Here are a couple of tunes that number among my favourite: Inveran, made by one of the greatest pipers - dare I say musician - to ever live, George Stewart McLennan and Millbank Cottage by William Dumbreck, a man who held the title of Pipe Major in two regiments: The Black Watch and The Royal Scots. This style of tune - intricate and heavily embellished with many technical figures - is a branch...

Actress, writer, political activist, television personality and reputedly, the first person to say the word "fuck" on British television (1963), Miriam Margolyes, in wishing Bill Livingstone a Happy Birthday, gives us an eloquent and heartfelt ode to bagpipes. A piece of music that is in the back pocket of most experienced players of piobaireachd is the very old tune, Maol Donn. Better known, maybe, as “MacCrimmon’s Sweetheart”. It’s a beautifully assembled composition that sits perfectly in a major key of the Great Highland Bagpipe’s tonal centre. In the context of piobaireachd composition, it’s a very old tune, likely composed in the early part of ...

Among my stash of digitised VHS video is a good few hours of footage from the Peel Regional Police Pipe Band of my time as Pipe Major. The band then - as it is today, it seems to me - was well-travelled. With the exception of my first season (Antigonish!) we hit the World Pipe band Championships in Glasgow every year. In fact, its amazing to say now, as I think back, we even managed to make tri...

This is a recording of what is likely among the earliest recordings of the Great Highland Bagpipe played alongside other (non-bagpipe or percussion) instruments. This 78 RPM shellac (pre-vinyl) recording from 1928 stars a luminary from one of the great piping families of the last 200 years in Donald Ross ("D R") MacLennan. John MacFadyen (1926-1979) was a master piper and teacher. As a classical violinist I'm always amazed how the pipe bands play such rhythmically intricate music without a conductor only the pipe major tapping his foot obscured much of the time to the pipers and drummers alike. I doff my hat to them all !!!

21st century pipe bands have been effeminized. Strathclyde Police 1960s-1990s was amazing stirring as was Dysart, Shotts Edinburgh Police. 21st century pipe bands arent worth listening to or watching. They do notinspire. Pipe bands have lost their strong male, military bearing character. There should be a male only bands category, female only category, and mixed category(to satisfy the PC Wokesters). Modern pipe bands are way too wimpy now. Deep down you know it's true.

No. When the band was formed they wore these hats (and they're just hats). Bill Livingstone always thought they gave a "minstrel vibe" to the band and that suited. That said, there is nothing "minstrel" about the great soldiers and pipers and piper-soldiers who wear - and have worn - this style of hat.

"Live in Ireland" was the first "real" pipe band album I obtained after I started learning the pipes. That was way before youtube and the plethora of easy access to recordings, so I listened to that album hundreds of times and it made quite the impression on me. This medley, along with the rest of the album is permanently seared into my mind in a good way. I'm sure I'm not alone. What a treat to hear a medley from that era brought back in its entirety.

"Mason's" is a fun tune, "Cascade" is an intense/compelling tune, but man if those tunes in between aren't melancholy-inducing. There's something kind of bittersweet or even heart-wrenching about them. It's hard to describe. "Sad" is not the right word but definitely evocative of a kind of reflective mood. Thank you for playing this medley! Great sound, too.

I am sure you know about Paddy Donovan but for those who don't, this tune was composed by the late great snare drum legend, Alex Duthart. Paddy was an Irish snare drummer who Alex admired very much. Mike playing his awesome jig, "Tom Anderson," at 4:40. The first time I heard that tune was in 1990 at the end of a 78th Fraser Highlanders medley played at the 1990 Diamond Jubilee Pipe Band Championship. That medley was insane, and I remember thinking, "This jig is from the future." The whole medley had that feel, but this jig did in particular, and it was the perfect setup to their finale with "Eileen MacDonald."
