    The CZcams algorithm brought me here - which is kinda' scary because it seems to know me better than I know myself. Nonetheless, Excellent info! ...and I thought I was the King of Google flights. I will add this for what its worth: Over the past 15 years (excluding much of the pandemic), we have traveled out of Vegas to North Africa and SE Asia perhaps 6-times/year. For EU travel, I will first go to Ryanair, EasyJet, Aer Lingus, Vueling, and Wizz Air sites directly, to check their schedule which is typically NOT on google flights. Then, do the google flights thing to find a manual connection match. Since we live part time in Tangier, it's almost always RyanAir into Tangier - which is never over $30. I have paid as low as $8.59 from Valencia to Tangier nonstop. Our daughter lives between Valencia Spain, and Edinburgh, so we try and travel with sub 25Kilo carry-on backpacks ONLY. From you I learned to plug in Europe, and not just the cities in google flights. You are spot on regarding flights out of major airports. Not much out of LAS, so going to the EU, thus we will use LAX. Going to SE Asia we find SFO with the most deals. Sometimes, LAS to Inchon via KoreaAir can get really cheap - but that's rare. If we find it, we can take Scoot to Singapore for less than $50. Also my little trick on google flights is to specify "Multi-city" (not one-way, or round-trip). Since it seems not to care that a passenger may fly from LAX to Heathrow, to the next leg _Originates_ in Madrid to Istanbul. Then Istanbul back to LAX. Last summer my son and I left SFO, to Singapore to Saigon, to Bangkok, to Dubai, to Cairo, to London, and then back to Vegas. About $1600 All-in on various airlines (United/VietnamAIr/Emirate's/ BritishAir/Delta). Lastly, Norwegian Air *use to* fly from LAS nonstop to Paris for $139 each way ...back about 7 years ago. My daughter would sometimes fly to Europe twice a Month. I share that because its sooo important just to travel while one can. Thanks again for the great tips!

    How much in advance should I book air travel from Hong Kong to Chicago during December for Christmas and New Years? And should I get a one-way or roundtrip tickets

    • @TheCaminoGuide
      @TheCaminoGuide Pƙed 3 dny

      I'm not very familiar with what a really good price would be for that flight, but right now the pricing for July and August is currently quite a bit higher than it is for September through January. I'm seeing round trip flights with a stop in Taipei for about $900 to $1,000. If you are only traveling for a week or two, that's where I would probably go ahead and book the round trip ticket. It actually looks like a one-way ticket is priced to the same as a round trip. I mentioned on a short-term trip that it might make sense, but if you were booking to stay for a couple of months it might not. So if it's just that holiday period, The pricing can be volatile during that time so you might want to go ahead and book it round trip. It seems like a pretty consistent price from September all the way into January. The other thing to consider during the holidays is weather. Chicago can have some extreme weather in the winter, so probably better to have that round trip booked. You could pull up that flight and set the tracking so it emails you every day with price changes.

    • @TheCaminoGuide
      @TheCaminoGuide Pƙed dnem

      The Orisson is a pretty short walk, about 8 km. I always recommend starting the first day in the early morning when the sun is coming up, but that puts you at the Orisson at around 9am, too early for me to stop. I usually get breakfast there and just keep going. From the Orisson it's only about 18 km to Roncesvalles, and most of the difficult terrain is behind you. The rest of the day is just a nice easy walk to the top and if you take the path to the right at the peak, it's an easy downhill to Roncesvalles. You will average about 5 km per hour after the Orisson, so you should arrive in Roncesvalles by around 1pm - 2pm if you take a couple of breaks. Depending on your level of fitness, it may be a difficult day or it may not.

    It’s interesting to hear your perspective as a seasoned traveler. I disagree with some of the suggestions for myself, but I have specific reasons. I would never travel without my phone, battery pack, and charging brick, as I need to be reachable by family. I would say that people should weigh (pun intended) the pros and cons of whatever they pack. I am taking a 40L pack on my Camino this summer, which will be just right for me. But it would be very easy to overpack, so it’s good to analyze what really needs to go and what doesn’t.

    • @TheCaminoGuide
      @TheCaminoGuide Pƙed 12 dny

      There are a few people who camp, either in parks or sometimes in the backyard of the hostels. The average cost for hostile / albergue is about €10. Municipal facilities are generally about 8 Euros and some of the nicer private facilities can be around 12 to 15 Euros. It's a bit more expensive in SJPDP, as you are still in France and they usually fill up during the season. But once you get further along the Camino they get a bit less expensive. Overall I expect to spend about €10 per night. Some of the private facilities serve a pilgrim dinner for 10 to 12 Euros. I usually try to cook my own dinner if there's a kitchen and I spend about 3 to 4 euros for a box of pasta and sauce. If you buy wine by the bottle at the grocery store, there are decent local wines for 2 - 5 euros.

  • @Maryann110
    @Maryann110 Pƙed 12 dny

    In late April and early May there were at least 4 separate tour groups of 70 people each walking from SJPP staying in Albergues. This filled a lot of the reservable accommodations thus making the public and municipal albergues fill more quickly. This may have been part of “crowding” reports we heard at that time. They had motor coaches to transport luggage and those who didn’t want to walk the full stage.

    • @TheCaminoGuide
      @TheCaminoGuide Pƙed 7 dny

      I ended up booking a flight in mid-July because it was so cheap. So I'll end up walking mostly during August when it's hot. I'll probably pack pretty much the same as I usually do though because I may end up in northern europe for a bit. I did walk in September in 2022. The weather was perfect...about 25 C, give or take a few degrees. No rain until Galicia the first week of October. My basic pack works for September. You will want some kind of lightweight rain jacket for the end if it's rainy and maybe either a sweater or fleece jacket for evenings. But it's mostly shorts weather. The sun comes up a couple hours later in September, so it's dark until around 8am and you may be walking a bit in the dark if you start early.

    How did the Brooks shoes work out? Also, are you leaning towards using the raincoat only or will you use a poncho as well? Is the raincoat for blocking wind or rain?

    • @TheCaminoGuide
      @TheCaminoGuide Pƙed 13 dny

      The Brooks shoes worked well. The glycerin soles do a good job of absorbing impact from the road. I think the key for me was buying them wide. It gives a lot more room around the toes. Other people have been suggesting topos, so I'll put those on my list to try out. The rain jacket is good for colder weather and for wearing around town. It's better at trapping the heat during colder seasons If you wear a warm layer under it. The poncho works a bit better for steady rain while you're walking when the weather's not too cold. Ponchos allow for more air flow. If I go back at the end of August I doubt I'll need a poncho. There's very little rain that time of year until you get to Galicia.

I haven't had much of a problem But I'm hearing that some airlines are paying commission to the people who get you to check your bag. The osprey talon 33 seems to be just under the measurements. The osprey website has measurements that include the top storage but that can be sort of mashed down below the level of the frame. The frame itself measures about 20 in long, which is a few less than the 23 or so that most airlines allow. But I have seen quite a few people carrying on luggage that was clearly larger than that, like almost full size luggage. I saw this on both the flight two and from Paris. They didn't seem to bother anyone about it.

    In reference to your UA shorts getting nipped off the clothesline, a Camino vet that I follow said “buy ugly”. That way, maybe nobody else will wanna be caught wearing it/that/them, etc. And yes, Under Armour is available in France.

    How about insurance ( health and travel)? Do you have any video on the subject? Thanks!

      @TheCaminoGuide Pƙed 14 dny

      I don't have a video on insurance but there are probably others who have more experience with it than me. One of the videos I watched regarding insurance in Asia suggested that health care is so cheap there that the insurance was not necessary as long as you have resources to pay the bill. The total for our recent emergency room visit was about 180 euros.

    Should you buy a cheaper phone or a "burner" phone to use while traveling just in case it gets lost or stolen? Put your name in clothes. Stops the disagreement instantly.

    • @TheCaminoGuide
      @TheCaminoGuide Pƙed 14 dny

      I don't really worry about the phone too much. It's usually on me in a fanny pack. I don't like to spend too much time worrying about theft. It can easily become an obsession and taint the experience. I just didn't want someone else wearing my shorts. They have an underwear liner in it didn't seem right. I don't usually have any trouble with people taking anything. In fact I think this was the first time.

    Im confused why your Gpogle Fi is so much more than mine. I have ot as my regular carrier and i typucally pay $30 ish a month. Ive used it for my data traveling on London, Paris, Greece amd Italy. It os more to make a phone call, but data os just like at home. My bill isnt any higher.

      I just had to look it up on the Google Fi website. They have three different plans: flexible, simply unlimited and unlimited Plus. The simply unlimited does not include data outside the US, Canada and Mexico. If you need data for countries in Europe and around the world, you have to get flexible or unlimited plus. With the flexible they charge you $10 per gigabyte of data while you travel. So maybe that's what you are using? I guess that works if you don't use much data. If you get the unlimited Plus then you get unlimited data for the time that you are traveling until you reach the max that they allow. You can do the math on it and I guess if you're using less than 4 GB per month while you travel, it probably comes out about the same. If you use mostly Wi-Fi and only tap the data plan occasionally and don't use much, it's probably better to stick with the flexible. But I think they give you like 50 GB per month before they throttle you on the unlimited Plus. Here's the cost comparison sheet: fi.google.com/about/international-rates

    I just picked four Friendly Swede liners from Amazon and treated them with permethrin. I like the long zipper, which we prefer and they do have warmer versions. Four because we travel all over and family of four. Another great video. Sorry you have to cut your trip short. Feel better.

    Another great video! Same age as you - same issue with the 15lbs of extra weight that is almost impossible to lose even with a meager diet and strenuous exercise. Might need to implement the annual "camino" plan to get rid of it . . . of course the issue would be keeping the 15lbs off once you return from camino.

      @TheCaminoGuide Pƙed 14 dny

      I think maybe it can't be done. I go to Europe and the weight drops off instantly. I come back to the US and it comes right back. Doesn't matter how much I exercise or diet. Might be something in the water. đŸ€”

      I have an issue with gluten, so I eat gluten-free bread, pasta, the whole 9 yards, when here in the US and in MĂ©xico. It ain’t fun, but I have to do it. Yet, in France I can go nuts with the baguettes, croissants and pĂątisseries because they grow and use a wheat that is lower in gluten than what we have here. Otherwise, I follow a Mediterranean diet and walk everyday as if I were doing a piece of the Camino, sometimes with, sometimes without some weight in my backpack. The key is too keep moving, especially as we get older. đŸ€™đŸœ

    Hi Greg, I avoided albergue this year due to the overwhelming crowds and scared of getting sick. My son's and I did the Camino Frances in 30 days with three days off. We are planning to come back and do the Norte. I have done the Camino Frances 4 times and it's time for a change.

    • @TheCaminoGuide
      @TheCaminoGuide Pƙed 17 dny

      Yeah, I've covered this in other videos. It's nice to have your own space sometimes, but in the early stages of the Camino, especially if you are alone, it's much easier to meet people and connect with a group if you stay in the albergues. For this trip I wanted the boys to experience the feeling of being connected to the community on the camino. I find that each time I go back, it's like coming home. People seem to care that you exist on the Camino. I'm hoping my son will always find that feeling of home there.
