Outdoor Press Stoving method of tobacco plug making

I have shared before my method of pressing whole leaf into plugs. There’s plenty of information about that on my CZcams channel. But I wanted to share something that I have tried more recently. I got the idea from someone else, though sadly, I cannot remember who. Basically, I left the tobacco in its press outdoors for two weeks when the weather was constantly between 95 and 105°F. visually, th...

DIY Pipe Tobacco Plug Press for Flake (Part 1)

Here is how I made my first Pipe Tobacco Plug Press for making flakes in the style of Samuel Gawith. The design is my own but you are free to use it. I call it a Trigger Press. The wood cost $15 for red Oak. The trigger clamp is a Dewalt extra large trigger clamp that advertises 600 pounds of force. These are available for around $25, but I already had one. This makes for a very in expensive ...

    Dear Sir, I am pleased to have made the acquaintance of your tobacco products. I will be dealing with these things in the coming summer weeks. Tobacco has been in stock for months. - With positive thoughts of you and accompanied by Albrecht Dürer's "Praying Hands" I will try my hand at this project. I will listen to organ music, because I play this instrument. What a beautiful task. Thank you for your experiences with aromas and alcohol - I know what a problem mold formation is. I often discussed this problem with my wife, who is a pharmacist. Have a good time, my best wishes for mental and physical health, Helmut from Vienna

    That looks awesome! Where in SW are ya? I'm in So. Colorado, and grew my first crop last year 4 varieties, around 120 plants total, the weather last year was rough early spring, 5 hail storms all 2 weeks apart from may 1st when I planted. I still ultimately ended up with around twelve 5 gallon buckets of whole leaf after loosing a lot in learning when to harvest and best ways to cure without drying green (which was a rather laborious and expensive process in a climate with 20-40% humidity and because of hail setback pushing harvest basically all the way to first frost which meant lots of electricity on supplemental heat)

    I would LOVE the chance to try some of your VA PER blends or VA BUR blends and do a VR review of them on my channel sometime 😊 lemme know what ya think! Also would you ever be willing to make one of the wood presses for me and then i buy my own dewalt clamp? Wondering if youd be willing to sell me one and ship it to me here in SD sometime. I dont hahe the tools to make my own atm and i LOVE flake tobacco. Would be cool to make my own. Where do you get the tobacco you use to make the flakes, and also what type of tobacco do you use to make them, how long to press them and such? Would be interested in learning. Ive tried compressing some pre-cut blends i have on hand but because they are chopped up already, they turn into a crumble cake and not nice flake that holds together like yours. I dont even know where to start. But it looks so fun and they look very professional 😊cheers! ✌️🔥💨

    I’ve even cut the tin with high quality scissors label and tin all as one. I then place it on top of sealing lid and screw down the sealer ring. This method does not appear to interfere with the jar seal. ( I did this on tin where aging made the label near impossible to peel off without damage )

    What about infusing your alcohol with the spices individually for a month or two then using the tincture to saturate a portable hemidor?

    • @PartikleVT
      @PartikleVT Před měsícem

      infusing the alcohol separately for a longer time definitely works better in transfering the flavours (infusing too long however will extract unwanted flavors, needs testing). Then its only a matter of preference how you introduce it to the tobacco. Spray on top before pressing, use as humidifying agent in a humidor (in combination with water, but if using lower than 100 proof doesnt need extra steps). Soak the tobacco in the tincture too, although needs more processing to then adjust the moisture before being able to press, cut or roll the tobacco. I've had some experience making alcohol based tinctures and using them to transfer flavors into other stuff, but not with tobacco, but I do know that alcohol is a very good solvent so it will work on anything organic. (Also thats how hash is made from scrap weed, but dont tell anyone I know that)

    Here in Kentucky, you can find old plug cutters in just about every antique shop around. They're not going to offer the precision thickness adjustment of the meat cutter, but they make up for it in sheer coolness.

    I was hoping to find a method like this. I tried just spraying my shredded pipe tobacco with alcohol (limoncello). I barely noticed anything. It did help soften the tobacco for the press though. (I made your press btw works great). Waiting a whole month and just letting evaporation seems better to me and less product would have to be used. I’d like to try butter rum. I’m also interested in stoving using an oven. I’m also interested in buying a meat slicer to slice flake. I’m also interested in using Latakia. I really just want a sweet Virginia flake with some notes of grass and lemon citrus. I don’t want to pay $100+CAD for a 50g tin. It’s ridiculous. Making it yourself works out to be pennies! $5-$10 a tin. If I can figure this out and make a tasty sweet Virginia flake for cheap I’ll be a happy camper for the rest of my life. Appreciate your videos thanks 🙏:)

      I have your solution. Candy making flavor oils. LorAnn makes the best concentrated high temp oils and you can find them all over the internet including their own website. I use their natural peppermint oil. You can get natural lemon as well. I prefer to put a pin drop on the filter because that is the best way to get most concentrated flavor while using the least product. I also keep a travel size spray bottle with several drops of oil filled up with water that I shake and spray on my tobacco when it dries out. They carry every flavor imaginable including butter rum but those aren't natural so I can't say whether smoking it is a smart idea. Placing it in the filter would be safest because the smoke is passing through it instead of burning it. These are intensely concentrated to withstand lava temps used in making hard candies because anything less literally cooks out and you can add a whole bottle of other types of flavorings and taste nothing. That said, one pin drop will absolutely give you all the flavor you need, but I've found out the hard way what adding more does. I've extensively researched the safety of inhaling peppermint essential oil and found it to be used medicinally for many ailments, so I know that it's safe. However I do not know what inhaling citrus oils will do so I'd research that before adding that to your smoking habits. Good luck! *www.lorannoils.com*

    I know you said you're not bothered about the rough edge at the bottom, but have you thought of using something like a sacrificial rolled up newspaper on the bottom when you slice the flakes? It may also help with stopping the delamination. Awesome video. I really appreciate you going through it like this.
