The AMAZING airships of Alberto Santos-Dumont
Inside of a faux Japanese pagoda in the Dreamland Park on Coney Island, visitors would find a unique airship on display: the Santos-Dumont No. 9. But who was Alberto Santod-Dumont? Did he, and not those poseurs the Wright Bros., actually fly the first heavier-than-air craft? And how did he influence the transition from pocket watches to wrist watches?

Forced to eat dog for colonialism: the story of the Coney Island Igorrote.

After the Spanish-American War, the United States had an image problem. The scrappy anti-imperialist upstart had suddenly acquired several formerly Spanish territories, including Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. How best to sell this sudden move toward American Empire? How about gather a bunch of tribes people from the islands and put them on display to prove how "uncivilized" they were ...

The Greatest Showman? Maybe, but P.T. Barnum was also a complicated figure with some very questionable deeds in his past. This episode takes a look at his first exhibition, an enslaved woman named Joice Heth, and Barnum's own claims of exploitation and abuse. How does this figure in to Dreamland's history? Well, it just does, okay! Special thanks to @bradslabs for providing the voice of Barnum!...

"The Wright Brothers obviously flew first" ???? The magic that is impossible to repeat? There is no scientific proof that they flew in 1903. The Wright brothers only appeared in public with their plane in 1908 and Dummont's Deimoselle (which looks more like modern planes) appeared a year earlier, in 1907. The dates mentioned in the video are comfortably wrong, but a quick Google search resolves this mistake.

Eating dog is abhorrent to me but I was brought up in a society where food was abundant and dogs were traditionally seen as household pets. I understand that it would be different for other societies. I'm always sad when I travel and see so many homeless dogs in a society that doesn't value dogs as household pets. Generally, that feeling towards dogs and cats has created a desire/need for government-run shelters to feed and shelter homeless pets awaiting permanent homes. Not every society sees this as necessary. But, for an American society to put human beings on display only to look down upon them as "zoo" animals, it's not that much harder to imagine them being forced to eat dogs. This further associates them as being sub-human and only worthy of our disgust. I'm glad we don't do this in America...at least so blatantly. Now, it's much more subtle.

oh yeah. That vomiting Animatronic in front of the GhostHole ride next to the PolarExpress. They updated it so it would squirt water from behind its butt into the glass. It was wild. I remember the Killer Rat, i remember how disappointed i was and seeing how peaceful the creature was, i knew it wasn't a giant rat but i didn't know what a capybara was either. I don't remember the two-headed baby but i remember those stalls, i remember seeing the headless woman which as a child i knew i was being duped. What would i want for the future of Coney? It would be impossible but i would like to see some of the rides back such as the BreakDance, Dante'sInferno, the PirateShip, Jumbo Jet, Polar Express, GhostHole, Original Thunderbolt and Tornado, Parachute Ride, The original Spook-a-rama track that went on way too long. And of course, The original three parks in its entirety (Dreamland/Luna/Steeple). I miss the mom and dad owned carnival game/rides, i really miss those Horse Derby carnival games, they're all gone. Gez, i miss late mid 90's Astroland. New Coney is way too Cookie Cutter and clean, and way expensive. It feels too corporate. Miss it when it was individual family owned. Sorry for the big reply but Coney Island was a very special place in my heart.
