Easy Baitfish - Tying the All Nayat Flashtail Roach
Super easy and quick pattern using mostly that wonderful durable material 'Nayat'. As i'm a part-time commercial tyer I have to look for ways to remove some of the unnecessary material and ensure they can be tied quickly and consistently. This pattern is an example that evolved as a result of that, and has proven to be a good pattern for perch, zander in additional to accidental pike captures. No doubt sea bass and trout will eat this one.
Material:
Ahrex XO774 sz4 or SA280 sz4
GSP100
Bigstreamers Nayat in white and light grey
Bucktail in white
Hedron Flashabou in silver
Angelina Fibre in peacock and pearl
5 or 6mm red flat eyes

Learning Bucktail - Tying the Bucktail Firecracker (Deceiver) - Pike, zander, bass

As I have been tying a lot of these bucktails recently I decided to make a tutorial, which may help beginners. Learning bucktail takes some time, but it really isn't that difficult once practiced. The fly we are tying is a proven pattern for pike and zander, and no doubt will catch big bass too. Tying the Flashy 'D' in Roach - Pike Fly
zhlédnutí 10KPřed 2 lety
D = Deceiver. Well I start as a Deceiver, then switch to a hollow to support the yak and nayat. The tying style is a hybrid of both, as why tie one or the other when it doesn't always achieve what you want. It's a style of tying I apply to not just pike flies. The tutorial is packed with tips based upon my own experience over the years of tying and fishing. So I hope you find it useful.
Tying a quick Bucktail/BULKhead Hollow with ostrich | Pike, stripers and more
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 2 lety
Great pattern for salt and freshwater. It is simple to tie, but jazzed up a little with jungle cock and peacock. Heavily influenced by Bob Popovics and Jason Taylor in terms of style. I just love tying them. Materials are bucktail, ostrich, peacock and flash
Tying with Ostrich | Simple BULKhead Hollow | Pike, Stripers and more
zhlédnutí 11KPřed 2 lety
Ostrich is almost a forgotten feather, as there is a misconception that it's fragile. Okay, it's not a guide fly material, but it's a little tougher than you may think and moves wonderfully well in the water. I won't leave a material list for this super quick pattern, as it's really only ostrich and bucktail used. Hook choice is up to you depending what you are fishing for and where.
Variant of the Martins Minnow | Perch and Trout Magnet

Jig flies seem all the rage, but in fact have been here for a long time in the form of the Clouser Minnow, Jiggy and other patterns for salt species. One or two saw an opportunity to tie baitfish on that platform, and be very successful targeting trout and other predatory species. Friend...
Very easy Fuzzy Baitfish Tutorial | For anything that eats baitfish | perch, trout, bass etc

You'll spend longer trimming this fly than tying it. It's super easy and bares some resemblance to the Kinky Muddler (Jonny King) and EP flies (Enrico Puglisi) that have been around for years. I like the suppleness of the nayat tail and stiffness the Strung Fuzzy in this particular variant. However do play around with different materials and find what you like. Here in the UK I tend to use it a...
Flashtail Jig New and Improved - You need this for perch, zander, bass, trout

As with all fly patterns it's a journey. In this case the original nayat version swam and fished excellently and caught well. However tying them was awkward, so I've improved on the tying steps and thought I'd share a quick tutorial. You can substitute the nayat for a predator style dubbing, but for durability and little to no fouling I'd recommend you invest in some good quality nayat. Pro Tip...

    What is your view on using synthectic materials as against natural to reduce the casting weight your thoughts would be very helpful

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan Před 11 dny

      Good question, and I could probably write an essay on this. It is extremely difficult to answer as a lot depends on the tyers' skills and the quantity of material used. Small flies like the bendback, then no advantage in terms of weight. Big flies for pike and musky, then I learn towards less is more and use a combination of both in most cases. It's very hard to create volume without bucktail. You can with synthetic, but you end up using more material and, therefore, make the fly heavier. There are ways around this, but it's hard for me as I enjoy tying with natural materials. I tend to put focus on how the fly moves in the water, rather than weight. Weight of fly is managed by the appropriate rod and line.

    Beauty of a fly. I really appreciate tiers that economize and maximize their tying materials, especially with today's prices of materials.

    Howdo you soak your flies? Like do you use warm or cold water and for how long do you soak them?

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan Před měsícem

      I use cold water. To dry in winter I lay them on the radiator. Summer outside if it's sunny. Sometimes I hang them, sometimes they lay flat and might need a couple of soaks to shape.

    Thank you so very much for the great video!! However, I don't in any way mean to be rude or Sarcastic, yet I had to mute the audio, as your choice of Rock music, is very rowdy, and not at all harmonious, with fly tying!! Fly tying (since I began in 1978), puts me in a Tranquil mood, when accompanied with soft Jazz/Rock/Blues/soul, or no music at all)!! But as they say, "to each his/her own"!!

    Hey Paul, I watch your videos many times and pick up something new to me each time. One question I do have is, do you prefer to soak the flies and hang dry them before adding the eyes. I realize for the purpose of the instructional video, you plow through and add the eyes. But, givin' the choice, do you prefer to soak them first!??

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan Před 4 měsíci

      I always run them under cold water and dry them against a radiator first. It's because I usually tie in batches and in the habit of shaping them then. I don't think it makes much difference either way.
