Always used, always will use optifine. I use it for 1.8 and for single player post 1.12.2

The main reason for me is that i used optifine as an mod engine but now that more and more mods are on fabric and not on forge its better to use sodium and install sodium indium etc. but of course i still use optifine for like server with my friends cause i dont want to fuck around with fabric

Mojang is indeed lazy, incompetent and greedy. Notch added as a april fools a shop as a critque of microtransaction. Clear greed. After 15 years you still need to install a mod to install so that the game runs smoothly. And because minecraft does not really utilize optimization often times the game runs terrible only uses 14 percent of it's power. Clear incompetency. Imagine Ea brought out a game that can not even run smoothly from the start. You are trying to excuse the lack of content with small micro points. It makes multiple hundred of millions and you make such a big deal out of things that should have been in the game from the start. Then you try to excuse the lack of content with not wanting to overwork there employees. Simply hire mor employees or focus on minecraft and not some random sequels.They have 400 million dollars of revenue a year and add 40 different blocks and one mob literally. They are so many mojang apologist like you that can not grow up and let someone critisize there favoured video game devoloper. Spreading positivity is not the same as excusing incompetency and ignoring criticism. Mojang does not care about their community, they pretend to listen to the community, but they do there own thing. I am actually more concerned about the quantity rather then the quality. The quality itself is terrible they add extremely unbalanced things with to many things that have no use or are extremely niche. Like the elytra or beds. There game design itself is terrible they are laying down on past sucess.

TL;DR: Optifine is great for older versions, 1.12.2 and below. Sodium and all the other performance mods are better in newer versions.

I came back to minecraft a month ago only to get told Optifine was bad. I didn't understand why it was so bad but then I got embeddium and I was like "Ok yea Optifine is no longer king for performance". I still use it for my texture packs tho. No I'm not using fabric I use forge

My issue with optifine was that it straight up stopped working for no reason, it seems to keep crashing when I try to use it on both technic and curse forged and for some reason doesn't work.

As a server owner and plugin developer, I really don't like all the fabric praise by some people- compared to paper, fabric's api just sucks to develop for, especially with how poorly documented it is, and it's also not as good for performance. It's definitely a lot better than forge, which is just straight-up horrible (and fabric has mixins, which are nice), but I really just prefer paper's api, since it's more geared towards servers, while fabric is meant for both the client and servers. I'm really not sure why a lot of less-informed people like to praise it so much for being a "better" or "more optimized" platform, when that's simply not true.

Minecraft modding is 1:1 level of bs that's happening with Linux. Instead of contributing to project A, let's make a project B and we'll do things OUR way. Oh no, someone said a word on project A, let's split off into project C. Hey, we're project D and we'll do things completely differently, don't forget about us! This applies both for modding and server software. Meanwhile developers have to choose between 4 different platforms to develop for, some brave souls choose top 2 and develop for both, most can't afford to do that. Players are then split even more, since some mods only work on Forge and some only on Fabric. It's a mess, you'd hope that by now Mojang would release a competent modding API and end this by setting a common standard (datapacks don't count, no decent coding capabilities), but unfortunately no. With how advanced the minecraft command are already, why not make it into an actually usable programming language? Lua and JS are both performant enough and easily embeddedable, with Microsofts help they could probably even integrate TypeScript instead, for strong typing. It would pretty much solve vast majority of issues, most simple mods that just add structures, mobs, or items could be fully implemented with datapacks AND be performant at the same time.

In short words: Optifine is bad because mod incompatibility. Meaning, it changes or remove important features that other mods require to function properly.

You forgot to mention that optifine also allows for custom 3D models and entities, so any texture pack that adds like animated models, or 3D models needs optifine OR if your not using optifine it needs CEM (Custom Entity Models) and EMF (Entity Model Features) to get the same effect Also Fabric is a more up to date, easier and modern modding API compared to Forge, and optifine not natively supporting fabric and requiring a mod (called OptiFabric) in order to run along with its worse performance just makes it a bad choice for anyone, along with everything else you said.
