    nice work with the referb. I#vedone a few and know exactly the issues. I applaud the use of common materials readly available, as to ordering vendor equipment. The one thing I have personally changed is using IDC type panels (either 110 or LSA) Here in Germany everything is LSA. My perfered panel are Modular panels (Perferable Keystone). I like the ability to add ports if not all used relativly easy. But great video, gave me some ideas.

    So, for the cable holder part of the patch panel, should I just bend its ears in order for it to "click" on the panel itself? I just opened mine and got very confused to see 2 pieces that don't really fit; bending the tray myself seems like brute forcing it to fit and I wouldn't want to end up damaging this. How should I unite the cable strain tray to the front of the patch panel?

    Make sure you don't pull those strain relief ties too tight, as you'll cause problems. Even if you don't damage the cable, you may cause an impedance bump. Those yellow cables seem to be tied down too tight.

      Yep. Part of is lack of time/patience/knowledge/foresight/and/or laziness. I work in K-12 IT and a lot of our data cabinets are terrible. We've had many techs over the past nearly 20 years come and go and no one seems to take the time or have the time to clean out the cabinets and use the shortest length patch cable as possible. We're slowly working on it but it is incredibly tedious process especially since we have over 60 data cabinets district wide. Its a lot of work and we don't always have enough time to do it as we get random last-minute projects thrown at us regularly.

    I have to understand which cable is which in a derivative box inside a wall. I can easily unplug cables at the switch side and plug that end in the toner, but at the other end of the cable it might be plugged to a access point that I can't easily reach. Is it safe to use a digital tone and probe when one end of a cable is connected to the tone and the other end of the cable is connected to any possible device, say an access point or a smart tv etc?

  • @midnight51
    @midnight51 Před 8 měsíci

    Well done. I'm wiring my mom's house soon and I opted to also use the newer keystone patch panels. I didn't even know they existed - I was there at Microcenter looking at this tech trying to understand what it was. Needless to say, after I got home I set the monolithic patch panel aside to return and ordered an everest media solution kit which includes the crimp tool, a bunch of keystones, and a 24 port patch panel. Really excited about trying out these keystone jacks - it seems like it's going to simplify everything and create a lot of modularity.

  • @drewlarson65

    These situations are when you turn to the client and say 'look, were gonna have some rolling outages saturday evening' then start untangling and replugging shit. Can clean up most things enough to see what's exactly going on in 30 minutes. Takes some experience and testicles but saves days of reverse engineering. If downtime is critical, migrate to other equipment. Sidenote: the 120v stepdown is probably pointless. Almost all of the equipment will run on 120/240v @ 50/60 hz. DC will work usually too even if the manufacturer doesn't list it in the datasheet.
