Great album I listen to the first time before I and it was really good
I treasure the Steely Dan output. I have seen them live several times. Old enough to remember buying this on its release. Honestly, not an album that really grabs me. I will definitely revisit. Would love to hear more Dan content on your channel. Cheers.
Definitely a great deal more digital tech involved than Gaucho. It sounds distinctly of the 80s decade. IGY was sardonic about growing up optimistically, expecting a better world (even back in 1982 I/he felt disappointed about missed expectations about how the world would develop positively - imagine how I feel right now about how things are going decidedly sour!?). There's a lot of cocktail about the whole LP (walking between raindrops for example). I think Don reached into his teens for the stuff he loved (he's a big fan of Henry Mancini's orchestra for example). I disagree with you about The Goodbye Look, which is bouncy, catchy, intriguing - I believe it's about Yanks being bounced out of Cuba and deliberately funny and disturbing. I adore the title track too, but get a Deacons Blues defeated vibe from it, rather than optimism. It's a great LP and the first digitally recorded album, and one of the first CDs. I've loved it since 1982. Perhaps you should have inserted some fair-use samples of the tracks.
Great, Ian. Thanks. Really interesting. I’m a big Steely Dan fan, and I have not heard this! Need to take care of that. The background helps.
Adore this record!
@@SOALNightLive this record and Sean are merged in my mind 😂 thanks for watching !
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout Glad to, Ian!
great album. in my opinion it feels more like a comfort album than anything I've heard in the past.
Dude.....Impressed with yer Take. Yer young and appreciate such a Masterpiece ! Love the video !
@@LoneWolf-qk9pl thanks ! I dunno what it is; I shave my beard and de-aged 10 years !
I've been a huge fan since 1972, I saw them live in 1978 at Wembley Arena, to this day its one of the top 3 concerts I've seen in my life, onto this box set I only wanted the Atmos mix and the live stuff so for me I hope they do a stand alone, £99 pounds is to much for stuff I don't need, Atmos mixes on this and other albums give a new listening experience, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells is another stunning mix, its hearing the album for the first time, I did have a 5.1 DVDA of Fragile and it was good but Atmos takes it to another level, thanks for the review great detail and I'm glad you've discovered Steve Howe as a fantastic player.
@@clivesilver463 I wish I could find Tubular Bells 5.1 ! Maybe if I’m patient it’ll be reissued in atmos soon
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout It was a Super Deluxe edition issue and a limited amount but it showed the power of Atmos, hope you get a copy.
Quality all over the place.
Post 'Discipline' King Crimson NEVER got better than the Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With EP released in 2002. It floored me and this was when I was really confused with King Crimson around the ConstruKction of Light release and the Projeckts releases and the who the hell was playing with who releases.
Zappa Family Trust sold the entire contents of the Vault to UMG. Don't put these quick releases to greed by ZFT. They have nothing to do with releases outside of maybe having Ahmet onboard with Joe Travers as producers/engineers. That said, Frank put albums out at breakneck speed and nobody complained about that, did they? As anniversaries go, this is the 50th year since Apostrophe was released and Over-Nite Sensation was released in 1973. If a 50th Anniversary Bongo Fury set comes out next year, don't put it to ZFT greed and welcome more from Frank and the Captain. A couple of full spring '75 concerts would be very welcome indeed!
@@Le_Serviette_Noir I’m all for corporate greed if it involves releasing classic, great albums with this loving treatment. 😊 now when they do the Thing Fish box I’ll complain 😂😂😂
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout My comment is directed at folks who blame Zappa Family Trust for being greedy, where it has nothing to do with them. A Thing-Fish box would be best ignored.
I've been listening to the Nightfly since the 1980s. Great songs, meticulous arrangements, great playing, and as you mentioned, brilliantly produced. Unfortunately, I've not been able to connect with any of Fagen's subsequent releases. But I'm satisfied with SD's initial run of albums, and The Nightfly.
This album is awesome. Thanks for recommending it and for reminding me of Steely Dan, too! 🙏

@@disintegrationnation9352 did I say it wrong ? Oops ! Nice catch
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout I enjoyed your review. I just listened to the first 2 discs. That first percussion laden improvisation is beautiful to hear. Very influenced by his "mentor" Edgard Varese. These recordings offer a missing link between Freak Out/Absolutely Free and Uncle Meat -- kind of a holy grail for me!
Hi Ian, it's nice to see the Zappa Estate releasing Apostrophe (') giving it the "deluxe" treatment. This seems to be the current craze; I mean everyone is dredging up anything they can find and putting out a box set. "Mind Games" comes to mind as a recent example, which is really quite unique actually. I like your novel appeal for support, that is linking your Amazon wish list to this video. Anyway, I'm almost 100% sure I'll add this set to my FZ collection which began in 1969 with Uncle Meat, (of course I went back and got everything prior to Uncle Meat). Keep up the good work.
This isn't necessary. Between the Crux Of Biscuit, the studio disc of Roxy Perfs, and the middle disc of the Wazoo box, we've already documented the making-of/altenates-from this particular album. Bear in mind that it's a compilation of sorts (half 1973, half "1972 with additions"). What they should have done, if they wanted to document this era some more, was issue a reduced-retail-price live box, its material 40%-"from the vaults"-60%-"beat the boots", covering everything from the Aussie shows in '73 to the Birdlegs shows in '74
The two shows and the quad mix are interesting. Much of the rest I already have Crux of the Biscuit. I'm gonna buy this thing anyway.
Thanks for reviewing this in a positive way! It really is a great LP from a band that was almost broken. It has so much passion and that shines throughout. Dutchess is a masterpiece. Its funny bc my friend who loves Peter Gabriels' solo stuff looks down on this! It's on the same level and in my opinion much better.
Nice set up! Had a dog that loved Pink Floyd and would howl along with "Dogs" and "Seamus"! One of my cats liked sleeping on the pillow inside of the bass drum in my kit. Great stuff man looking forward to more videos! Thanks!
Well done! Cheers from PA!
Thanks for the video but . . . <sigh> We just got Overnite Sensation. Now Apostrophe ('). Shouldn't they be spacing these things out? An alternate takes CD plus several bonus concerts. Wasn't that the Road Tapes series? The ZFT seems to be just blowing their wad. I know, I know, they're only responding to $ which is all fine and good but . . . Seems they're releasing more posthumously than stuff antemortem-ly.
@philcremer4709 This isn't greed on the part of Zappa Family Trust. They sold everything to do with Frank to UMG. It is UMG that is putting out these boxes in quick order. It wasn't disclosed what they paid for the Vault but you know they want big return on investment.
Ryko double Apos/Over was my first Zappa CD along with Jazz From Hell. 😁
I need more money. Those live shows. Jeff Simmons.
One of the greatest live albums ever

Hey Ian! I needed a little background on 7.1 ATMOS, as I will be making an upgrade when we move in about a year. Thanks for the tour
Duke will always be number 1 in my ranking which of course is an unpopular opinion. there's just something so cleverly unique about this album that makes it so easily recognizable. sort of like a end of an era type story. a concept album that definitely worked.
I'm right there with you on the full version of "Songs From The Wood" on this Anniversary Set. Bursting Out was in my car deck for months! In fact, Bursting Out is still considered by me to be one of the finest Prog Live Albums ever! The 1978 Show at MSG, I attended. I can remember feeling so let down that entire show to find John Glascock was ill and Tony Williams was filling in on bass. I remember also feeling that Barrie Barlow was a little less energetic than other times I saw Tull. Having seen Tull every tour that decade, the '78 show was not the best Tull concert for me.
Great review~
Sorry..this entire release is AMAZING! IT's historical FZ and the Mothers, and always an amazing experience! Just finished listening to this the first time, and can't wait for my next listen!! The fact that you are dissing some of this is unreal! Zappa and his musicians jamming! HOW MUCH BETTER CAN THIS GET!!! It's not an edited album, it's amazing musicians playing, and just creating! Mistakes will be made, weird things will happen, but this is how great albums are made! You just don't get it. Zappa even says that it's a recording session, if they mess it up, they'll do it again! Keep them coming Joe Travers!!!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, I liked it a lot too ! Will be looking forward to the next release.
I listened to this and exit stage left on repeat reading the Lord of the Rings series for the first time at 13 in '84. Good times Geat oldies...🎶💯✊🔥✌️
Not the best Stranglers ( would go for Rattus ) but very good weird pop and you're right, very unique.
Great analysis. I agree with almost all of your comments, though I may have a couple different favorites. One point you really opened my eyes on was when you said that, had they not split the intended epic suite up into 3, the flow of the album wouldn't be as successful as it is. Great point! I would personally like to point out the incredible drumming on Man Of Our Times. The overall hugeness of the sound on that track makes me enjoy the extra length, as in, I want to stay in that cavernous grandeur. Very great record, and a lot of fun to hear your thoughts on it.
I'm always suprised that in these box sets there are not more pictures of the band. All the ones I can see from you flipping through the set I've seen before. It seems like they did a lot more promotional photography before the 80's and then did a minimum of it afterwards. It's fun to see the band horsing around, or Ian in whatever get-up he is wearing at the time.
Ian's rejects are often better than other groups' best efforts! ;-) I would definitely love to see Under Wraps & Roots To Branches ... but anything else too.
All vinyl records are cut to fit the medium. So, the flat mix will always be cut accordingly as for a CD. It isn't an easy nor fast process as it is done in either real time or half speed. What mix did Bernie use? I suspect it is Wilson's stereo mix.
@@ignatzmuskrat3000 he used the original mix, Wilson’s mix is not on the vinyl.
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout cool. That mix is on the 2015 Blu-ray. I still have my original vinyl cut from that mix. I always wanted to hear it but sans the pops and clicks and they delivered. I don't know who cut my 1972 Atlantic records vinyl, though.
@@ignatzmuskrat3000 you get the flat transfer on that version which makes me jealous
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout yes, and all those 2015 editions were that way!
Whoa! That TFF box set! Nice score, man! I happen to have “Sea Song” on a two-7” set. But I imagine that box has all kinds of extra material, Ian! Still can’t wait for a vinyl/box re-release of the TFF album, “Everybody Loves A Happy Ending” … it’s a psychedelic masterpiece! Peace to you, Ian! And congratulations on 500+ subs! More exciting future projects for you! 🙂
I hate the generic Rhino label on the discs. A custom label with artwork would have been nice.
One of my favorite live albums. No band was better live that Jethro Tull. Some of the best musicianship along with Ian Anderson one if Rock music's best shoenan
There were many groups that were as great as TULL live. No one is better, they're all great..
