Yeah a heavy hitter book for sure. 🎉

@@read.your.comics I mean maayyyybe
Great review on a book I’ve never had or read!!! Gotta track this down now!!!
Thanks Rob! There are plenty of copies out there.
A man gave this issue to me for free in a discord last year. It was so awesome because it was one of the few issues of his I didn’t have.
Wow! Thats an incredibly nice gesture!
Have you read the entire PAD run ?
I read it as it was coming out and reread the whole Gray era around 20 years ago. My goal is to do the whole run on this channel.
@@read.your.comics nice. I started reading a bunch of marvel comics in order this year, I don’t know if I want to read the entire PAD hulk run all at once or just read a little of it at a time while reading other titles. Does it tie into any other series? Or do any other series affect it? I didn’t want to be confused while reading it since I haven’t read so many marvel titles.
@@fishin4bass2002 For the most part it stands alone. These couple crossovers with Web of Spider-Man and FF are about it until much later there is an X-Factor crossover. Then the Onslaught story spills out of X-Men. The Hulk does make a few notable appearances in other books (Wolverine 7-8 and ASM 328) but those don’t directly affect the main title.
@@read.your.comics thanks
Now days the writers are begging for money on twitter to eat. My how the times have changed.
Yeah that’s a sad thing.
I got this in a 50 cent box in Jacksonville about 6 years ago and recall having a good time reading it...i wish there were more books like this where a bunch of really talented creators jam. The Alan Moore and Richard Corben pages are an awesome short story in its own right and clearly steals the show at least imo (though there isn't a dud in the bunch for me)...it also indicates an Alan Moore written X-Men would've been incredible. Cool overview highlighting a book most of fandom probably doesn't know exists, at least I didn't.
I think I read a quote from Claremont once regarding the Moore pages where he thanked God Moore didn’t do any more pages and force him out of a job. 😂 The Wolverine one felt like a stand alone as well.
@@read.your.comics yeah the Wolverine segment is great, I would definitely read more of that
Super cool! Reminds me of that Harley Quinn #0, where each page is a different artist/style Side note: they missed an opportunity having Blob vs famine 😅
😂😂 Blob was on the Richard Corben pages.
Yes it was available on Newstand. That is where I saw it wayyyyyy back when. ;)
Makes sense it would have been. Especially when I noticed the DC one was.
Holy Art Adams cover Batman!!!! ;) ;)
Great stuff, real enjoyable comic
Appreciate you watching!
The entire peter David run on the hulk was really good, it lost steam after the hulk / pantheon story ended though.
Mid 90s editorial was getting overly involved with all Marvel books. Particularly when Onslaught forced him to give up Banner to Heroes Reborn.
I just picked this up at a garage sale. Super fun!
It’s goofy and loved it!
My favourite comic series of all time! Also the same one that got me into comics. Cool vid! ❤
Thanks! Please check out my long form vids for more fun comic content.
@@read.your.comics Oh, I already do! 😁 More Valiant vids please!
@@Skyescavernlibrary More coming!
Very cool, thank you.
Thanks for watching! Don’t miss the FF 320 video that preceded this one!
Amazing issue! Jeff Purves art is peak here.
Austen makes Purves shine!
Awwwww............... I was going to ask if you would cover the Avengers issue of the Evolutionary War.... But you answered before I asked. :(
Maybe I’ll do a whole video or series on Evolutionary War. Just no immediate plans for it.
I read the FF issue wayyyy back when. Did not bother with thei comic.... until now. ;) For drawing the new Thing..... some artissts could just not do it. :(
Well I’m glad you popped in for one more anyway. 😁
Keith Pollard is underrated and a forgotten artist, his layouts and storytelling were always solid and him paired with Joe Sinnot looks great- the issues of this run where he's paired with Romeo Tanghal also look good. I remember reading Englehart didn't like the art and felt like he was being paired with inferior artists, but I would have to track down the interview or quote. The Johnny/Alicia relationship was a Byrne invention, it happened when Ben stayed on Battleworld for a while.
Oh that’s right. The Byrne blemish.
Wonder how the original art looks like without the color. There is some pages with any black on it, only lines, kind of insteresting see McFarlane doing a sort of Geoff Darrow approach, in my opinion.
That is a good observation. He was doing double duty on ASM about this time. Perhaps a lighter hand on inks to save time.
Loved that comic. Seeing the Mutated upgraded Thing VS the lesser weaker Grey Hulk was a fun bit. And for once..... the Hulk was no match for the Thing...... whatttatwist. ;) ;)
They lean into that twist hard in this one.
I remember those era of Fantastic Four was and good run that needs to be remembered
It had great art by Keith Pollard and Joe Sinnott. Great run. :)
I’m definitely gonna do more from this era on the channel.
I appreciate your channel, thanks for sharing :)
My pleasure!
This is one of my favorite books. This was a real slug fest!!! 👊 🌟
Same here!
Looks like a fun concept and also the art is fantastic.
Yeah it’s great first entry for Michael. I’ve read up to issue 3 and it the builds up well.
The reason why I can't read most superhero books, especially copper age is because I feel like this... lots of sighs and not much fun. But the moment I really enjoyed in this video was ::pause:: "I get confused....I get confused" 🤣
Normally that’s something I would edit out but felt this one needed it for emphasis.
@@read.your.comics I'm glad you did!
I thank whatever god you pray to that romita jr and his shit art only did the mini, and the jim lee/mark silvestri clone did the regular series for a good run.
I would have rather had JRjr than this watered down Image attempted.
Ian Churchill was way better, I remember hating that Kirby crap.
Ian Churchill was good too. Don’t think I’ve ever seen the word “crap” after Kirby 😂
I had mentioned Blooshot #0 in another comment.... Made a BooBoo.... This was actually my first Valiant comic. Was a big fan of Don Perlin ever since I saw his work in the pages of Captain America. Loved this comic.... until Valiant had.... BirthQuake?? I think is what they called it??
I got onto Valiant around this time too. I was done by early 94 though. It was just too much to keep up with and the quality dipped.
That's some serious gore lol
For a mainstream comic of the time. But when Ennis and Dillon got on Punisher it made this look like kid stuff LOL.
Fairly certain that I've only read maybe one Valliant book. Maybe none. They just couldn't compete for my attention. I didn't enjoy BWS when I was younger and those pastel water colours really weren't calling to me. I'm sure they were better than a lot of what I was reading, but it wasn't EXTREME enough. ;)
I totally get it. I was all in on Image when this came out. But by mid 93 I was also realizing Valiant was telling better stories. And if you go back to those first two years they were probably the best superhero books being sold at that time. Unfortunately they unravel at the seams by 94. Still, some character concepts really endured.
@@read.your.comics If the books fell in my lap I would 100% read them! I still have my deathmate books. They're actually siting directly next to me.
Thus looks awesome! Glad to hear it'll end up in shops I'll keep my eyes open for it!
Definitely do! Ask your LCS to carry it.
Marvel Team-Up was so great in the '70s
At times it’s was better than ASM from that era.
Rollerball is a crazy good movie my grandmother had it on tape
Love hearing ur voice and learning about the latest comics cant wait to see you grow
Appreciate it!
I've enjoyed all of the pre-Acclaim Valiant books I've tired (some Rai, Turok, Eternal Warrior and X-O Manowar) I always wanted to read these...Valiant BWS seems a little restrained compared to some of his other work, but it still looks great.
He was working within Jim Shooter’s guidelines so probably held back some his more creative urges. Although I’ve read quotes from him saying his Archer & Armstrong run is one of his favorite works in comics.
more Darwyn Cooke on the channel please! also, bump time sale's hulk: gray up on the list :)
I can do more Darwyn! Not gonna hurt my feelings 😂
Cool art style! It looks to be either watercolours or coloured inks? Thanks for sharing
Michael told me it’s watercolor.
@@read.your.comics Great! Thanks for letting me know.
Thanks for such an in-depth&sensitive review, truly appreciated!
It’s a really fun start to the series.
The original Doctor Solar was more like DC's Captain Atom. Shooter turned him into a Dr Manhattan clone, and I find that power level boring.
I think the story for a character like this is more about the how the human mind can cope with having such power.
@@read.your.comics True. But Shooter wrote Solar as a "detached god view", negating your idea.
Awesome! I’ve always dug these Classic X-Men covers.
First Art Adams, then Lightle, later Mignola. It was the precursor to variant covers 😂
Steve Lightle was such a great artist (RIP). My mom got me the tpb of this story in 93 (the one with the Siekniewicz cover) and I loved it more than any current book I was reading at the time
@@nivekleveb8872 it holds up to this day. I just read it to my kids and they LOVED it!
Nice! Love this card set!
I’m itching to get the book that shows off all the painting large!
I definitely need to catch up on some of these iconic stories
I think the Omni is currently out of print 😢
I started reasing Valiant with Bloodshoot #0. So I missed a lot of the early Valiant issues.
I have Bloodshot 0. I will cover it eventually.
Love the feel of early Valiant comics! Thanks for the entertaining review. 😀
I remember some older guys talking about how it reminded them of early Marvel. At least continuity and world building aspects.
Sorry.... skipped most of the video. Can't watch that comic era of the Hulk sadly. :( Will be back to watching the whole video once you reach the Dale Keown era. See you then. ;)
I miss you though! Hopefully you are coming around for the non-Hulk videos.
@@read.your.comics Yes I will watch the non Hulk stuff. Will just skip the Joe Fixit videos. ;) The exeption will be if you cover the Wolverine comic with Joe Fixit as a guest appearance. ;)
Unfortunately I don’t currently have those issues but I am looking for a reasonably priced reader set. I MAY cover them via a trade or even over an iPad if I must.
Despite Marvel Tales being published in the 90s the X-Men story takes place in 1977 since that is when the main MTU reprint was published. West Coast Avengers #17 is from 1987 so it isn't that much of a stretch for the desert villians to stay hidden for ten-ish years. They were only henchmen after all (for the old X-men villain Lucifer)
I just thought it was an odd editors note. Like you said, this story took place in the late 70s then referenced a book from the that was even 4ish years older than this reprint.
There's something in the air that changes the hulk not the shock read it.
Looked again and nothing explains that in this issue. It does mention something in the air that affects the town but not directly affecting the Hulk. Maybe in the next issue?
@@read.your.comics ya those guys blamed a farmer for spreading nerve gas that is implied that it made the hulk dizzy and gas usually changes him I had to look it up too
The popularity of Joe Fixit was from that early Wolverine issues, so I think that what causes everyone to think grey hulk is Fixit, I can definitely say that's what I thought when I was a kid
Wolverine 8 is an iconic cover that I’m sure brought a lot of attention to “Joe”. They even made a Marvel Legends set recently.
