DT BULKhead - Attaching Wiggle, Dragontails and Rattles to Pike Flies

- The Dragontail BULKhead in black especially, is number one on my local big river. This tutorial is really shared to show you how I simplify attaching Wiggle/Dragontails and rattles. I've not used wire to attach tails for a couple of years and have never had a bite off or problem with fouling tied as I show. If you have to use a stinger then you must use wire.
For Dragontail's it helps building some bulk in the fly to force the water over it to move the tail. This means you can fish the fly on a slower retrieve. Mostly I tie them short with the tail close the hook for better hook-ups and aid casting on my nine weight.
Materials are bucktail, nayat and Hedron flash in the main, but use your imagination to come up with your own designs.
The BULKhead is a Bob Popovics pattern. Bob is the author of Pop Fleye and Fleye Designs and has a massive influence on the streamers you see today. Go buy both his books as in my opinion are the best for streamer tyers. - Sport
Awesome video Paul! I’ve tied my tails in with only the loop for a while now and I totally agree, a second one really isn’t required on the fly! The method of attaching the rattles/weight is just genius! I’ll certainly be tying some of these tubes up for my arsenal! Thanks so much for sharing 🙏🏻🤩👌🏻
Thank you....yeah simple is best in my book. I was going to share the flash tubes, but remembered I already did it in another vid. Another option with that mono tail loop

Very helpful Paul thanks! Is there any rattles you recommend? I recently tied half a dozen flies with savage gear rattles but now all I have is half a dozen pike sized dry flies🤣

There are pike in most lakes, canals and rivers. I prefer rivers when they are open. You got plenty down there to have a go at

Hi, i have got into your vidios, so much so that i have gon out and bout a fly vice and things to start teaching myself how to make flys from your vidios. What company is best to use for getting hooks and materials? I am in norfolk. I dont even have a fly rod i am just fascinated by the art of making the flys.

What dimension do you use on the mono? :)
0.76mm is a perfect fit for the beads I use. Need to make sure the beads are snug to close the loop. Also stiffness in the mono to ensure the tail doesn't snag
