Does McKinsey only hire from top universities?
In this video, we deal with another question we get a lot - is it true that McKinsey only hires candidates from the top universities? And what are my chances if I didn't?
In fact, McKinsey does hire a lot of candidates from the best universities in the world, but maybe not for exactly the reason you think. And if you know why, you will have a better chance to get an offer even if you didn't go to one of those schools.

    I'm slightly confused with the "increase in market size" analysis in 10:10. I would expect the increase in market SIZE to stem from entering new markets (geographical regions both domestically and internationally), targeting new customer segments (sell food and beverages not just restaurants but to cafeterias in schools for example), and such.

    • @BuildaSkill_coaching
      @BuildaSkill_coaching Před 9 dny

      Hi! Thanks for your comment. Growing into new geographical markets or expanding into new businesses are things that Anna ruled out in the beginning (see where she crosses out the branch "Growth from new markets or business models" at around 7:15. Absolutely, the company could expand their target market by growing in this way, but Anna already asked clarifying questions in the start that made it clear that that's not in scope. Hence, the breakdown of growth into market size and market share that you see at 10:10 only refers to the existing market that they are already in. Hope that clarifies things a bit!

    Hi, Anders and Anna. Thank you for the case - it is a very illustrative and insightful case. I'd just like to clarify one of the feedback shared by Anders after the case. Would eventually using the 3Cs be acceptable in this case? When I drew my structure, I had similar headings to those of Anna (Grow the Market x Steal Share), but under the "Steal Share" driver, I had: 1. Diagnose the current landscape 2. Adapt the company's offering 1.1 Identify Restaurants' buying criteria 1.2 Evaluate the competitor's offering 2.1 Increase goods quality 2.2 Evaluate new pricing strategies 2.3 Consider distributing goods to new customers other than restaurants 2.4 Improve marketing strategies to increase awareness of the company's services (if relevant) The rationale is that we should first understand (i) what restaurants value and (ii) what our competitors offer before (iii) adjusting our offering. Ultimately, I am relying on the 3Cs. What do you think of this approach? Too framework-y?

    • @BuildaSkill_coaching
      @BuildaSkill_coaching Před 6 dny

      Hi! Nothing wrong with using frameworks if you know why they are structured the way they are and they are MECE. In the case of the 3Cs, the best way to describe it in a MECE way in the context of a growth case is the following: Growth = growth potential x company's ability to capture that potential. Growth potential = market growth x potential market share gain. Hence growth = market growth x potential market share gain x company's ability to capture the potential. Which in a simplified way then translates into CUSTOMER x COMPETITION x COMPANY.

    Excellent video! I'm currently a student starting my first year in Design Tripos at Cambridge. Do you think it would be possible for me to get into consulting from an architecture+civil engineering background?

    • @BuildaSkill_coaching
      @BuildaSkill_coaching Před 6 měsíci

      Absolutely! Top management consulting firms hire based on your problem solving skills, your drive and your people skills, not based on which specific educational background you have. Architecture and civil engineering are obviously great platforms for building your problem solving muscle! You might find that they spend more active recruiting efforts toward students from finance backgrounds or industrial management engineers etc, but that is just because limited capacity is prioritized where the hit rate is the highest (i.e. where they find the biggest proportion of interested and interesting candidates). So go for it!

    I have heard that the PEI answer should be a long monologue atleast 7-8 minutes long. If that's true, isn't Ann's answer way too short?

    • @BuildaSkill_coaching
      @BuildaSkill_coaching Před 7 měsíci

      Hi! Thanks for your comment! A couple of reflections: 1) Yes, as Anna points out in the beginning of the video, this is just a small part of the PEI interview, specifically covering how she goes about influencing others. The remaining parts of the Personal impact interview, where we go into other elements that are being assessed, you can find in our course along with all other materials we have on PEI. The curriculum is here: buildaskill.co/mckinsey-pei-digital-course 2) Yes, 7-8 minutes is a reasonably good target for how long your story should be as you prepare it. But don't expect it to be a monologue once you are in the actual interview. As you tell your story, you will be interrupted, asked to go deeper in certain areas, talk about specific events in your story that you may not have planned for, etc. So see it more as a conversation than a monologue.

    • @BuildaSkill_coaching
      @BuildaSkill_coaching Před 10 měsíci

      The "tell me about yourself" prompt is typically just part of a warm-up. To make sure the candidate gets a bit more relaxed before getting into the interview. So think of it just as how you would introduce yourself in any interview setting. Try to make it quite short, don't get into too much detail about stuff that can anyway be read from your CV. And of course, it's also a good opportunity for answering the implied question: "why are you here? what is it about consulting that interests you?" And thanks for reminding us about another FAQ we should answer in a short video :-)

    Thanks for the very helpful videos! I binge watched all the videos to prepare for my upcoming second round McKinsey interviews. I have a few of follow up questions: 1. If one dimension was asked in the first round (e.g. personal impact), could that dimension be asked again in the second round interviews? 2. Can I tell the same story twice to different interviewers? I am asking because I'm running out of stories to tell. 3. Is it possible to have more than one dimension being asked by one interviewer?

    • @BuildaSkill_coaching
      @BuildaSkill_coaching Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks for the nice feedback. Happy to hear the content is helpful! We will keep adding FAQ videos, so thanks for the questions! Quick answers here though: 1. Yes. In most interview processes (differs slightly by office) you will have more interviews than there are dimensions, so by default you will get the same more than once. 2. If you do, it's good to inform the interviewer that it the story is from a situation you have already talked about with another interviewer, since they will talk to each other. Some interviewers might then ask you to pick something else, but most won't care. Everyone will ask their own follow up questions, so it's not that big of a deal. 3. No. But interviewers will note down if there are things they pick up that are outside the dimension they are currently interviewing for.
