Ahoj-Brause is indeed intended as a powdered drink. Kids love it, because you can "make" your own drink with it or you can play a rebel and put it in your mouth without water. It has been around for a long time, so many adults have fond memories of the brand. At some point people have found a new use for it, which is to mask strong alcohol. If you put Ahoj-Brause in your mouth and flush it down with a shot of some bottom-shelf spirit, you don't taste much of the booze.

Correct, I totally agree. It is not a "german accent" but it is a "suebian accent". Suebian ist a strong accent in soutern Germany, normally not understood elsewhere in Germany, especially in the northern part. The local government explaines the country with the slogan, "we are able to do anything but speaking german". He explained, "I am very proud of may accent. And I am fighting that this will be accepted in the world, like it is with spaniards and french people. Spaniards and French people are very proud of their accents, but the Germans are not". The most famous speech in "Oetinger English" was at the european parliament, where he claimed, "in my kitchen with my wife I speak German of course but outside of my house I have to speak Englisch". Another famous englisch speaker, from Suebia as well ist Klaus Schwab, "wi häff nau aur pipl in all gaffernments all aufer the world".

That guy's a politician from the conservative party here in Germany, who more or less failed within his own party and therefor got sent to european parliament and I think later got EU commisioner for energy. In Germany itself he got famous for his painfully akward english, more than through his politics. 😅

Guys, want is the meaning of this video? Yes there are some people who are not fluent in English. Especially his generation. Despite that he is brave enough to talk English as a foreign language while other hide away.

To be fair recommending Günther Öttinger as the best English speaking German cannot be serious in any case. Öttinger is a conservative politician from south west Germany, from a region know to have a pretty strong German dialect which can be difficult to understand for people from northern Germany. He's a member of a generation who was taught English in a more old fashioned way and not as rigorously as it was done later. Öttinger isn't speaking English just with a German accent but actually with a perceivable Swabian accent. Swabian is one of several dialects spoken in south-west Germany. It's not exactly a perfect basis for learning English but can offer an advantage when learning French. For people from northern Germany it's quite the other way around.

I guess you must know both German and English to understand this guy. And let him talk slow.

He is very often the subject of people who speak english VERY bad. He is coming from the South of Germany like me, near Stuttgart. We Swabians tend to shpiek vary vary bad English :D It's always very funny to hear him speak English because he speaks with a broad swabian accent :D
