    .A few tips before you start this type job. Take a photo of all cables and switches and routers and patch cable locations.Use a label maker to mark all cables or a electricians number book. Don't look at the big picture. Go cable by cable ,switch by switch. Go out to the field and check for any labeling.

      I can as well!! It's interesting to observe what my own thinking would be when I'd enter a network room that already had trash on the floor. I would think to myself, "Well, there's already some trash here, I guess it's ok if I just add to it with the work I'm doing. It must just be accepted here!" It's an easy place to go to mentally. That's why I tell my clients just how important it is to have a very clean and tidy network room because it tells any visiting tech that this place values doing the job right and it will stand out like a sore thumb if you don't!

    This is a good example of the cumulative messy server room effect. When your server room is clean, any little imperfection sticks out like a sore thumb. However, when when enough technicians come through, eventually things are going to get messy if not maintained (and a closet like this is not normally seen). At some point it's going to get so bad that people just want to get in and out of there as quickly as possible and don't care what kind of work they do since it doesn't matter anyway. The same thing applies to software :(

  • @sergeantseven4240
    @sergeantseven4240 Před 6 lety +1

    I love the patch panel dressing. much more manageable than what we usually do. I think I'm going to adopt that. Although I can't stand zip ties on cable bundles unless its absolutely necessary. I much prefer reusable straps or hook and loop. Otherwise you have to go through and cut them off when you need to replace a cable or add a new one to the bundle.

    • @curtisbme
      @curtisbme Před 5 lety

      But does it take any more time to cut the zips vs unwrapping the velcro and put new zips on vs wrapping the velcro around? While I like velcro for my personal, small-time cable management, I would think zip ties would be quicker and in some cases easier to deal with though you have to be mindful not to make them overly tight. (I understand this is regular data center debate)

    • @sinistergroupon
      @sinistergroupon Před 5 lety

      zip ties can also be over tightened pinching the cable. I thought zip ties were discouraged for network cable.

They're very inspiring as someone else in the field who finds himself doing cable-management rehab for CCTV systems like fairly shoddy installation you've shown here. I'd love to see some of the process you go through if at all possible, like laying out the cabling on the shelf you installed, and your method of dressing back cabling. I know it may seem a boring piece to film, but seeing someone with as much experience and knowledge as you obviously have would be a valuable learning experience in my opinion. Maybe even some full-length, less-edited footage for patreons or donators, who knows.

    As a software engineer, I really enjoy these types of videos. It’s very easy to relate network components and cables to software components and the code that connects them. Though there are some unrelated concepts, a lot have analogous things in software.
    Being able to swap out a component of it fails or needs to be upgraded is much easier if the code around it is minimal and clear, same as the camera system here.
    If you need to remove a network component between a patch and a switch, that is unrelated to those items, you shouldn’t have to touch the patch or switch, which is basically one of the core tenants of good software architecture.

    48:26 Great use of those J hooks. I use them for hanging saw horses. You're right, closed D hooks are horrible since you either have to pull the wire or unscrew the hook.

    I'm just a small timer, and I always felt ashamed having to hack with what you have to handle odd spaces and low budgets. You take it to a zen level I never have dreamed of. I won't be afraid to take it overhead when it comes to messy runs. Thank you for sharing the technique FiberNinja!

    I found your channel through the suggested videos from another tech video, and I have watched everything you have posted on CZcams over the past 2 days. Suffice to say, I'm hooked, and subscribed, I'm looking forward to future videos, thanks for the uber geeky videos.
