched, enraptured, late one school-night. And you could say it made me a little… obsessed - not just with dragons, but with the paradox right there in the show’s title. If dragons aren’t real, the show ask...

My battery is low, and it's getting dark. The saddest piece of art I’ve ever seen is about a robot. Actually, it is a robot. I think AI will skip well past our level. It already, without consciousness, can process information faster than any human ever could. Consciousness is not needed. The only reason to try and program it would be curiously. We are conscious. Now imagine you being able to process more data then you have in your whole life in a single moment. Would you even be able to handle that? I think people fail to realize that consciousness is the last thing you need to worry about with AI. Them not having it makes them much more capable.

Can't a dragon just be humans from the past classifying dinosaurs as dragons. Like some Chinese painter saw a dinosaur with wings like a pterodactyl and go "lemme call it a dragon" and he drew a depiction of it. And infact they're the same thing. We just wanna believe that dinosaur bones we've found aren't dragon bones but dinosaur bones. You get me?

as a biologist studying ethology and anthropology, this video really struck a chord. i was in adulthood, after a lifetime of dismissed mental health struggles and loneliness, diagnosed with autism, which helped me mentally deconstruct the ironic attempt of classification of people in our society as normal and as not; the perception of which plagues seemingly all of us, whichever category we generally belong to. as a anthropologist, i know that the truth is that we are all human; yet i am still battling to even accept who i was, who i am, seemingly comparing myself to the self that i am, and was, not. i have always seemed to understand and care more for animals, fictional or not, than the people around me do. of course i have met and learned of people who appear to share my infatuation, but none have characterised it and verbalised it in such a introspective way as you have in this video. i hope that the comments of people stating that this resonated with them reach you, because even though all our experiences differ, we are not alone in them.

20:42 They slayed the very oldest, the one who was the first Within the flowing blood - every giant was submerged These waters of decay would never cease to flow Creating every sea and every river that we know And while the giants drowned, the gods got the idea To take the corpse of Ymir and make the earth appear His body would become the soil, his skull became the sky And then they threw his giant brains aloft to form the clouds His teeth became the rocks, they made mountains from his bones And on the meadows through his hair the summer breeze was blown Out of the ashes and into the light The dead will make room for the living Deep in the darkest of nights The end is another beginning

If you ever want to become a mathematician, this type of thinking process and, in some way, "world view" would be extremely useful. To be honest, most pick this subject out of the need to understand not reality, but human reasoning. Set theory and propositional logic are the way to go.

I don’t know if this was the purpose of the video but it seems like a lot of the behaviors you’re describing are symptoms of autusm. Although I don’t have autism I can empathize because at many points in my development I exhibited the same behaviors. It has always made me wonder about the causes of autism and the nature of the spectrum. Growing up, I was also usually alone, but unlike kids with autism it wasn’t because of an inability to connect but because I was forced to move often, losing all of my friends and acquaintances each time. Throughout my life all I ever had to keep was myself, and I was the only one to keep me company. This manifested in a number of obsessions, but unlike children with Autism my obsessions were broad: I didn’t want knowledge of any particular subject but of everything. It’s taken me years to come to terms with my own truth. Years of searching and thinking and reflection have led me to a simple truth: the nature of the world evades even the simplest of understanding. We try to bring into conscious light the nature of creation but being humans we can only consciously perceive shadows, fractions, or angles of reality. All animals seem to have been built for a specific purpose biologically, their legs built for running, or swimming, clawing, jumping, but humans aren’t particularly good at anything, save for 2 things. For one, we are the only animal in the entire animal kingdom that chooses to stand and walk upright. This isn’t particularly efficient, or powerful, or fast, or advantageous in any way. All it allows us to do better is fall. The second is that humans have abnormally large, bulbous brains, that take up a lot of our resources. We have necks that crane strangely and aren’t very stiff, but they can look upwards, and maybe the least surprising of all, is that we’re the only animals in the entire animal kingdom that can freely look straight up. It seems that biologically, our only purpose is to stand on our hind legs like idiots that can be pushed over by a breeze and look up at the sky, wondering, imagining, and understanding, that we are one and the same.

In Xenoblade only the original two titans, the Bionis and Mechonis, are gods. In Xenoblade 3 you do see parts of their (simulated) corpses, but for anyone who's played Xenoblade 2, whose (simulated) corpses you also find in Xenoblade 3, you know that the titans from that game are *SPOILERS* just the next evolutionary step of Blades, who give life to more Blades, and eventually die. In which case the video ends up being "what happens after a being that's really big in size compared to a human dies" Also, Xenoblade 1 takes place in more of a pocket dimension rather than "another universe" and Xenoblade 3 is more of a virtual simulation than the worlds being frozen. The thousands of years of history in Xenoblade 3 take place in one space of time, less than a second, the space between one microsecond to the next, within a simulation. Or at least, that's the only way Takahashi is keen on describing it until the future games come out.

I think the answer is pretty simple. Dinosaur skeletons have been discovered in ancient times by older civilizations across the globe. Most of These civilizations would also have hunted or eaten birds and been familiar with the skeletal structure of birds. Now imagine you find a giant dinosaur skeleton and you see the similarities with birds in some of their skeletal structure. Well, you’d note that the face is more like a lizard, but that the bipedal dinosaurs would have had similar arm structure as birds. So in that case they would and did interpret that as flying lizards basically, ie dragons. The idea of ancient humans finding terrifying giant dinosaur bones and what they thought about that is much more exciting to me than the idea of Dragons 😂 the actual reality is always more fascinating, it’s simply a matter of knowledge and perspective that reveals its magic to you.
