"In 1980, Dave, Barney, and Bev dragged their gear into the basement studio at the Mars Everywhere house (Mars Everywhere was Barney’s band at the time) and recorded a series of tapes straight through without stopping. No overdubs. Barney christened the group The Hydrogen Band. This EP is the second in a series of three recordings that will be made available on Bandcamp as digital downloads. The recordings were all de-mixed and re-mastered by Ian Beabout at the Rec. Room. Barney and Bev have since passed on from this world, but I can’t help but think that they’d be glad these recordings finally came to light.
Note: There are two short sections (about a minute each) on "The House on the Hill" where I accidentally mixed in a whole other session overtop of the original session. I didn't mean to; when I looked up at the screen, I found these two unintended short sections sitting there in two different spots of the piece (lord, I hope this makes sense!), and I was going to mute them or delete them, but when I listened back to them, I liked the combination of added sounds. I know it sounds crazy, but I got a feeling that Barney and Bev had a hand in this happy accident. I know I originally said that these tapes are being presented live, as they were recorded and without overdubs. There's a part of me that feels bad about that, but another part of me likes the mistake. Hope I can be forgiven for the transgression. It's still the essence and the spirit of this unique band, and I think this EP really gets that spirit across.
