Ambersands Snook 08102023
zhlédnutí 124Před 11 měsíci
August 10th 2023, Ambersands Beach. No bait schools or bird activity. I am the only person on the beach. I fished a paddle tail in the wash from the entrance North past the 3rd Hut. Along the way, I picked up one decent surf snook. Nice fish saved the day.

Never ever tighten your drag if you hook a big fish! We all get excited when a bigger than expected fish is running and the drag is singing. BUT! Never say to yourself that "I'm going to put a little more pressure on em." A little more is usually too much.

Beach Fishing is a strange sport! You never know what your gonna catch! Slow morning with no signs of bait or birds, Yet! Artie caught 2 blues and one small Jack, until I hooked up a strong contender. A turtle! It fought gallantly! Released unharmed! Then Artie snagged one as well.....larger than mine of course!
I've got the early morning blues.

A great return to the beaches, first cast = first fish. OKAY, It was a small Jack, then the blues arrived. Florida's bluefish are not like the North East monsters. I've read that they are actually a sub species that inhabit the Southern range and into the Caribbean. The Blues this morning had a green dorsal area and green around the eyes. Nice sunrise and I caught some fish. Can't get much better.

Bonsteel Beach, Melbourne Florida Early morning, Tarpon crashing schools of herring like bait off the bar, just out of reach. My buddy, Grant, fished a white buck tail jig with a white curly tail. He landed a 40" Snook and was rewarded with a good soaking.

Arrived at Bonsteel Park at 6:20 AM. I headed South about 1/4 mile. As sunlight seeped in, I could see massive schools of small bait fish headed North. They were at the limit of a long cast until the Tarpon, Monster Snook, and Jacks arrived. Just because we can see them, hooking them is another matter altogether. Jack at 11:54 Snook at 21:05

Bonsteel Beach this morning 9/19/21 Some small bait schools with no obvious predators, but they are there. Artie is a great guy and a great fisherman. He like that slam shady / Zman plastic with a 1/4oz jig head. Just cast it out, let it sink and reel it in slowly. No Jerking not twitching. Persistence pays! Artie always has his line in the water. I should learn to tsalk less and fish more!

The mullet run started about a week ago and is gathering in intensity. At this time of year mullet is the meal of the day for all game fish along the surf. There are Tarpon both big and small crashing the schools into the wash. Yet, Tarpon are the most difficult fish to catch on a lure. Yep! I've used them all and not one is consistent. My friend Bill is a Florida newbie from the Jersey Shore. ...

If you want big Reds. Fish the shoreline directly adjacent to the camp grounds at night with cut or live bait. The best Kayak fishing is on the opposite North side of the Inlet area away from the inlet itself. Fish the canals and mangroves. OR, launch the kayak in the Pelican Island National Refuge, a little further South of the Inlet. Easy FREE access to canals and mangroves. There is a kayak launch area in the Pelican Refuge. Please note, that is not wise to navigate a kayak in the inlet area. Many boaters are not wary of other vessels. Florida does not require any safety course to drive a boat.

Hi Mickey, There is an artificial reef that runs from the McCarthy Museum South to Wabasso. It is very close to the shoreline near Ambersands. Lots of rocks and snags within casting range at low water. I've lost many spoons, bucktails, and paddle tails by reaching out too far. So our casts must be along the shoreline.

The lighter jigs have smaller hooks and would probably open up like yours did. Do you know of any 1/4 oz jigs with big hooks? Looks like you had a mullet paddle tail on the jig head. It was my own fault. If I just played the fish out, I would have lander her. The lure that I was using came from China. I used it a few days ago and it withstood 15 small jacks without any damage, I just ordered 100 more black and white and clear crystal colors. I found a larger size of the black and white and ordered 100 of those. They will be my lure of choice for awhile. I'll give you some.

Some are mere pull offs to winding trails of sand before the beach, some are more direct with parking lots and many other anglers. The beaches have come alive recently with bait schools of herring, fry, and mullet. Once you turn 65, all licenses are free, even hunting. I'll be surf casting tomorrow AM, don't know where yet. When tarpon are around, line capacity is important. I'll use a Penn 6500 or 5500 in order to have 350 yards or more line. I'll match that with a 9' or 9.6' medium light action rod. Most fish will be in close, less than 100 feet from shore. Once a tarpon is hooked on the beach, its usually an hour long tug of war. Thanks JJC

Does that rod have the tip to be able to cast and work a 1/2 bucktail efficiently? I've been trying to find a rod that can reall cast 1/2 paddle/bucktails and the 7/8/1 1/8 sp minnows a good distance while still having enough backbone to swing a 5 or 6 lb fish onto the jetty. Either the tip is too stiff which hurts casting distance and makes it awful hard to work a lighter bucktail. The rods that have the right tip and can sling those lighter baits dont really have the power to confidently swing fish.

    • @visualedtech
      @visualedtech Před 2 lety

That's the trade off that applies to every rod. The Tsunami can probably handle your requirements. I have not fished off a jetty in over 50 years. So, my experience is limited to stiffer rods and soaking baits from rock jetties or piers, a really long time ago. I am currently using an 8' St Croix MoJo surf rod along the coastline in Florida. The strike zone is close to the beach. A long cast is not required, however I like to cast as far as I can. Its just part of the fun. If you can visit a fishing shop that has a good assortment of quality rods, you'll be able to test a few good rods to find the best of both uses. 6lbs doesn't seem like a lot of weight, until you try to lift it with a fishing rod. The more stress applied to a rod increases the chance of snapping it in two. I'll rig up the Tsunami and lift a barbell up. I'll post the result in another email.

OK Rusty! Just rigged up a 5lb barbell and dead lifted it with the tsunami, NO GOOD. The rod bowed nearly double with a 5lb load. I don't think that you will every find a rod that satisfies both of your needs.

@@visualedtech The best place as far as amount of different surf rods I've been to is TD. Theres only so much you can get from handling a rod. You really dont know until you cast it. I've a couple mojos the 8 and 10' and an older premier which works but I'm always looking for 1 that can do it better. The rod that keeps coming up is a century weapon jr. Little more then I usually spend but if it works it will be worth it.

@@visualedtech Oh no dont do that lol. There are rods that can do it, but not at that price point. Check out Black Hole USA nano rods, hes got videos his rods being pressure tested and lifting full water jugs.

They built much of that since I left in 87’. It was more rustic fishing but dynamite back then! (My first intro to no-see-ums) on my first Sebastian adventure!

The Pompano season is in full swing for the bait fishermen. Then we'll have Jacks, Macks, Blues and some Snook in the surf. Sharks...There are always sharks.

Sorry Rev, We all are distinct in this great country, but we are all Americans. My first exposure to America's diversity was in boot camp in 1969. We all learned how to cooperate and befriend each other whether we grew up on a farm or a city street. If it makes you feel any better, I don't even like the way I sound either, but I deal with it. Thanks

Its Easy! Just walk in through Mexico and we'll make arrangements to pick you up. Bring a rod with you and tell the border patrol that you're just "goin fishin'", That'll work,

This beach is in Melbourne/ Brevard County. This area is on the East coast, from the Sebastian Inlet North to Cape Canaveral. These fish probably will continue South into the Fort Pierce Area to Hobe Sound.

The mullet are everywhere moving South, I prefer early morning fishing, but they are showing up near the beaches all day long. The blitzes have been at 6:40 AM and at around 4PM.

That rod is 9ft6" Tsunami, I use either a 9ft or an 8ft rod. I am currently using an 8ft Mojo surf one piece, Its a light weight rod, casts well, and is well built.
