NRL is actually key to saving Union in Victoria. Face it, the path to a profession in Rugby union is easier from Vic Rugby league than it is from Vic Rugby Union. The competition is stronger, more participants and coached to a higher level. And the skills are totally transferrable. The Rebels shouldn't have wasted money trying to develop grass roots union in Victoria, they should have just made some high profile signings from Vic NRL.

As an Irish fan it’s lovely reading all these comments from NZ and SA fans, I know a lot of Irish fans may have become unbearably arrogant prior to the World Cup but most of us couldn’t really believe that we had gotten to the point where we were actually favourites to win the tournament at one point - winning a World Cup in any major sport would stop the country for weeks and to get the respect from rugby nations like NZ and SA is an honour

If you could erase history and present people with rugby as it was long ago, point out some problems (as a knowledgeable advisor from the future) and let them start over, I think they could develop a game that'd be about as safe and more fun to play and watch, and with much simpler rules. Don't go back before 1877 though, because I think the RFU had the right idea in requiring immediate release after a tackle; we already have the versions that developed in the absence of that provision in Canadian and American football. Also, just a little better administration of that provision with the benefit of hindsight would probably take away the incentive of RL's evolution of the play-the-ball, since, after all, Union went on with rucking. The tunnel and put-in requirements of the set scrum opened a can of worms that it seems can never be closed now, introducing dangers and increasing difficulty of fair administration. Similarly the development of the maul didn't have to go on the way it did historically. And there were simpler ways things could've gone regarding play from touch without leading to the aerial circus we see now.

You make a valid point by asking the question… I mean I’m a true bok supporter, but look at PSTD performance in the final… that guy was on fire or was it a stimulant… if you also look at South Africa vs Ireland in the group stages you’ll see Jonny sexton take something during a water break…. A free kick for a scrum infringment is for the first offence, the referee must give a penulty for other infringments in the scrum afterwards. When have you seen multiple free kicks for scrum offenses in a game? Never. The referee has to penalise the team offending after the first offence, this is in the rugby rule book, he cannot keep on giving free kicks. I see multiple resets though especially if the referee is not willing to referee the situation properly. Springboks are safe.

I didn't become disinterested in super rugby because we were doing sh17 or not winning, I'm a Stormers guy, we got to the finals and pretty close in superrugby a LOT usually we'd lose against the team that won; uh uhm Crusaders aka the All Blacks; but that doesn't matter, If Stormers weren't doing good I'd follow the Bulls.. the Sharks in the 1 or two seasons that they were killing or I'd just follow whichever NZ team was murdering that year. I loved superrugby, I don't think the level of competition at the URC is as good as what it was in the unified superrugby tournament honestly...

With tackling Id say my tip is try different styles. I was a really good attacking fullback. Id score multiple tries a game. But I couldnt tackle for crap so I was always in lower levels. Everyone would try to teach me. Theyd teach the hit in the lower chest lift leg and drive backwards. That does not work fo a fullback. Once I learnt to tackle by wrapping up the legs I was significantly better but by the I was mid 20s and just playing for fun.

What is it about rugby Union is why it’s not a very popular sport. Here in America, it’s a pretty unknown sport. American football is very popular and more people watch American football here than any other sport

Rugby is just moving into new markets and i do see rugby's future moving more and more towards Africa and south america. NewZealand and Australia is being left behind because they relied on cheap players from pacific nations.

Serrevi managed to play Union very well a few years back. I’m sorry, but League is just shallow and tedious. In the U.K., the continuous barking instructions of the referee throughout the match is awful. Change seems to be a necessity in all things nowadays. Not always for the best, it would appear.

Great video and I agree with everything you say. I was at England v Samoa in the semi final in 2022 and it was one of the greatest games I've ever seen in either code. Samoa literally have some of the best players in the world in League who have been dominating the NRL with Penrith. When they reached the final the police force in Apia did a Siva Tau in tribute. Even the Rock sent a message. That just wasn't thinkable 20 years ago. This was after Tonga ended up beating all the traditional Rugby League giants of Australia, England and New Zealand in the space of a few years. Fiji also managed to beat New Zealand. This like you say just encourages interest as they realise they have a chance of winning the top prize. I do see similarities with the what happened with the great West Indies Test cricket team. If you'd said 30 years ago that the West Indies would be 10th in the world ranked behind Bangladesh and Afghanistan, I'm not sure anyone would have thought it possible. The reasons are similar though: England, India and Australia basically have the money and the other nations struggle to pay their players as they can't get the big Test teams to visit them. This causes the players to go to T20 where they can make millions and Test cricket slowly gets smaller and smaller. The paying the players the same money was such a smart move by Rugby League and I feel it has to happen in Union. But as you say my worry is will the financial interests want that?

All the dooms day comments from fans to administration hasn't helped. The players and the game do the best talking for the attraction to the game. Totally agree with cheaper tickets at the gate/online to get healthier crowds, which attracts more advertising and sponsorships. Rugby in Australia just needs a solid comp with more teams (about 16), build from the ground up or take and expand the Shute Shield a little nationally. A couple more freeview games needed (currently only 1 game) on free to air, Nine has 3 NRL games free to air per week.
