The brilliant Brazilian percussionist, singer, composer, teacher, and cultural entrepreneur Claudio Iron teaches the pander to English percussion student Joe Richards and the amazing English pianist and composer Kit Downes. They were members of The Commonwealth Resounds cultural exchange music education project that was part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Trinidad & Tobago in 2009. I was the principal workshop leader on the project.

Udu is a traditionally a ancient hausa instrument, its funny to see how other tribes adapt other ethic instruments. Its not igbo. The word itself is Hausa as well.

Traditionally, pottery isn the domain of women in Nigeria and some other African countries. it is taboo for men to work with pottery. There were many girls present. It might just be because of the video edit. There is actually more than twenty hours of footage from filming. Thanks for your affirmation, my brother. Chester Summerton is on piano. He's the brilliant young guy I am mentoring. He is following in Bheki's footsteps. Last year I arranged for him to travel from Joburg to Durban to meet Bheki's older brother Langa Mseleku and visit the genius's grave. He's the pianist involved in the Johnny Dyani legacy project that my cousin Vusi Mchunu (remember him from Clermont during the NGOMA Project) is leading.
The reason I asked is because he sounds like he's been listening to Bheki...fantastic to hear of you mentoring him...

Thank you for this! The whole band are playing on another level here. I think Meditations might be my favourite Bheki Mseleku album (or favourite album - full stop), so it's fascinating to hear him revisit and rework some of those themes in the solo piano piece here, presumably just a month after that live recording in Bath.
